Three missing girls in Wenatchee found dead, father still missing

Three missing girls in the Wenatchee area were found dead, according to the Wenatchee Police Department.

According to the police department, police responded to reports of a civil complaint when the mom of three young girls reported that her daughters did not return after a planned visitation with their father.

Police said Decker was believed to be living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup, which was last seen heading west on Highway 2 from Wenatchee on May 30.

WSP was contacted Friday night for an Amber Alert request, but Wenatchee Police said it did not meet the required criteria, and an Endangered Missing Person Alert was issued.

Law enforcement eventually found Decker's car unoccupied near the Rock Island Campground.

Other officers searched the immediate area and found the bodies of the three missing girls.

Decker is wanted for three counts of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. Police do not know if Decker is currently armed, but he may still pose a significant risk, according to police.

I mean…a little. But much like Oregon, it stays pretty dense all year. Late fall / early winter would likely be the best shot, but it’s still hard.
IF he was actually trying to be “on the run” and surviving out there, there’s a better chance of someone coming across him. But IF he walked away from that truck with the intention to get “lost” and stay hidden (maybe even with a tarp or other means of concealment), chances are extremely low.
Do they have fall deer hunts out there?

Just to further clarify, every year we have people who go missing where it's KNOWN what location they're at in the woods. They disappeared off a specific trail or a specific hunting camp or a specific road. And S&R fails to find them. Here they don't have any idea if he even went in a certain direction.
Almost every year we see new flyers: "HIKERS! Keep an eye out for...." or "HUNTERS! Keep an eye out for...." specific gear items, tents, clothes, bones, etc.
I do hope someone stumbles across him though. If for nothing else than peace of mind for the girls' mom and family.

Deer shed hunters and mushroom hunters fund a lot of them because they are looking for something that's basically bone colored and on the ground.

That's why I was asking. :)

Search for Travis Decker scaled back amid decline in new leads

The search for Travis Decker, the father wanted for murdering his daughters in late May, has been scaled back after what Washington authorities say is a decline in new investigative leads.

In an update Friday, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said that, while the criminal investigation remains ongoing, there has been an “exhaustive” search of several areas. The most recent search north of the Mineral Springs campground in the Blewett Pass area yielded “inconclusive evidence,” CCSO said.

Although there have been many reported sightings of Decker over the course of several weeks, CCSO said there is currently not enough information to confirm whether Decker is alive or dead.

Eight weeks in, Travis Decker manhunt in WA scales back as tips slow

The Chelan County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) released an update on the manhunt for triple-murder suspect Travis Decker on Friday, saying that search efforts have been scaled back, along with the number of community tips on potential sightings.

Friday marks eight weeks since 32-year-old Travis Decker picked up his three daughters – Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5 – from their home in Wenatchee, Washington.

On Friday, July 25, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office announced that detectives are continuing to assess evidence and search for new investigative leads. However, a decrease in leads and tips on Decker's location has led to a "reduced footprint" from deputies and law enforcement agencies in the search.

Since the manhunt was launched, law enforcement personnel have conducted an exhaustive search for Decker in the wilderness area surrounding the crime scene. Several areas have been searched, with the focus remaining on the Blewett Pass and Enchantments area between Chelan and Kittitas counties.

"As of today, Mr. Decker has still not been located, and there is insufficient information to suggest that he is alive, nor if he is deceased," the Chelan County Sheriff's Office wrote in a Friday, July 25 press release.

The most recent search focused on the Blewett Pass area near the Mineral Springs campground. Deputies said the potential evidence and intelligence gathered in this area cannot confirm any information linked to Decker.

The CCSO suggested that the upcoming bear hunting season, which opens in August, may be the next opportunity to bring in more leads and tips from the public.

"As bear hunting season opens in August, and others continue their outdoor pursuits, we strongly encourage everyone venturing out into these areas [to] remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, persons, or items they may come across by reporting it to 911 immediately," the CCSO wrote. "We also ask those who do come across something to mark the location using GPS or other marking form if they are able to, and even take pictures if it is safe."

The CCSO reiterated that detectives are still actively engaged in processing evidence and will notify the public when new leads or tips emerge.

Tips slowed, I honestly never recall a ton of tips, just a few that did not pan out. LE says themselves there is not enough info to call him dead or alive.

I think the title should be changed, it hints at the 3 girls missing (they are not) and really doesn't indicate he is missing (he is).

I think myself it is absolutely ridiculous how 95 percent of people in every case assume a person is dead after a certain length of time. This man is not dead imo but either way, we don't know LE doesn't either.

Our area is HUGE into deer hunting. Both states are but I;d say WI in particular. No one calls in others as missing, what the heck is that about?? Are there escaped ex cons? Women calling upset their hub went hunting trying to wreck his good time? Weird. I mean down to the equipment used? Are they people breaking probation and they hope for warrants?

Sorry just odd to me. Our guys to out TO HUNT. Period. I mean perhaps thy may post some signs of long wanted fugitivds but even if that, that's it. It's hunting, not criminal week. And we ae as close to the CA border as you are so that's not it.

Swiftwater team sweeps Icicle in Travis Decker search

A six-member water rescue team waded and swam a two-mile extent of the upper Icicle River on Wednesday, seeking further evidence for the whereabouts of accused murderer Travis Decker — or even his remains.

But the long search by the Chelan County Sheriff’s Swiftwater Rescue Team did not yield any results, and authorities say they’ll continue to seek the man accused of smothering his three young daughters to death at an Icicle River campsite nearly two months ago.

The team involves sheriff's deputies as well as firefighters from local departments, plus volunteers. The Wednesday search also doubled as a training exercise for members to maintain certification, said team coordinator Deputy Jerid Sutherland. Sheriff Mike Morrison, who worked on the swiftwater team while a deputy, joined the effort.

The riverflow now is "feet lower" than it was at the time of the murders, Sutherland said, aiding the team's effort. Morrison said the river was swept by searchers even while it ran high, shortly after the murders, when a National Park Service swiftwater team spent four days on the effort.

Despite the lack of findings, Morrison said, "It's worth trying."

Judge holds back release of Wenatchee police records in Decker case

A Chelan County judge has ordered Wenatchee police not to release certain records to media and the public in the Travis Decker murder case.

Chelan County Superior Court Judge Kristin Ferrera agreed July 30 to place a hold on records from two Wenatchee Police Department cases related to the kidnapping and murders of Paityn, Evelyn and Olivia Decker, allegedly at the hands of their father Travis Decker. News agencies including KOMO, KIRO, and NBC all had sought documents in the case.

Decker, 32, is still being sought in a national manhunt. Chelan County Prosecutor Robert Sealby and the girls’ mother, filing as "Jane Doe," sued July 24 to prohibit the Wenatchee Police Department from answering requests for public records related to the girls’ kidnapping by their father on May 30.

Neither Travis Decker nor the children are identified by name in the court filings, but the case numbers and circumstances described are identical to those in the child-murder investigation.

In briefings, Sealby argued alongside "Jane Doe's" attorney Shelby R. Stoner that any release of records would jeopardize the Wenatchee woman's privacy, and complicate the search for Travis Decker. He is considered at-large and dangerous, with a $20,000 reward offered for assistance in his capture.

‘We have to keep every possibility open’: The search for Travis Decker continues at smaller scale

As months pass with no new leads, the same question remains in Wenatchee: Where is Travis Decker?

The 32-year-old from Wenatchee has been on the run since May 30, when, according to law enforcement, he kidnapped and later killed his three daughters – 5-year-old Olivia, 8-year-old Evelyn and 9-year-old Paityn – at the Rock Island Campground in Leavenworth, Washington, then fled into the nearby mountains.

The incident sparked a massive manhunt involving numerous local, state and federal agencies, which included the National Guard, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Forest Services and the FBI .

Now, over two months later, the search continues – but on a much smaller scale.

The U.S. Marshals are still the primary department on the search effort, along with a swift water rescue team, a high-angle rope rescue team and a search and rescue team, said Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison.

Despite multiple potential sightings of the fugitive since the search began, which expanded to as far as Idaho, leads have turned up fruitless.

“There’s a possibility he’s alive and also a strong possibility that he is deceased,” Morrison said. “I would love to lean one way and say, ‘Yep, he’s deceased, there’s no way he got out of here.’ But I understand that’d be irresponsible and that we have to keep every possibility open.”

Morrison attributes two main reasons to Decker’s continued disappearance: challenging terrain and a 3½ day head start.

The Cascades Range is rugged and remote. Decker is considered an experienced survivalist able to spend days, perhaps weeks, in the forest.

“I think since he was young enough and in good enough shape that he could have gotten far enough out there that it would make it very hard to locate,” Morrison said.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office is working with federal partners to set up a follow-up search with different technology.

“We understand the public’s frustration because the sheriff’s office feels the same frustration,” he said. “We want him found yesterday. But we also recognize that it does take perseverance in this career. Sometimes you do have to continue to push on and stick with the case, and sometimes you’ll get your break.

“Originally, our first thought was he would never do this. If he did this, he killed himself because who could do this and live with themselves?” Cozart said. “Now, we don’t really ever know if he was alive. And so I really don’t have any ideas.”

The United States Marshals Service is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading directly to Travis Decker’s arrest. Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest U.S. Marshals office, the U.S. Marshals Service Communications Center at (800) 336-0102, or USMS Tips at usmarshals.gov/tips.

FBI requests closure of Leavenworth-area campgrounds as search for murder suspect Travis Decker continues

Federal authorities have requested a three-day closure of several campgrounds, trail heads, hiking trails and forest service roads in the Leavenworth area as an intensive search continues for murder suspect Travis Decker.

The areas of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will be closed for three days, beginning Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m.

Authorities say the closures will take place as the search continues for Decker, a Wenatchee man accused of murdering his three young daughters near the Rock Island Campground.

VERY good. I guess he isn't that great at the survivalist thing problem and isn't all that bright. Worth listening to imo.

FBI recovers possible evidence in Leavenworth, WA search for Travis Decker

Federal investigators say they have recovered several items that could be connected to the case of wanted murder suspect Travis Decker following a large-scale search near Rock Island Campground earlier this week.

The FBI Seattle field office announced Thursday that more than 100 personnel took part in a two-day grid search operation on Aug. 25 and 26.

Agents and partner agencies combed through roughly 247 acres of rugged forest near Leavenworth in an effort to locate Decker or evidence tied to the June killings of his three daughters.

"The mission of the search was to locate Travis Decker, discover signs of his whereabouts, or find any other evidence of the murder of his three daughters," said W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Seattle.

Investigators said several items were recovered during the operation and are being examined to determine if they are connected to the case. Authorities cautioned that final results will take time.

"Finding this potential evidence emphasizes the value in having various teams search an area multiple times, especially in such challenging conditions," Herrington said.

The FBI said the search covered more ground than originally planned, with teams documenting more than 1 million square meters of dense terrain.

Electronic mapping of the operation has been provided to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office and other federal partners.

The search was described as the most extensive of its kind in the area to date. Crews worked through temperatures approaching 100 degrees and thick vegetation.

Alongside FBI Seattle, participating agencies included the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals Service, Port of Seattle Police Department, Yakima Police Department, U.S. Forest Service’s Wenatchee River District, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, and Central Washington University’s anthropology department.
