More info as to why her mom has been charged.
STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) - Bond has been set at $10,000 for the mother facing charges in relation to an AMBER Alert in Portage County.
Portage County District Attorney Cass Cousins has also released new information about the investigation.
An AMBER Alert was issued Sept. 11 for Chelsie Lehmann’s 6-year-old daughter. The girl was found safely on Saturday.
Cousins issued a media release Tuesday morning stating
Chelsie Lehmann and her minor children recently began residing in a home in Almond owned and occupied by Jordan Coyle.
Coyle, after having been convicted of a felony child sex offense approximately 16 years ago, is a registered sex offender and has conditions not to reside with children.
When the Department of Corrections learned that children were living at the residence, they issued a warrant for Coyle’s arrest.
Coyle began actively avoiding arrest and hid from law enforcement. This included an instance when he fled on Sept. 9 after police arrived at his residence to execute the warrant.
Lehmann is alleged to have aided or harbored Coyle during this time.
She is also alleged to have permitted or encouraged him to violate the terms of his supervision by having ongoing contact with her 6-year-old daughter.
The charges are the result of law enforcement scrutiny of Lehmann after her six-year-old walked away from home on Sept. 11 and was missing for the next two days.
Police issued an AMBER Alert upon the belief that the child was potentially with Coyle in some unknown location.
Coyle and the child were ultimately located hiding in nearby woods in the late afternoon on Sept. 13.
Coyle was taken into custody without incident. The investigation indicates that the child had formed a close relationship with Coyle, calling him “Dad,” and
had left her home two days earlier likely looking for him.
There is no indication that the child was taken by Coyle from the residence by use of force or threats, but rather was seeking him out.
The child was recovered unhurt. The missing persons investigation revealed
evidence that Ms. Lehmann has previously assisted Coyle in avoiding arrest and allowed contact with her daughter, contrary to his supervision conditions.
Lehman is in custody pending her initial appearance on Sept. 26. Coyle is in custody on a DOC hold and pending the filing of criminal charges. A court date for Coyle will be set once the investigation is complete.
At this time, both are presumed innocent until evidence establishes their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Further investigation into this incident remains ongoing.
District Attorney Cass Cousins further states: “The missing persons complaint and AMBER Alert has caused tremendous fear and concern in the community. Lehman is alleged, through her actions, to have aided a felon avoid lawful arrest and thereby directly contributed to causing this alarming situation. Thankfully, through law enforcement’s tireless, around-the-clock efforts, the child was found safe in less than 48 hours. While current information indicates that the child was not physically abducted from the residence by threats or force, but rather left seeking to find Mr. Coyle as he hid in the woods and avoided arrest on his warrant, the State intends to prosecute all applicable criminal offenses from this incident. I would like to thank all of the law enforcement agencies and other county organizations involved thus far for their impressive efforts to locate the child safely.”
