Maui woman reported missing while traveling, family seeks help finding her

Loved ones of Ha'iku resident Hannah Kobayashi are trying tirelessly to find her after she reportedly disappeared while traveling to the mainland.

"We're just trying to not be paralyzed, in a way, not think of the worst," Kobayashi's aunt Larie Pidgeon said.

The 30-year-old was reportedly last seen at the Los Angeles International Airport nearly a week ago.

Pidgeon said Kobayashi had a layover in Los Angeles last Friday on her way to New York for a concert and a photography job, as well as to visit Pidgeon’s sister.

A friend of Kobayashi’s just so happened to be traveling on the same flights as her, Pidgeon added, and last saw her at LAX.

But then Kobayashi missed the flight to New York, which was one of the last of the night.

"That's when everything started getting fuzzy and we're starting to lose contact with her," Pidgeon explained.

A screenshot of messages Pidgeon said Kobayashi sent to the aunt in New York mentioned, "I just finished a very intense spiritual awakening."

Another text apologized for "craziness," adding afterward "was definitely intercepted."

According to Pidgeon, Kobayashi's last text was sent on the same day to her roommate, in which she mentions feeling scared, and that someone might be trying to steal her money and identity.

Since then, relatives have been having trouble getting in touch with her, and her phone appears to be unreachable.

"It (Kobayashi's phone) was pinging in the LAX airport and it no longer... it goes straight to voicemail," Pidgeon said.

"It didn't move from LAX airport so that is where we know that she last was."

Mexico is a HUGE country. There are TONS of good people there.

However, what she knows, where she went, and who she is maybe with, how her family is acting, yeah I can see that worry. But it's certainly not all one big bad place with all bad people. If she has a wit about her. Or has learned a single thing in her life.

Her family I am going to agree, WTF, I am adding the eff lately more than the H sometimes.

Hard as it could be, and it was, very, I'm so glad I was born and raised in the years I was. This world has gone nuts.

I'm sure not saying there hasn't always been problems, or no one ran away, left willingly, etc. because certainly it probably went on here and there. It just was not so prevalent, easy to plan I guess and find help to do so. Now there's the internet, etc.

GFM.

Etc.

I myself think there is a bit of a play on trying to easily give the LAPD a black eye, and they've had several through time right? OJ would be the best known.

Family playing the black man thing but that comes from some Twitter thing. I know the guy's name, know he has a YT channel or did, just can't recall all. Is he a PI I think? Was involved in aother case or two I followed. I can't always remember but I know I form my opinions based on real things and I don't trust it. However, I do not like or trust this family either. NOR her.

What a waste of resources. And the conspiracies that sprung up OMG. If she's in trouble, she is certainly old enough to have known better. Although with a family like that well...

People like this, PIZZ me off. Her and her family. Although I can almost sympathize with her and what she likely dealt with. ALMOST but not QUITE. SAme with them. And of course it's Cali. And yes, I do know she flew from Hawaii.

I hate our winters, but I tell ya, I am glad for many other reasons I'm learning to appreciate more and more each day that I in the midwest where things are still relatively normal. However, something like this and these types could happen here too or anywhere.

Up in the middle of the night. Trying hard to get Frank to behave. Can't pet him enough, overboard needy, needing constant attention, sore as sh*t, about on top of me,and worried about Mel too. And I am as sore as ****. He's in my ear right now,SERIOUSLY. This cat is as different as I've ever had and I've had many.

It's 4;15 a.m. now.

As of right now, this girl is a brat. But her family is also something else. That's where i stand at the moment.

I'd stay away since she got away, were I her and try to find another path BUT has she ever adulted. I somehow doubt it. Family probably helped stop that, and she's going to have to find someone, not the smartest route, to find her way rather than learning herself.

Not sure what to say but I'll end with she is THIRTY, not SIXTEEN. And can someone be played, led, get into a bad situation. Of course. Should one care and help be there. Certainly.

Not how I'm seeing it at the moment though. You also make your choices. And have to live, learn and realize you did.

She can face up, fess up or probably even stay where she is with no further problems other than all talking about it, but it will fade when the next case takes over. Right now her family needs to shut up, go away and refund.

Again, I hate the climate but I am appreciating where I live in other ways and that people are pretty fricking normal, and also glad I was not raised in these times.

yeah a long wandering middle of the night or later post. was probably overdue for one. oh well.

right now she is a brat to me, and her family is something else.

I do feel he was just doing his legal job of "not cooperating" with the mother. As he should. Not sure if this is just more family drama or something else though with this family.
So what was the "visa scam"? Get paid to marry someone so they can get a residency visa? Maybe she is doing it again by heading to Mexico. This whole thing is just suspect. She is no victim.

Yeah, it's marrying a U.S. citizen so you can become a citizen.

The Feds take a close look at these suspected cases.

They ask questions like:

How did you meet?
What are their parents names?
What city did they grow up in?
Do they have any siblings and what are their names?

A lot more than casual acquaintances would know about each other.

If they determine it's a sham marriage, they'll strip the American citizenship and deport the foreigner. The American faces penalties as well.

I personally know someone who married someone from India and it’s not that easy to just marry someone so they can become a citizen. I don’t know what this scam is about? But the people I know still have to spend half the year in their perspective countries. So they spend six months in the United States and they spend six months in India.

Not even sure she was scammed quite honestly. Nothing says she was, but probably an entirely willing partner. That I've seen anyhow.

I also don't know why anyone needs a green card these days, all just come in and nothing is done to them anyhow.

you know, I got so sick of the Carly Russell one and this is becoming no different. Meaning her family's denial and enabling and her bratty self as well.

so the aunt is an influencer and claims made she wants to further her influence/status/viewers I suppose. she separates self from the family now though and says has nothing to do with the gofundme. family has gofundme. on and on. she thinks money should go to a PI, not a lawyer.

My God. Nothing like showing your family's and individual's of its dysfunction to the entire world.

She claims no one's heard from her for something like 25 days. Well if that's the case, and true, then I don't see how they could retain a lawyer for "her".

Aunt wants to just be sure she is willing, not held against will, find her, etc. Well to a point that's understandable I guess but she is an adult and doesn't appear to want to come home or be found. Now she certainly could have done something willingly but now found herself in a worse boat but who knows. Or been played. Doubtful but I guess then too a lesson is needed.

I seriously doubt she's being trafficked or all that speculation. I WOULD want to know a loved one was safe but still she's an adult.

I don't think she's any victim either. MOre than likely not.

Aunt's an influencer apparently, She wanted to be a famous photographer and artist. Instead she does a green card marriage and walks across the US/Mexican border.

I keep saying she's THIRTY and she is. She's not some child or young teen or even young 20 year old.

Hey I love Mexico and I don't mean areas like Tijuana, it is full of very good people, hard working people, etc. but I doubt she's equipped to live here, much less anywhere else or has many life skills.

IF LE has ascertained she is there of her free will, then resources need to stop and efforts stop being wasted. And the family needs to understand that as well.

Next we will have Dog or some such involved.

Give me a break. SMDH. Seriously, who ARE these people.

Man who spent day with Hannah Kobayashi opens up to police: Report

Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department told People.com Kobayashi met an unidentified man at Los Angeles International Airport on Nov. 11. The pair spent approximately nine hours together, walking through downtown Los Angeles and ultimately falling asleep at Union Station.

According to Lt. Doug Oldfield and Detective Omar Franco, the man said Kobayashi appeared coherent and engaged during their encounter. He also told police she discussed her life in Maui, personal matters and travel plans, including intentions to visit the Redwoods and New York, People.com reported.

Mystery man who spent 9 hours with photographer Hannah Kobayashi before she vanished recalls encounter: ‘An ear to listen’

The mystery man who spent nine hours with photographer Hannah Kobayashi before she vanished told investigators that she was a “free spirit” — but otherwise seemed completely normal, according to a report.

The day before she walked into Mexico, Kobayashi and the man bumped into each other outside of LAX and walked through downtown LA together, talking and smiling until they made their way to Union Station where they fell asleep together.

When he woke up in the morning, the 30-year-old photographer was gone.

The man was one of the first people who authorities tracked down after she was reported missing after police saw the pair on security cameras.

“For a while, he was the last person to have seen her when we didn’t know where she was,” Lt. Doug Oldfield, of the Los Angeles Police Department’s missing persons unit, told People magazine.

“So we did have to spend a few days on this to ensure that nothing bad happened,” he says.

After analyzing hours of footage, police determined that he was not a threat. He was often smiling, and Kobayashi had an opportunity to cry out for help as they walked past LAPD officers.

Investigators have spoken twice with the man, who said they first met around 9 p.m. local time on Nov. 11 as she was leaving the airport. She was looking for directions to get to the train station, he told police.

The two decided to walk together and formed an instant bond as they talked.

“For the amount of time they spent together, he pretty much was an ear to listen,” said Detective Omar Franco, who heads the missing persons unit.

“She just spoke and talked about her life in Maui, her personal life, her love life and so forth. And he just listened to her.”

The man described Kobayashi as a “free spirit” but told police she seemed perfectly normal and not scared.

She didn’t seem scared, and had even mentioned her plans to be in New York — where she was supposed to fly three days earlier to visit her boyfriend but never boarded her flight.

When they got to the station they ate dinner together and passed out in a waiting area.

Kobayashi then got up by herself in the early morning, gathered her luggage and “walk[ed] off on her own,” Franco told the magazine.

“These things, we were able to corroborate,” Oldfield said.

She purchased a bus ticket around 6:10 a.m. on Nov. 12. Four hours later she was at the border and walked into Tijuana around noon, police said.

Her phone was left at LAX for reasons still unknown.

Police have cleared the “gentleman” of any wrongdoing and do not suspect Kobayashi was a victim of any crime.

So her family didn't like and were scared of somebody being nice to her?

:thud:Free spirit, "passed out together" going to meet her bf 3 days eairlier but didn't board the flight. Etc. Etc.

Unless they can charge her for someting I freaking would quit wasting resources on the brat.

Very unamused.

Passed out together. Not dozed off, fell asleep, that could be news, who knows.

When she need a ride home, hopeffully she has kept track of her passport, last I knew (maybe it's changed) you need it to get back into your own country (here) and not to enter Mexico. Maybe she will luck and be hitchiking on the very road her aunt happens to be driving down and can grab a ride.

This is getting ridiculous.

Or her family can wire her some GFM money.

Absolutely they need to quit wasting resources on her. I'm fairly sure LA has enough real crime than wasting time dealing with BRATS.

Of course I hope she is alive and safe but have no reason to think she's not.

I wonder how many "strangers" she has passed out with in Mexico. Loving that free spirit...

Law-enforcement appears to be correct. Sounds like she’s willingly missing.

The only thing that is making me curious at this point is what she’s going to think when she finds out what happened to her dad.

Are you thinking she doesn't know? For some reason I can't picture that. I mean I guess she could have ran off and totally did mean living off grid and having no way of communication, but I mean I can't picture someone who well could be in trouble, doesn't want to be found, is scared of being found, and so on not checking on it and keeping up with the news on it etc. She might not be a "criminal" but checking for the same reasons criminals do, keeping up with "their" case to see if they might be in danger of being found or found out.

I'm curious I guess on if she DID find out and does know if she felt any guilt or remorse over it (her dad).

I'm also curious about what she has for money and what she is going to do about money in the long run.

I guess the theme that keeps running through my head is that you can't run away from your problems but have to face them. Of course we all need an escape here and there and a way to deal or distract. If on the other hand, it's some fantasy thing or dream of romance, well that's very immature and all things have consequences, and she is 30.

If she has controlling family well break from them, but face them. They can't make you stay, Unless of course you need their money or some such.

Right now, to me, she seems like a spoiled brat. Right or wrong, don't know. May change my mind.

She's got great attn and now her dad is dead. Probably scared to surface. Does she think it was worth it I wonder... Maybe doesn't care. Hard to say.

Hope she's safe. I do always with all. And jmo.

I think she knows someone in Mexico, whether it be a Mexican national or an American living there. I know more and more people living there these days, along with a lot of nomads that I've seen on YouTube who spend their winters in Mexico.

I would not disagree with that. It was I hoped not too many years ago to be doing, at least part of the year. Then sh*t happened as it does.

There are many down there, not hard to find Americans, even years ago.

What does throw me is her thing with this guy though. Maybe just met someone and she's friendly so they spent the day together or whatever. I mean when she was still in LA. Talk of a bf and going to see him. Wasn't he in NY though and she bailed on the flight... Not SURE on that one.

The account from the guy in LA says she was relaxed, not seemingly worried about anything, stressed, etc...

I think it very likely she knows someone or is with someone in MX. Very much agree.

I to this day have not had a chance to read every link but has it ever been said she's went any further into Mexico than like across the CA border? Meaning deeper into the country? I always like to point out and i'm sure most know it but some think otherwise I have run into in life, it is a BIG country. All we ever hear about it is the crime, the drugs and generalized sh*t by news. They hear the same about us. I've had many a talk about it when I've been there correcting their misconceptions and they correcting mine, etc.

And more there speak our language than people here speak theirs. Not all of course.

But again, I am sure you know that. I am just saying it for anyone one day reading.

I suspect LE knows exactly where she is and who she is with. And have for awhile. Have determined she is willing and doesn't want contact or to come back. Made sure who she is with is not controlling her, etc.

There really isn't much they can do is there in these cases... She hasn't committed a crime.

It is hard for me to fathom though not just facing things, saying you are leaving and breaking loose. But who knows, maybe if you had a very controlling family, I just don't get such but I guess depending, way raised, age... Yet she sounded pretty carefree.

However, all we know is news bytes, etc. And it is never knowing the person or the life. I speculate on such, I think most of us do, but we can only do it with what we have or know.

Right now though, I am still thinking she's a spoiled brat.

Maybe unfair but when you bring national attn on yourself you are going to get that.

Some get it when they did nothing. Your kid truly was kidnapped and parent is looked at. Most understand that unless guilty. Imo.

Anyhow before I sidetrack, I will stop.

She seems to know what she's doing and had a plan. Not sure she is any "adult" but that's what it is and I sure don't know. My suspicion is she traded one thing for another and someone else is still paying the bills. Meaning if it is not the aunt or the parents, it is a friend or bf. I've seen nothing that makes me think she's capable, but again I haven't seen it all.

Think of like runaway brides. I mean TELL the person. I am not talking the movie, there was an actual case like that that I mentioned on here when that girl ran away.

Okay. I'm due for something lighter or some sleep.

Anyhow I agree. She is with someone I am guessing most definitely. For now anyhow. Hope it works out for her.

Still not sure either that this wasn't an intentional stunt with others involved either.
