A Chaffee County woman is missing after a neighbor said she went out for a bike ride Sunday and never returned, sparking a search involving more than 100 emergency personnel.

The Chaffee County Communications Center received a report on Sunday at 5:46 p.m. regarding a missing woman in the area of County Road 225 and West Highway 50.

Posting a $3 million bond in a first-degree murder case is unusual, but not unheard of. Morphew is expected to be released once he is fitted with a GPS monitor and finds a place in Colorado to live.

Barry Morphew is expected to be released from the Alamosa County jail soon while he awaits trial for the murder of his wife, Suzanne, after raising enough money to hire a bondsman to post his $3 million bond.
His attorney, David Beller, said that supporters of Morphew pulled together the bond fee, about 10 percent of the $3 million bond set by the court. Beller declined to identify the supporters.
“They have asked to remain anonymous,” said Beller. “And that frankly is for their own safety, with all the vitriol that the case has brought and all the doxing.”
Beller said there have been threats and bullying of Morphew’s family, including his two daughters, who have steadfastly stood by his side since Suzanne first went missing on Mother’s Day 2020.
The case, involving a well-to-do family living in a beautiful Colorado mountain town, has garnered intense national media interest from traditional news outlets and podcasters.
Earlier this month, Morphew’s attorneys asked the court to modify his $3 million cash-only bond to a $500,000 cash-only bond. That request was denied, but Judge Amanda Hopkins changed the bond to allow Morphew to use a surety, a bail bonds company, that can post the bond for a fee. That fee is not refundable at the end of the trial.
The court said it was moved to modify the bond in part because of the support of his daughters.
Posting a $3 million bond in a first-degree murder case is unusual, but not unheard of. The Alamosa Citizen was first to report that Morphew had secured a bond.
Morphew is expected to be released on Friday or Saturday, once he is fitted with a GPS monitor and finds a place in Colorado to live. He’ll be confined to his home, but can attend legal and medical appointments. And, if he can find employment, Morphew would be allowed to leave the home for work, after getting permission from the court.
Beller said that Morphew “remains hopeful, very hopeful. He is discouraged by his inability to be able to publicly address the allegation against him. He’s concerned about the welfare of his family, specifically his girls.”
Once Morphew is released from jail, will begin paying for his own defense, said Beller. To this point, Morphew’s attorneys have been paid by the state, because a defendant is deemed indigent if they are in custody, Beller said.
“In Mr. Morphew’s case, between what little bit of assets he has as well as some supporters, he is going to be paying for his defense moving forward for as long as he and they are able to do so,” said Beller.
Morphew was originally arrested for the murder of Suzanne in 2021, but her body had not yet been found and the prosecution struggled to meet deadlines for producing evidence to his defense attorneys. The charges were eventually dropped before trial began, allowing for them to be refiled if new evidence emerged.
Suzanne’s body was then found in 2023 in Alamosa County, about an hour south of the Morphews’ home. An autopsy in 2024 found the presence of a unique mixture of animal tranquilizer chemicals that Barry Morphew was known to possess, according to the new charges filed in the case. A grand jury indicted Morphew on murder charges this year, and he was arrested in Arizona, living under the alias Lee Moore.

The threats were the other way around, towards Lauren Scharf, for one. If he and his daughters received threats, I doubt it was anything like those and probably just some online b.s. Regardless, it irks when the threats were coming the OTHER way.

Interesting that a prisoner has to be considered indigent and gets an atty pd by the state. So someone with tons of money is indigent? I don't mean Barry, I mean anyone. That doesn't seem right at all.

Even his gf turned on him last I knew, the one he had since Suzanne (and I believe before). But prior she supported him so yeah, it took her awhile to learn.

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Barry Morphew, accused of killing his wife, Suzanne Morphew, in 2020, was released from the Alamosa County Jail on Friday after supporters helped him post $300,000 of his $3 million bond.

According to the Alamosa County Jail, one of his daughters was present on Thursday with the bondsman to meet the bail.

Barry Morphew will be under strict house arrest and wear an ankle monitor. He will also be required to abstain from drugs and alcohol, and surrender his passport.

On June 20, 2025, Barry Morphew was rearrested in Arizona on first-degree murder charges and subsequently extradited to Colorado after murder charges stemming from his 2021 arrest were dismissed in 2022.

Suzanne Morphew disappeared from the Maysville area of Chaffee County on May 10, 2020. Three years later, investigators discovered her body in an area of Moffat, in the San Luis Valley.

A 2024 autopsy report said Suzanne Morphew died of “unspecified means” but ruled it a homicide. While there was no indication of trauma in her remains, a drug cocktail used to tranquilize wildlife was found in one of her bones, the report said.

Prosecutors and law enforcement say they remain committed to seeking justice for Suzanne Morphew.

I agree. I think it should have been more than enough for this judge that he was living under an assume name in another state! He probably thinks taking his passport and putting on an ankle bracelet confining him to home is enough but I wouldn't count on it. He is probably liquidating assets to flee, not to pay his lawyer! I can't get over he did not use his former atty who atlhough unethically did well for him, my guess is they didn't get paid. She probably counted on pay from that lawsuit they filed that ended up dismissed, not sure I believe he ever paid her.

It's just maddening they keep letting him out or making it so he can get out without much trouble.

No surprise a daughter picked him up and arranged bond. I wonder when, if ever, these girls will get sick of taking care of daddy. I lost any sympathy for them a long time ago.

Watch too, he will come back asking for more. He did last time. That judge had less rules, I believe he could go out as he wished if in his own county. He came back and asked that could be expanded using where his daughter lived as an excuse. That judge was way easy and granted it.

I think he will come back here too and ask that conditions be eased.

I'm sure he has a plan to take off, at the very least. That bondsman better have somebody reliable lined up to monitor the gps and make sure it is not deactivated or out of it's territory. We've seen too many cases where It wasn't being properly monitored.

Definitely. We rarely see accused murderers out on bail and there must be a reason for that imo. Flight risks due to serious charges, dangerous to have out on the streets, etc.

You don't need a passport to get INTO Mexico. You only need one to get back to US. You do if you are flying, but we know he wouldn't do it that way. You can simply walk across at some of the border crossings.

I forgot that and should have known it as 12 years of going to Mexico, I heard that more than once.. Well they love Mexico so that would be his destination. His problem is I think he'd stay to a resort area and creature comforts and someone would be bound to recognize him. I can't quite see him going into inner Mexico, etc. All their pics are from some resort area, probably Cancun, with no locats in them.

We can also get him back from Mexico (once found) but it would take some time most likely.

The remains of a woman who went missing over two years ago in Colorado have been found.
Edna Quintana initially went missing around May 3, 2023, while rock hunting, the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said in a statement on Friday, June 27. She was 55 years old at the time.
On June 17, a hiker discovered her remains in a remote area of the county and “immediately contacted” police, per the SCSO. Deputies promptly secured the scene and returned the following day with agents and analysts from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as well as two cadaver dog teams from Colorado Forensic Canines, authorities added.
The remains were then “carefully recovered” and transported to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office for examination. There, they were positively identified as Quintana on June 25, police said.
Authorities eventually reached out to Quintana’s family “to inform them of the identification and to offer their support.”

The SCSO said it is currently “working closely with CBI to determine the circumstances surrounding Ms. Quintana’s death." Her cause of death, authorities added, is still under investigation.
PEOPLE reached out to the SCSO for comment on Saturday, June 28, but did not receive an immediate response.

In an email to PEOPLE, the CBI confirmed that an investigation into Quintana’s death is ongoing. The organization said that when the search for Quintana began in 2023, it led to the discovery of the remains of two other people.

The remains of 26-year-old James Montoya were found in Saguache County that July, and authorities later learned that Montoya was murdered in the Denver area, per the CBI.

Then, in September 2023, CBI agents discovered the remains of 49-year-old Suzanne Morphew near the town of Moffat. Her husband, Barry Morphew, was indicted this year on June 18 on a first-degree murder charge, according to the organization.
Authorities are now urging anyone with information related to Quintana’s disappearance or death to contact them.

I recall almost all details of and surrounding her murder but other things discussed, not so much in detail so I may be wrong on this. Or was it said as well when or after she was found, I can't recall

Anyway, there was an area known to have bodies frequently dumped and it seems to me it was here. The place was real but I just am not sure if I assumed this was the place or I saw it said after she was found. I AM pretty certain it was this county and general area if memory serves.

Anyhow, it is my opinion/speculation Barry putting her in these dumping grounds (if they are that place) to again throw off LE as to who killed her. Also going out of county and opposite direction of his alibi, etc. is part of it most likely.

I lean towards she may have been moved though from her original "burial" location. If there's one thing I want to find out as things progress or trial commences is if LE thinks she was moved.

They were looking for two other missing people when they found her but I think i read they have now also found the original two separate people as well.
