FBI now involved in ongoing search for missing 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

You know more than me, I gave up pretty early, I couldn't take it anymore! But yes, it could be over next week. I have no doubt about the verdict. She knew all the time what she was doing😐
Justice for Gannon 💙💙💙
It was actually pretty dull, I kind of made myself listen. I mean it was a pros psych expert I believe but not overly interesting especially at the point it was at. The good stuff like her faking probably came earlier although she did allude to the fact that she could have been a couple of times but she didn't outright say it in those words.

I am with you, I have little doubt she will be found guilty and I predict the jury won't be out long. It wouldn't surprise me if we see one stunt from her yet as it all closes in. Has she, does anyone know, quit giving the finger and pulling the loon act on occasion?

I suppose their expert could make a difference but nah I don't believe so.

There was some testimony that was kind of interesting in that she pretty much named her other personalities and said she could I think summon them and control them somewhat, etc. and I guess this is NOT how it works so T failed in that act. There was also some testimony saying things she "could" have she probably didn't as such would have been seen by someone etc. at points in her life and things would have presented before Gannon, etc., etc.

I had just come home from work and really wasn't in the mood to listen to it and didn't listen fully, had the sound on but was looking at other things, getting my shoes off, etc. lol. I have hated that I had to miss much of both of these trials but with hers when I have listened, it is about all I can take. There is NO reason she should be putting all through a trial imo, her guilt is so clear. It is also beyond crystal clear that she was fully in control of what she was doing and executing plans right under the noses of LE. Over an e-x-t-e-n-d-e-d period of time no less.

Let's get this woman put away and off to the big house already. It has been a l-o-n-g time coming. At least hopefully it will only be once in this case. The poor witnesses and families in Daybell will probably all be back for the trial of Chad, or most of them anyhow and go through every bit of it again. He'd be wise to cut a deal with death removed once Lori is convicted but I don't see him doing so... There is MUCH implicating him imo, more so than her.

I do have to say from what I've seen both of these trials have been run very well with the prosecutions well prepared and doing a pretty dam*ed good job. The defense in this one here doesn't really have a prayer imo and in Daybell I don't think they do either but I expect more of an effort in that one. In Stauch here I think all they have is one doctor they somehow finally found that will try to say she is insane and I doubt it will be anything overly impressive imo, it is too clear it isn't the case. They have to hope for one hold back juror and imo MOST jurors who are on the fence have some reason or one little thing that holds them back and there just isn't much of anything in this case, her guilt is so obvious and her bad acts many from the day of this poor child's brutal murder to the day they found his tortured, abused little body. I detest putting it that way but that's exactly what this wicked bitc* deserves said as it is what she DID.

Imo of course and the opinion I believe of all in the world who know the facts in this one.

Defense will have 2 witnesses.
Well one will be their doctor. Any idea who the other is?

Are they not giving the line ups in either of these trials? I now in Daybell they aren't, that's typical Judge Boyce if you ask me though. When did this become a thing?

I'd guess their doctor and if they could drum one up maybe a family member or friend or someone who will make a pathetic show of saying they've always seen or believed she had issues or some such. What else can there be? Or someone we don't know of that saw some mental issue she claims at some point in her life.

Or maybe the doctor who treated her anxiety before the murder? I think T took meds for anxiety.

Yeah they are only going for insanity so I doubt they'd dance much with anything other than something touching on her mental health or issues. Family, friend, doctor, even detective or someone they think witnessed something or can testify as to her mental health or some event.

She and they did a big fight to access things from like when she was a teen or in her 20s or some such. Don't know if they ever managed it. She referenced something like that when writing letter and representing herself, etc. Can't quite recall. As if there was some history of something but back when.

I can't imagine anything in this case changing the fact she CLEARLY knew what she was doing for days and days on end and the fact that she did it. I guess they can try though.

This sounds like it will be wrapping up Monday or Tuesday and go to the jury, is that how you understand it @Whatsnext ? One final witness for prosecution, then the defense expert and then closing arguments and jury instruction. Does the defense plan on any other witnesses? And do you know who the last person is for the prosecution?

I was able to catch the tail end of the last witness today and then the talk after of the judge with the attorneys and plans for Monday, etc.
So I watched the Law and Crime one you posted above. Didn't have time until this morning. As always Good Lord is she hard to listen to. I wish their audio was better but I could understand most of it. I never did get or hear where she shot him. The problem with Letecia is I think every story and thing she does is crazy but I don't think she is insane. This very video makes her seem not so smart and what a crazy story but the reason is the stories have to be outlandish to explain all the outlandish events and facts. Nothing else would fit them. It isn't crazy, it is desperation for a story to fit each thing LE finds out, etc.

So in it she claims Layna had to help carry Gannon up the stairs and that Harley sleeps deep (which we also heard from Harley) and that Harley never heard a thing... Your take on that? Did Layna say such a thing or learn later that she must have helped carry him? Do they mean in the suitcase? Or is T covering for her daughter and putting it on Layna...? Or did Layna share such with investigators?

I think that Dr Torres was asked about that by Mr Young . IIRC she had read Lainas statement and it didn’t corraborate T's version. Laina had to stay outside while T was cleaning .
I am wondering who the last prosecution witness will be, maybe Landen? Dr Grey?

A doctor or Landen or even Laina (although I think that unlikely)...? I imagine they will end it on a strong and meaningful note...

So most likely the part about Laina was all fabrication by T? I wasn't sure as it seemed she was responding to something she thought they knew but on the other hand she may have been plainting that seed by acting like they knew such a thing (false thing) to turn it to them thinking such if that makes any sense.

I have this feeling and have had for a long time that Harley helped get him out of the house and up the stairs.... I think the emphasis on her sleeping hard both from T and then from Harley on the stand is done to protect her and I don't buy it and found it an odd point and now a second time with T having said it back when I note it again.

I'm not advocating for anything to happen to Harley but I truly believe she DID a thing or two and KNEW a thing or two, after the fact. I do believe she may have convinced herself it wasn't what she thought or T may have told her some story AND he may have been in the suitcase...

I don't know, but the FBI interrogators surely would have found that out? Harley seems like a person who is easily intimidated to me.
And if they found that out, wouldn't there have been charges against her? I can't imagine that they would just drop it....

I can. I certainly don't think they would do it in every case but I can see them doing it depending on the circumstances, what she thought and what she told them or was willing to tell them to help.

I honestly don't think they necessarily needed her though. They had plenty on T and all she really did was barely confirm a few things they already knew, places they went, etc. Anything beyond that she didn't recall, or know anything. Supposedly.

Again, I don't feel she needs any more grief and I guess I'll always remain not entirely convinced of it all where she is concerned. I also am not saying she might have told the total truth, she well may have but I feel once or twice she didn't.

Oh well. The trial goes on and is close to wrapping up. Long time coming...

@Whatsnext. IMO It's because of the U.S. justice system is coddling these pieces of waste. THEIR precious rights. And the defendant uses any excuse possible. And the defense attorneys do it for them too. No responsibility. Nothing but excuses. I could do something and use the mental health EXCUSE. But I AM responsible for what I DO.

I heard something very interesting last night but highly infuriating and very scary.

I was listening to Lori Hellis, an attorney who is attending the Daybell case and covers crime.

She said in response to a question that came up in chat that the public defender system is in bad shape and because rate of pay hasn't kept up and doesn't come close to matching private sector pay that many states are having real issues as not enough attorneys do public defender work. She couldn't recall what ID's rate of pay was offhand but said about 1/2 is what it is versus private sector attorneys. [Personally I believe private pay is TOO HIGH but still one isn't going to work for the far lower pay and waste their time especially in these big cases and all those billable hours lost]

She said that in OREGON the state of affairs is so bad @Kimster with the lack of public defenders that prosecutors are having to dismiss cases and they are having to let people out of jail/prison!

Everyone is fortunate I've just gotten up and haven't had any coffee yet because otherwise I'd have a LOT to say about this. I'll let others comment and join in later after coffee.

Here they are in a lottery system... or they were a few years ago - not sure if it's changed or not, to serve as public defender. They didn't have a choice but to serve. In some ways that's a very good system but I sure can think of some attorneys that would be sure to do as little as possible for thinking they were forced to serve

Wow, I am really naive, I thought they wouldn't do that. She better never break the law in any way. But seriously, she is free from her mother and is on a good way.

We have something like that I believe and the same with GALs. All attorneys have to do something pro bono, public defender or GAL-wise I believe, not sure they all have to do Public Defender work though. And I think it doesn't apply when it is a murder case or something so big for instance. In that case, they have to have not your average public defender and as we know for death penalty cases, it is different yet again. We don't have the DP here.

We do have actual public defender offices with actual public defenders though where that is their job. With GALs on the other hand, there is a list that I think they go down and pick the next one on it, etc. of family attorneys.

Not up on all the details but I am not surprised it is a problem. Even those that hold the public defender position here, are paid far less than private attorneys.

Can't say it is the case here but don't you just feel as if something was not said? A few things that would have been obvious questions I felt were skirted. Now they could have done it in a way when she went in to see them where they said you don't have to tell us "this" if you just tell us about "that" where it may have been known or suspected but if she never has to voice it they never have to go there.

I honestly don't know but they make deals and negotiate just as much as the next agency and on top of it she was a minor so it would be a tough one to charge all the way around I think. She may have helped move a suitcase for instance and even though deep down had to wonder at its weight and with Gannon missing, the investigator could definitely say oh come on now, you had to know... On some level... Same with on their trip and the air on, dogs given pot treats, and she never wanted more clothing from the back? That part is a reach for me, a big reach and it is the one time on the stand she most obviously fumbled imo. And anyone who has watched her videos knows she is a "clothes horse", loves cute clothing and I don't see her going without access to her clothing plus her fumble on the stand...

But yes, I agree, she is free from mom (at least physically) and can make her life what she likes or try to and I hope she does so.
