ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WLUK) — Taylor Schabusiness attacked her attorney during a court hearing Tuesday, moments after the judge indicated he was going to delay her March 6 trial.

<snip>
Jolly then said he would file a motion to withdraw from the case, but the judge did not immediately rule on that.

An Atlanta-area police officer has been fired and arrested on suspicion of concealing the death of a 16-year-old girl whose remains were found last week, some six months after her family last saw her, authorities say.

Miles Bryant, a 22-year-old Doraville, Georgia, police officer, was arrested on preliminary charges of falsely reporting a crime and concealing the death of another in connection with the death of Susana Morales, the Gwinnett County Police Department said in a news release Monday.

Bryant was employed as a police officer in Doraville, an Atlanta suburb and DeKalb County city that neighbors Gwinnett County, police said.

Bryant was being held Monday in county jail without opportunity for bond, Gwinnett County police said. Details about what precisely he is accused of doing and what led investigators to him weren’t immediately available.

The remains of Morales, a resident of Norcross – a city some 20 miles northeast of Atlanta – were found February 6 near a highway in eastern Gwinnett County, after a passerby reported seeing what looked like human remains in the woods, police said.

Investigators still are trying to determine the teen’s manner and cause of death, the Gwinnett police release said.

Morales had been missing since the night of July 26, 2022, when she texted her mother that she was walking home from a nearby friend’s house. She never made it home, according to police.

The teen’s cell phone and video footage showed Morales walking toward her home that night, police said, citing, in part, a location application. Investigators believe she may have gotten into a vehicle, Gwinnett County police said in late January.

I'll never egg someone to commit suicide. That is a phenomenon that has evolved into a behind doors extreme sport for bullies. But people like this. Kill YOURSELF and don't take it out on others. Killing others that are complete strangers who did nothing wrong to you. You don't care how many people you killed and the families you devastated. Your motive is irrelevant. It is just an excuse whatever it is. Everyone could have an excuse. I had a hang nail and I got lemon juice in it. It hurt really bad. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY!

A Minnesota woman convicted of fatally shooting her 6-year-old son just days after regaining custody was sentenced Thursday to life in prison.

Julissa Thaler, 29, was convicted last week of first-degree murder in the October 2022 death of Eli Hart, who prosecutors said was shot nine times by his mother as he sat in his booster seat.

Parents of the year!

I hope the parents face major penalties for this :poop: . He's a corrections officer, he should know gun safety rules better than almost anyone. Dip :poop: s like this need to be punished harshly. What if he had taken the gun out and shot his sisters?

Hey, what's wrong with keeping a loaded gun, in an unlocked drawer that a 3 year old could reach?

Well, now you know

The Minnesota mother convicted of killing her 6-year-old son was sentenced to life in prison, but not before she shared her feelings with the court.

“I’m innocent. F—k you all. You’re garbage. That is all, your honor,” Julissa Thaler said during her sentencing hearing Thursday.

<snip>
“Ms. Thaler, I don’t know if that’s appropriate here,” Hennepin County District Judge Jay Quam said of the outburst.

“Sorry, I told you what somebody else can’t,” Thaler, 29, responded.
