Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

No, it sure isn’t. This is why I’m not happy about this decision. They should have had the families involved.
Sounds like the only involvement the family got was a letter from the prosecution telling them about the deal.

I remember when my former employers son was murdered the DA talked to the parents in person and explained in detail why they did not think going for the death penalty was a good idea. The parents agreed and the killer got life without parole after a trial.

It also depends on the P. We had a sh*t fit when we were advised of a possible deal they were considering. It is up to the P whether to do it or not. In our case though, they listened to us and refused it and proceeded as we wanted. It was way too sweet of a deal though. In our opinion.

That’s the way they should’ve done it. They should’ve sat down with them and talked to them!

This is Wednesday and time will be give shortly and should be televised. He could still withdraw but hopefully unlikely.
It's not a done deal until it's over.

I watch a lot of YT court videos, most are minor cases where the State will offer a plea deal instead of going to trial. I've seen a few that fell apart after the judge asks the defendant to explain what they did. Most of the time they say what they did and admit guilt. Sometimes these criminal bozo's tell the judge the didn't do anything wrong. The judge then rejects the plea deal and tells the defendant we are going to trial and you face prison time.

I doubt that will happen in this case but who knows.

One problem with death penalty cases is the chance of getting a "stealth" juror who is adamantly against the death penalty but slips through voir dire and gets on the jury.
Exactly! Isn't this also the same family that kept getting in trouble with all they were saying? They could have caused a mistrial all by themselves. I'm not sure why they are throwing a fit about this. He's going to be where he belongs for the rest of his life and they didn't have to attend trial every day and hear the stuff you can not unhear and see stuff you can't unsee. I think I'd be elated to have it all tied up like this.

I think they just want him dead and won’t be satisfied until that day.

I think they were surprised by this plea deal and it caused them to publicly shout out their anger. They did state to "Please give us some time." Hopefully with some time they will understand that this is best for them.

It would have been nice for the prosecution to sit down with them in person and explain the deal to them. Maybe they are intimidated by the family's and that's why they sent them a letter instead of having a conversation with them. I don't know.

But as long as it takes to get through the appeals process and then finally put them to death, they might not even be around any more. I'd like the confidence that he would never be getting out again, by itself.

Yep, that's them.

Steve Goncalves blasted out everything he was told. He would have no doubt done that during plea negotiations. If I recall, there was a time the investigators had to stop sharing info with him or his attorney.

I'm not sure it would have been a good idea to have any family members involved in the plea negotiations.

I can see why they would avoid contact with Mr Goncalves but do you think the prosecution should have had a discussion with the other family's about the plea deal? Do you feel that the letter was a good enough method of informing the family's?
