Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

He accepted a plea deal!

I believe this is a very good thing. If I was guilty, I'd want to be killed ASAP.

Life in prison would be worse than the death penalty. I'm sure he's not going to be popular, and will deal with a lot of :poop: in prison.

I have no idea why the Gonclave's are throwing a hissy fit. Would they prefer to sit through a trial and see the wounds he inflicted on their daughter?

No, it sure isn’t. This is why I’m not happy about this decision. They should have had the families involved.

They should have spoken to the families before accepting the deal. I don't see why they wouldn't accept it though.

The Gonclaves just seem to want attention.

So it looks like the prosecution met last week with some family members.
Prosecutors said in the letter to families that the state was approached last week by Kohberger's defense team asking to be presented with an offer. Prosecutors said they then met with available family members last week, "weighed the right path forward and made a formal offer" to Kohberger.

Looks like the Goncalves family was not among the family members prosecutors met with.

But the Goncalves family is upset by the plea, claiming the Latah County Prosecutor’s Office "mishandled" and rushed the deal.

"They vaguely mentioned a possible plea on Friday, without seeking our input, and presented the plea on Sunday," the family said in a statement. "Latah County should be ashamed of its Prosecutor’s Office. Four wonderful young people lost their lives, yet the victims’ families were treated as opponents from the outset. We weren’t even called about the plea; we received an email with a letter attached. That’s how Latah County’s Prosecutor’s Office treats murder victims’ families. Adding insult to injury, they’re rushing the plea, giving families just one day to coordinate and appear at the courthouse for a plea on July 2."

It's possible the prosecution felt that the Goncalves family was so angry with them for such a long period of time that it was unproductive to engage them face to face.

After watching this video of Steve Goncalves being interviewed I can clearly see that he has such severe anger about the death of his daughter that it effects his ability to reason. He rambles on without making any sense at all and refuses to answer any questions by using deflection. He's doing that because he knows that if he admits to the facts he will look like the fool he is.

I don't like saying things like this about a father who has lost his daughter in a brutal murder but this guy is out of his mind. It looks like he wants the death penalty at all costs and is so angry at the prosecution that he resorts to calling him "some old man" and would rather risk a hung jury on the death penalty than acknowledge that this plea deal is the right way to bring final justice to this case. He actually scares me more than Kohberger. I sure hope he doesn't get violent when this doesn't end the way he wants.

He accepted a plea deal!

I am only just reading this news and all the comments. Great news.

Here's a copy pasta. (I left his ugly mug out of the post. God rest their souls.)

Bryan Kohberger has agreed to plead guilty to all counts in the killings of four University of Idaho students, sparing him from the death penalty, according to a letter sent to victims' family members informing them of the plea deal.
Kohberger -- who was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in connection with the 2022 killings of roommates Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle and Kernodle's boyfriend, Ethan Chapin -- will be sentenced to four consecutive life sentences on the murder counts and the maximum penalty of 10 years on the burglary count, according to the plea agreement.
Prosecutors anticipate sentencing to take place in late July, as long as Kohberger enters the guilty plea as expected at a change of plea hearing that's scheduled for Wednesday, according to the letter received by the family of one of the victims.Kohberger will waive all right to appeal, the agreement said. The state also will seek restitution for the victims and their families, according to the agreement.
The plea comes just weeks before Kohberger's trial was set to begin. Jury selection was set to start on Aug. 4 and opening arguments were scheduled for Aug 18.
Prosecutors said in the letter to families that the state was approached last week by Kohberger's defense team asking to be presented with an offer. Prosecutors said they then met with available family members last week, "weighed the right path forward and made a formal offer" to Kohberger.
"This resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family," prosecutors wrote in the letter. "This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction, appeals. Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decision-making process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interest of justice."

The family statement went on to say: "After more than two years, this is how it concludes with a secretive deal and a hurried effort to close the case without any input from the victims’ families on the plea’s details. Our family is frustrated right now and that will subside and we will come together as always and deal with the reality that we face moving forward."

The University of Idaho said in a statement Monday, "We keep the families of the victims in our hearts as each deals with this outcome in their own way."
"No outcome can replace what they lost," the university said. "We will never forget the four incredible lives taken."

It's not a done deal until it's over.

I watch a lot of YT court videos, most are minor cases where the State will offer a plea deal instead of going to trial. I've seen a few that fell apart after the judge asks the defendant to explain what they did. Most of the time they say what they did and admit guilt. Sometimes these criminal bozo's tell the judge the didn't do anything wrong. The judge then rejects the plea deal and tells the defendant we are going to trial and you face prison time.

I doubt that will happen in this case but who knows.
Yeah, I am not counting on it until it happens. There is always that of chance they will change their mind.

Also I wonder if the judge doesn't believe him when he tells why, how, etc. if it would proceed.

I think that Mr Goncalves doesn't understand that this is the case of State of Idaho v Bryan Kohberger and he doesn't get to call the shots.
Not unusual for families imo for those that have never dealt with the legal process, especially criminal imo.

I don't think they have understood the State is one party and they are not, from day one. Or if they do understand, they are railing against it.

Not going to knock how the family feels and I agree the DP is the right answer for BK and what he did, but there are some perks with this for the families like no appeals ever. I know it is not what they wanted but all things considered, I think it is a good result.

I just checked Idaho's death row inmates. They have carried out only three executions since 1977, the last was in 2012. They currently have nine people on death row with most being there for decades. One has been on death row for 42 years.

I hope the family's can understand that the death penalty is not a good option.

Then there is always the risk he won't get convicted/hung jury. Don't think it all that likely in this case, but it can always happen.

No matter how they feel, not only is it up to the P, if the other 3 families are on board, they don't hold the majority opinion amongst the families either.

The family needs to realize that just because the death penalty was on the table, doesn't mean he would have been convicted on it. They very well could have gone through all the horrors of trial to only get a life conviction and they would have gone through all of that for nothing, not even taking into consideration that it could have ended in mistrial or even the slight possibility of ñot guilty. They also need to realize that there are at least 3 more families that their thoughts and feelings should be taken into consideration.

Yeah, he has had incredible anger from day one and it hasn't eased, and can't blame him of course, but you are right he cannot see straight. The DP has been the only answer for him from day one. Also, he has blamed the P almost from the start too whereas I think they've done an incredible job with evidence and coming against the D atty strongly with responses to her motions, etc. and well prepared.

Trying to catch up, not sure I will but if I do I need to go back and watch this.
