Dad beat autistic son Joe Clyde Daniels to death, hid his body in remote area: affidavit

Violent details have been released in the murder of 5-year-old Joe Clyde Daniels.

According to an affidavit, Joe's father, Joseph Ray Daniels, confessed to police that he beat his non-verbal, autistic son to death at their Dickson home on April 4.

Daniels told police that he "struck his son...repeatedly in the body, upper torso, head, and face with closed-fist until his son was deceased," the affidavit says.

Young Joe Clyde died at his residence along Garners Creek Road. Daniels told authorities he put the kindergartner's body in the truck of his car and "disposed" of his son's body in a remote, rural area. As of Monday morning, Joe Clyde's body still hasn't been found after authorities searched through the weekend.

Daniels called 911 to report his son missing.

Joseph Daniels pens letter claiming Joe Clyde was killed by his mother

The father of Joe Clyde Daniels, Joseph Daniels, confessed to killing the 5-year-old autistic boy, but he's now pointing the finger at someone else - his wife, Krystal Daniels.

It's one of a couple of new developments in the case. Joseph Daniels is currently charged with homicide in the death of his son -- mostly based on a confession that Joseph has since recanted.

Why does it take so long for sentencing? If he was instantly sentenced for the murder charges why not go ahead and take care of the rest of the charges at the same time and save everyone's time? As for Krystal's trial it's been a long time coming, Covid really put the brakes on the Criminal justice system. I'm glad things are finally getting moving again in this case now we just need for Joseph to tell the truth and let baby Joe be laid to rest in a proper burial.

It's delayed even crime victims burials. That makes it worse.

So who did these remains that were not Joe belong to found in 2018? Did they ever determine?

It is sad they have not found him so he can be laid to rest with a place and some dignity. I don't see that not finding him shows anything as far as what happened or who is responsible. I hope he is found one day.

This is the only thing I could find about the remains found in Pegram, it basically states that the remains are adult in size and only partial remains were found.

In this case they tried to do it in September but between the State, Defense and the Judge, they all had other trials coming up and they couldn't find a date until February.

Private investigator continues to search for Joe Clyde Daniels' body

Will Joe Clyde's body ever be found? His body still has not been found, but that doesn't mean the case is closed.

The little boy had a birthday this past weekend; he would have turned nine this past Saturday. And it's a reminder he's still missing and the search for remains continues.

"You're looking for remains of a smaller child. You don't come across those things every day," said Newschannel5 legal analyst Nick Leonardo.

It's believed, of course, that Joe Clyde is dead, but where is the body?

"We're here to find Joe Clyde Daniels," said David Marshburn - an investigator from North Carolina. Marshburn was in Dickson several times over the past few years along with many others searching for the little boy's remains. He even called sheriff deputies out to collect possible evidence during Joseph's trial.

He says he'll be back later this year with new theories on where to look -- though he suspects, as he did in 2019, there won't be much left to find.

"It will be there, but scattered. And if there are remains your dogs will hit on it? Yes sir. Guaranteed."

Of course, to date, searchers have found no trace of the child within a six-mile radius of the home.

Of course, there are cases where a victim's body is never found. But the hope is someday Joe Clyde can be given a proper burial.

He's found several people. One of the few "high-profile" PIs who have.

Interestingly, prior to the conviction, he did not believe the parents were guilty.

He's not the only one questioning the verdict.

Possible new lead in search for Joe Clyde Daniels' body

Five-year-old Joe Clyde disappeared from his Dickson County home in 2018. This summer his father was convicted of murder.

But the little boy's body has never been found. Now, there's a possible jump start to the search.

A letter from the boy's father may provide some new leads. Joseph Daniels sent the letter to private investigator David Marshburn — who's been involved in other high-profile missing persons cases.

Now Marshburn is returning to Tennessee.

He's coming with some new leads and his cadaver dog thanks in part to a letter Joseph Daniels sent him last month from prison.

"Letters back and forth... so I have had a conversation with Joseph," said Marshburn.

Daniels writes: "Dear David, as you know I am now convicted for a murder."

Daniels does not admit to killing or disposing of his son's body.

But he does go on to write: "Here are some roads I want searched. Mostly these are roads in the surrounding area."

"My plan for coming back is to expand the search out further," said Marshburn.

For now, he doesn't know if Daniels is leading him to his son's body, or if he's lying as he has so often in the past.

But Marshburn won't give up on the search.

"I'm always optimistic about people being found. I truly believe he'll be found," he said.

So, Marshburn has a list of roads and new places to search, hoping it leads to a body more than years after Joe Clyde disappeared.

Marshburn expects to return later this fall or winter — when the brush is down and the trees are bare.

Joseph Daniels seeks new trial for murder of Joe Clyde

If you thought it was all over for Joseph Daniels... think again.

The father convicted this past summer of murdering his son Joe Clyde now is serving life. But, now he's taking the first step toward seeking a new trial.

To be clear: It's standard for the defendant to seek a new trial after a murder conviction.

In Joseph Daniels' case, the key may be in seeking contradictions in testimony.

Why?

Because he was convicted with circumstantial evidence.

Remember, Joe Clyde Daniels' remains have never been found. The jury delivered a guilty verdict this summer with no physical evidence.

The conviction came on the strength of two things: A confession that Joseph Daniels later recanted and crucial testimony from Joe Clyde's 11-year-old brother Alex who said he witnessed Joseph beat his brother and then carry him away.

After the trial, Lockert said Joseph Daniels would be challenging the guilty verdict.

"We had a lot of reversible errors in the trial. So he's advised he wants to pursue an appeal," Lockert said.

Now, in the motion filed for a new trial, the defense is expected to subpoena several witnesses and it is expected that Alex will be on the list.

"Some of the witnesses may testify to something differently... and that's what the defense is hoping," said NewsChannel 5's legal analyst Nick Leonardo.

He said lawyers will be looking for inconsistencies.

"Absolutely there could be contradictions," Leonardo said.

Any contradictions in what Alex or any other witness testifies to could be grounds for a new trial.
