ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

Why aren't they equipped with radar signals?
According to an interview I heard, the people in charge of the decisions didn't want it, just like they nixed other safety features. This was an interview from an engineer that quit the project due to those type of decisions. Can't link as it was a few days ago and we were out of town and no cell or Internet service.

I read the same thing about that.

Rochester firefighter arrested on multiple child pornography charges

Victoria E. Freile

A Rochester firefighter has been arrested on multiple child pornography charges, federal officials announced Friday afternoon.
Brett Marrapese, 31, of Irondequoit, was charged with multiple counts of production, distribution, receipt and possession of child pornography. The charges include explicit material involving prepubescent minors under the age of 12, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle P. Rossi, who is overseeing the case, the investigation began after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received tips in January 2016 and November 2021 about an individual in Rochester uploading suspected child pornography online. The New York State Police allegedly traced the IP addresses to the "Committee Rochester FD 2%," which was associated with the Rochester Fire Department.

Fire department officials said that the City of Rochester imposes internet restrictions for RFD employees, but the RFD's "2% fund" provides separate on-site internet service for personal use, according to the news release.

During interviews conducted in 2016 and 2021, State Police questioned fire department employees with access to the service, including Marrapese, who both times denied any involvement with child pornography, according to officials.

On March 20, 2023, the Irondequoit Police Department received a report from the father of a 13-year-old girl, who had been communicating with an individual on Snapchat using the username "thatdude_2790" and the display name "Taylor." Investigations revealed that the child was persuaded to produce and send explicit images and videos. A second child was discovered to have communicated with "thatdude_2790" on Snapchat and Instagram, where explicit content was exchanged, federal officials said.

Law enforcement executed multiple search warrants, which led them to identify Marrapese as the user behind the "thatdude_2790" and "Taylorsimpson2419" accounts, according to the news release.

Marrapese is accused of communicating with at least 110 minors, including the two children identified as victims by federal authorities, and coercing them into producing and sending child pornography. Marrapese is accused of presenting himself as a teenager of a similar age to the minors, according to federal officials.
Search warrants were executed at Marrapese's residence, camper, vehicle and lockers at the Rochester Fire Department, resulting in the seizure of multiple digital devices, including a cellphone believed to be connected to the previous State Police investigation.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, initial forensic analysis of Marrapese's phone revealed extensive communications where he allegedly persuaded minors to produce and send explicit photographs and videos. The phone also allegedly contained communications involving the production of child pornography and sexual abuse of children, surreptitiously recorded photographs of children, and edited images depicting sexual conduct between adults and children.

Authorities said they recovered 1,393 images and 121 videos of child pornography from Marrapese's mobile phone, some of which depict violent sexual abuse of toddlers.

Marrapese appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark W. Pedersen for an initial hearing and is currently being held pending a detention hearing. The investigation was conducted by the Irondequoit Police Department, under the direction of Chief Scott Peters, and the Federal Bureau.
Last week, City spokeswoman Barbara Pierce said that a firefighter was suspended with pay on June 13, pending the outcome of the investigation. On Friday, she said that Marrapese remains on suspension and that "employment actions will be taken in the coming days based on the allegations in the federal complaint against him."

The Rochester Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 1071, released a statement on Friday:
“Local 1071 is aware of the very serious and disturbing charges filed against Brett Marrapese today. However, IAFF Local 1071 does not have any further information beyond what has already been made public, as the union does not have any role in, or involvement with, the criminal case.”
If convicted, each count carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison, a maximum of 30 years, and a fine of up to $250,000.

The FBI is asking anyone with information regarding Brett Marrapese, known on Instagram as "Taylorsimpson2419" (Screenname "Taylor"), and Snapchat as "Thatdude_2790" (Screenname "Taylor") to contact their tip line at (585) 279-0085.

2016 they had interviews?? SEVEN years ago? How many children exploited by him since then? Or doing acts or probably undressed to send photos he asked for...

This is beyond disgust. And honestly why does a fire department or any government agency provide EMPLOYEES with internet for personal use etc.?

Don't get me wrong, I am glad he is in heaps of trouble now but kind of hard to believe in the past years and when first aware of an issue, they couldn't nail down who it was.... What really went on there... That isn't SO far back they couldn't have gotten to the bottom of it with tech experts, etc...

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Texas’ highest criminal appeals court on Wednesday rejected death-row inmate Rodney Reed’s most recent applications claiming his innocence and seeking a new trial.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals rejections – years in the making – are the culmination of a massive effort by Reed’s defense team that included a two-week evidentiary hearing in Bastrop in July 2021. Dozens of witnesses testified, including the victim Stacey Stites’ mother and her former fiancé Jimmy Fennell.

Reed, now 55, was convicted and sentenced to death in Bastrop County for the murder of 19-year-old Stites in 1996. Reed has maintained his innocence and has fought for years with the legal assistance of the New York-based Innocence Project.

Over the years, Reed’s legal team has filed 10 applications for relief with the CCA, and all have failed. On Wednesday the CCA rejected his ninth and tenth applications.

Jane Pucher, a staff attorney with the Innocence Project representing Reed, panned the CCA’s decision and accused the state of withholding evidence and violating Reed’s constitutional rights.

Ninth application

CCA judges sided with Langley. They said Reed’s ninth application claims “do not warrant relief,” and he failed to prove the state suppressed material evidence or presented materially false testimony at trial.

“We deny relief and dismiss any remaining claims as abuses of the writ,” according to the 129-page opinion. Seven of the CCA’s nine judges joined in rejecting Reed’s applications, while one dissented and another did not participate, according to the opinion.

Tenth application

The CCA judges concluded Reed had not the burden “to demonstrate by a preponderance of the evidence that he is actually innocent of Stacey’s murder. Reed presents no new evidence of innocence.”

Just to point out his DNA is 1 in 700 Billion. And he still denied responsibility. When that's more than the world's population of roughly 7.9 Billion.

Wow. What an evil POS. And WOW, how is it we never heard of this? WHAT THE HECK is wrong with our MSM/NEWS???? No need to answer that as it is rhetorical.
Unbelievable you, and now I, have never heard of this case.

I could say a lot about the news and lack of it with what matters but I don't have time. Everyone should be thankful for that.

To everyone, this article and link Mel posted is worth reading. It isn't long but worth it to see what evil was taken off the street with this one.

The news is overwhelmed by these stories. They can't get into every one that isn't local.

Former School Resource Officer Scot Peterson, the only person other than the gunman to face charges in the 2018 Parkland massacre, accused of failing to rush into the building to confront the mass shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, has been found not guilty on all charges.

Peterson weeped openly as verdicts were read.

Peterson, 60, had facedwith six counts of child neglect with great bodily harm, one count of child neglect without great harm, three counts of culpable negligence and one count of perjury.

The case is being closely watched — Peterson is the only person other than gunman Nikolas Cruz to face charges related to the shooting that took the lives of 17 students and staff, wounding 17 more. Peterson is also the first law enforcement officer charged with child neglect as a “caregiver,” a role that legally applies to parents, babysitters, teachers and even a kidnapper in one unusual case.

Police officers have not been listed among caregivers, but Peterson was not a first responder summoned to the scene to deal with the unfolding crisis. Prosecutors say he was a caregiver because he was the school resource officer assigned specifically to protect the students of the Parkland high school.
