Three missing girls in Wenatchee found dead, father still missing

Three missing girls in the Wenatchee area were found dead, according to the Wenatchee Police Department.

According to the police department, police responded to reports of a civil complaint when the mom of three young girls reported that her daughters did not return after a planned visitation with their father.

Police said Decker was believed to be living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup, which was last seen heading west on Highway 2 from Wenatchee on May 30.

WSP was contacted Friday night for an Amber Alert request, but Wenatchee Police said it did not meet the required criteria, and an Endangered Missing Person Alert was issued.

Law enforcement eventually found Decker's car unoccupied near the Rock Island Campground.

Other officers searched the immediate area and found the bodies of the three missing girls.

Decker is wanted for three counts of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. Police do not know if Decker is currently armed, but he may still pose a significant risk, according to police.

FBI recovers possible evidence in Leavenworth, WA search for Travis Decker

Federal investigators say they have recovered several items that could be connected to the case of wanted murder suspect Travis Decker following a large-scale search near Rock Island Campground earlier this week.

The FBI Seattle field office announced Thursday that more than 100 personnel took part in a two-day grid search operation on Aug. 25 and 26.

Agents and partner agencies combed through roughly 247 acres of rugged forest near Leavenworth in an effort to locate Decker or evidence tied to the June killings of his three daughters.

"The mission of the search was to locate Travis Decker, discover signs of his whereabouts, or find any other evidence of the murder of his three daughters," said W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Seattle.

Investigators said several items were recovered during the operation and are being examined to determine if they are connected to the case. Authorities cautioned that final results will take time.

"Finding this potential evidence emphasizes the value in having various teams search an area multiple times, especially in such challenging conditions," Herrington said.

The FBI said the search covered more ground than originally planned, with teams documenting more than 1 million square meters of dense terrain.

Electronic mapping of the operation has been provided to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office and other federal partners.

The search was described as the most extensive of its kind in the area to date. Crews worked through temperatures approaching 100 degrees and thick vegetation.

Alongside FBI Seattle, participating agencies included the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals Service, Port of Seattle Police Department, Yakima Police Department, U.S. Forest Service’s Wenatchee River District, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, and Central Washington University’s anthropology department.
Bones found and sending for testing. I'm not going to hold my breath on this one yet since bones found in the woods are probably 90+% animal.

His dropping or leaving items, if he even did, seems it would be a needle in a haystack. Unless they knew he was staying in that area, I'm not going to get excited right now that any item belonged to him or related to him. Guessing something brought them there though...?

Not shocking at all to find bones in the woods and far more chance than not of not being human.

Body of WA triple-murder suspect Travis Decker found, authorities say

Travis Decker, the man wanted in the kidnappings and murders of his three daughters, has been found dead.

The Chelan County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a press release Thursday that human remains were found in a remote wooded area south of Leavenworth, believed to be the body of Travis Decker.

While the body has not yet been positively identified, authorities say preliminary findings suggest the remains belong to Decker. The scene is currently being processed, with DNA analysis to follow.

Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison said the discovery of the remains was a result of another routine grid-by-grid search this week. The body was located less than a mile from the original crime scene.

Sheriff Morrison said the body showed signs of significant decomposition, but expects DNA results from the coroner's office as soon as Friday.

Wow - less than a mile. How the heck did they miss him in the original search?

(CNN) — Months after the bodies of three young sisters were found abandoned in the Washington state wilderness, authorities believe they’ve found the remains of the man accused of killing them: their father.

Human remains found this week in dense woods south of Leavenworth – just a few miles from the campground where the girls’ bodies were found – could spell the end of a manhunt that stretched deep into the remote wilderness and included false alarms across states where tipsters thought they had spotted Travis Decker.

“While positive identification has not yet been confirmed, preliminary findings suggest the remains belong to Travis Decker,” the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said in a Thursday statement.

Decker – an Army veteran skilled in wilderness survival – had been on the loose since May 30, when he failed to bring his daughters home after what was supposed to be a three-hour custody visit.

Three days later, the bodies of 5-year-old Olivia, 8-year-old Evelyn and 9-year-old Paityn were found with plastic bags over their heads at an abandoned campsite in the Washington Cascades.

After the gruesome discovery in a remote, picturesque region known for hiking and camping, Decker’s truck was found June 2, abandoned in the area of Rock Island Campground. His daughters’ bodies were nearly 100 yards away down a small embankment, along with zip ties and plastic bags found strewn throughout the area, according to a police affidavit.

Authorities also found a bloody fingerprint on the truck’s tailgate, as well as Decker’s dog, which was taken to a humane society for care.

DNA samples obtained from the bags and cable ties found near the girls’ bodies matched the profile for Decker, the sheriff’s office said. No other DNA was found on the bags or the cable ties, authorities said at the time.

In the months since, local, state and federal officials have searched for Deckerwithout knowing whether he was still alive.

Drones, a swift water team, cadaver dogs and even GoPros have been used in a multiagency search complicated by treacherous terrain and the fact that Decker had a three-day head start.

Decker likely escaped on foot after leaving behind his truck, Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison has told CNN. He also left behind equipment, meaning he was unprepared unless he stashed supplies out in the woods.

As the arduous manhunt may have come to an end, CNN has reached out to the US Marshals Service for more information.

The sheriff’s office has been in touch with the Decker family about the investigation and its findings, the agency said

Authorities believe the remains of Washington father Travis Decker have been found. Decker picked up his three young daughters for a visitation on May 30 and has been out of contact since, with the three girls – 9, 8, and 5 – found dead near a central Washington campground on June 2.

With Decker accused of murdering the girls, his disappearance sparked a multi-state, multi-month manhunt, with it believed that Decker used his repertoire of survival skills to travel and live in remote and rugged areas during that time.

While many leads had been investigated and tips were pursued, there weren’t many updates related to Decker’s whereabouts until a September 18 report on the matter. In that update, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office announced that human remains were discovered in a remote wooded area south of the town of Leavenworth, with those remains believed to be those of Travis Decker based on preliminary findings.

If the remains are indeed those of Decker, Decker may not have traveled as far as was believed – officials once said he could be “anywhere within the nation.” Rock Island Campground, where the girls were found dead, is located about 11 miles west of Leavenworth. Based on the press release, it sounds like his remains were discovered in the general area of this town, but to the south.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Thursday, Sept. 18, that the discovery was made during a search coordinated by the U.S. Marshals Service.

“While positive identification has not yet been confirmed, preliminary findings suggest the remains belong to Travis Decker,” the statement said.

Decker, 32, has been the target of a large manhunt since June 2, when a sheriff’s deputy in Washington found his truck and the bodies of his three daughters — Paitlyn, 9; Evelyn, 8; and Olivia, 5 — near Rock Island Campground, west of Leavenworth.

Decker had failed to return the girls to their mother’s home in Wenatchee following a scheduled visit. Their cause of death was determined to be suffocation.

Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison told Seattle TV station KIRO that the remains were on Grindstone Mountain, a few miles from where the girls’ bodies were found.

The search had been concentrated in the mountainous area near Leavenworth, though a mistaken report of a sighting briefly turned attention to Idaho in July.

A week after the discovery of the girls’ bodies, hikers reported seeing a man matching Decker’s description in a Cascade Range backpacking area called the Enchantments. Dog teams tracked a trail to Highway 97 south of Leavenworth.

The map above shows key points in the search:

1/ Rock Island Campground, on Upper Icicle Creek, where the bodies were found.

2/ Colchuck Lake, where the suspicious person was spotted on June 9.

3/ Ingalls Creek Trailhead, where the trail tracked by dog teams ended.

4/ Bear Creek, Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho; reported sighting July 5. The Marshals Service said on July 9 that its agents determined that the man was notTravis Decker.

5/ Grindstone Mountain, where the remains were found.

Decker was an infantryman in the Army from March 2013 to July 2021, including a deployment in Afghanistan. He had training in navigation and survival, authorities said, and once spent more than two months living in the backwoods off the grid.

Last September, Decker’s ex-wife, Whitney Decker, wrote in a petition to modify their parenting plan that his mental health had worsened and that he had become increasingly unstable. He was often living out of his truck, and she sought to restrict him from having overnight visits with their daughters until he found housing

murdered girls

In a statement Thursday, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said “positive identification has not yet been confirmed” but preliminary findings suggest the remains belong to the father. The remains were found a few miles from where the girls’ bodies were located, according to reports CBS’ KIRO-TV.
The findings come after the three girls were found dead earlier in June.

As authorities conduct a thorough examination of the recently recovered remains, here’s what we know about the brief timeline of the murder investigation.
.
The charges were laid after his three daughters Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, were reported missing by their mother, Whitney Decker, on May 30. Whitney and Travis reportedly split in 2022.
The daughters had left home to see their father for a custody visit. The daughters didn’t return home in a timely manner and calls made by their mother when she noticed they hadn’t yet returned went unanswered.
A few days later, the bodies of the girls and Decker’s phone and his truck were found on June 2 in a remote campground in the state of Washington. Decker was nowhere to be found and his absence sparked a massive manhunt by the police that included scores of people from various organizations and agencies.

On Thursday, the police said Decker’s remains were located a few miles away from where the daughters’ bodies were found. The daughters are said to have died from suffocation.

Was Travis Decker headed to Canada?

There were three possible sightings in the Washington and Idaho areas of the father from June onwards but all three turned out to be unsuccessful. Prior to his disappearance and the daughters’ death, officials found the father also searched online “how to move Canada,” “how does a person move to Canada,” and “jobs Canada.” The search history was revealed according to an affidavit by a U.S. Marshals Service dated June 5 that was first obtained by The Independent.
The affidavit says that the remains of the sisters were located “relatively close to the Canadian border and approximately 11 miles from the Pacific Crest Trail, a well-established trail that leads directly to Canada.”

Due to Decker’s previous training as an ex-soldier, he was declared armed and dangerous by the authorities

Not that it matters but here he was found a few miles away and in other reports it was within a mile.

I did a screenshot map showing the campground and the mountain peak. Depending where on the mountain he was found, it looks to be between 1 and 3 miles. So he did not get far, thats for sure. I think its reasonsble to summise that he killed himself.

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — The Chelan County Sheriff’s announced that they have found human remains in a remote area that are believed to be that of Travis Decker.
This week, the US Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force headed up a search, including Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, US Border Patrol, US Forest Service, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI.
During that search, human remains were found in a remote wooded area south of Leavenworth.
Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison told KIRO 7 that the remains were found on Grindstone Mountain, off Icicle Road. This is a few miles away from where the bodies of Decker’s three daughters were found.
Crews had to be dropped in via a Spokane County helicopter due to the rough terrain.
Drones and cadaver dogs helped locate the remains.
While the remains will need to be positively identified, preliminary findings suggest that the remains belong to Decker, the sheriff’s office said.
Morrison told KIRO 7 that some items found near the remains, like clothing, were similar to what Decker was wearing when he left. Crews also found “personal items” but did not specify what those were.

This is a developing story.
Law enforcement says Decker kidnapped and killed his three young daughters-- Paityn (9), Evelyn (8), and Olivia (5)-- on May 30 during a scheduled custody visit.
He has been wanted locally and federally ever since.
On June 2, Decker’s truck was found unoccupied near the Rock Island Campground.
The bodies of girls were found nearby.
During the search for Decker, law enforcement warned that he had military survival training and was likely in remote areas. Several areas in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest were closed as crews scoured the terrain for Decker.

Interview with the sheriff

.74 miles of the initial crime scene. Lots of other info in the interview.

How the heck did they miss him? I wonder if he doubled back once he knew where they were searching or whether he never went far in the first place and just killed himself.
