To start. I have always found Serial Killers fascinating. What makes them do what they do?. I know I am not the only one. This is the place to talk about it. I'll start. Who do you find the most fascinating and why?.

I'm guessing Kimster posted the pictures of Serial Killers at the top of the post. Challenge. Can you name them?.
I did not put that up there, but just since we're talking about it I'll let you know that we will be adding pictures at the tops of the first post because we need that for our new format.

Back to your question, I cannot name all of them!

I'm fascinated by the Zodiac Killer. Probably because he's still unknown. And we do have a separate thread about him here: The Zodiac Killer in SF.

Also the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway, as he operated where I live now. And several of his victims are still missing or unidentified.

And Ted Bundy, for the same reasons. Obviously before my time. He was executed before I turned 3. But he grew up in the city that I live in now! Did anyone watch the movie with Zac Effron? I lot of people had some issues with it but I thought it was really well done.
I'm not sure about if I saw that movie or not? I've only seen one movie about Ted Bundy.

A less "prolific" serial killer with "only" 7 known victims - Joseph Duncan.
He killed the Groene family and kidnapped Shasta and Dylan less than 30 minutes from where I grew up. I drove by their house the night he attacked, but it was several hours prior, and I didn't even realize until months later.

If you really want to dig into the mind of a psychopath, though... wow. Not for the faint hearted. It will make you angry. It will make you disgusted. He tries to make himself appear the "victim" because of the "system". But it's not often we actually get to see what a serial killer puts out there...

He had a blog. His last entry just days prior to killing the Groene family and taking the kids. Blogging The Fifth Nail

He also has a "friend" outside of prison who gets letters from him to post a blog from death row.... Most recent entry is July of this year. The Fifth Nail Exposed: Chronicles
I had no idea he had that much history behind him.

That was a terrible case. He is evil. And I can't believe they can't stop him from posting even through someone else. Such should not be legal nor allowed imo.

I believe it was a Netflix original. So if you don't have Netflix, probably not.
A lot of people were upset. "They're glorifying a killer! Making him seem so charming and attractive." Uhhhh, yeah. That was kind of the point. Serial killers aren't typically ugly monsters with no charisma. That's how he got away with it.

"The Deliberate Stranger"? With "Mark Harmon". That was good. But you can't find it anywhere now. It was in the 80's. We saw it in School. It was a T.V. Miniseries. The Movie "Ted Bundy" from the 2000's is absolute trash.
Yes it seems like Mark Harmon could have been the actor. I do believe it was before I moved to Oregon so that timeline is perfect.

He was the perfect example of that.

Interesting. I am positive I have seen that one as I can picture Mark Harmon in the role. I as others have seen so many things on Bundy I can't keep them all straight. Add in books and even more so.

It was interesting Ann Rule felt they missed that Bundy had some underlying insecurities the WikiP article said. One doesn't think of someone so cold and emotionless as insecure but talking of the psyche of them, I think most types of things like whatever buzzword one wants to use, psychopath/sociopath/narcissitic sociopath covers great insecurity and inferiority they can't let others see or fear others seeing... It doesn't seem to fit with types seeming to have no emotion to speak of but I believe it is the case deep down.

Not an excuse for it, I just believe it plays into it if studying "them".

A sidenote: Interesting he expressed no interest in seeing the movie. Some would probably glory in that and in correcting it, etc. Also surprised death row would allow movie watching...

Well at that time he was still proclaiming he was innocent. It wasn't until closer to his execution did he admit to it and that was to lead them to bodies in exchange for time. He didn't want to die. Either did your victims Ted.
Yah. He was on death row and convicted though per the article. And so many of them actually seem to "enjoy" seeing their fame. BTK comes to mind, he likely would enjoy it.

While Lori Vallow may be different than the types here, she told her fellow inmate her hearing or whatever was going to be on TV and could not wait to see, was all excited for it...

I guess in a way I am thinking about their psyches again... Some have a real interest in seeing such things and wanting that notorious "name" and in their sick eyes "fame".

Oh, another serial killer that always gets to me is Michael Swango:
The main thing that gets to me about Swango is that he was a doctor, and time and time again, patients & hospital staff reported him to doctors and university higher-ups; they ALL ignored the reports because, IMO, they didn't want their precious university to look bad, and they thought they were smarter than lowly nurses & patients. A medical thriller from Pulitzer Prize–winning author James B. Stewart about serial killer doctor Michael Swango and the medical community that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities.

No one could believe that the handsome young doctor might be a serial killer. Wherever he was hired—in Ohio, Illinois, New York, South Dakota—Michael Swango at first seemed the model physician. Then his patients began dying under suspicious circumstances.

At once a gripping read and a hard-hitting look at the inner workings of the American medical system, Blind Eye describes a professional hierarchy where doctors repeatedly accept the word of fellow physicians over that of nurses, hospital employees, and patients—even as horrible truths begin to emerge. With the prodigious investigative reporting that has defined his Pulitzer Prize–winning career, James B. Stewart has tracked down survivors, relatives of victims, and shaken coworkers to unearth the evidence that may finally lead to Swango’s conviction.

Combining meticulous research with spellbinding prose, Stewart has written a shocking chronicle of a psychopathic doctor and of the medical establishment that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities. <snip>

There are nurses that will kill patients and when they're found out they're fired, but the cops aren't called. Hospitals don't like bad press. So the nurses go on to another hospital and the former hospital can only confirm their dates of employment. I've seen at least two shows about this. There is a character on this seasons Fargo that is one of those.
