Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The Cleveland mother accused of leaving her 16-month-old daughter alone while she went on a 10-day vacation pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Thursday morning.

Kristel Candelario, 31, was indicted on the charges of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and endangering children.

The judge ordered Candelario held on a $1 million bond and she is scheduled to return to court on July 5.

“It is unfathomable that a mother would leave her 16-month-old child alone without any supervision for 10 days to go on a vacation,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley. “As parents, we are supposed to protect and care for our children. Imagining this child’s suffering, during her last days of life alone, is truly horrifying and we will do everything in our power to seek justice on her behalf.”

According to O’Malley, Candelario left her daughter inside their home near Lorain Avenue and West 97th Street in Cleveland’s Cudell neighborhood on June 6 and didn’t return until June 16 around 8 a.m.

When she returned from her trip to Detroit and Puerto Rico, O’Malley said she found her daughter unresponsive and called police.

Emergency personnel pronounced the little girl dead at the scene. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the child as Jailyn Candelario.

O’Malley added the child was extremely dehydrated and discovered in a Pack-N-Play pin on a liner soiled with urine and feces with soiled blankets.

Kevin Spacey is a “sexual bully”, Southwark Crown Court heard today.

The Oscar-winning actor, 63, faces 12 charges against four male complainants dating between 2001 and 2013.

Prosecutor Christine Agnew KC began her opening of the case by telling the jury that Spacey is an “extremely famous actor who has won a number of awards”.

But she added: “He is also, the prosecution allege a man who sexually assaults other men. A man who does not respect personal boundaries or space, a man who it would seem delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable – a sexual bully.”

Mr Spacey is accused of three counts of indecent assault, seven of sexual assault and two of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.

The allegations relate to a period when Mr Spacey was living in London after being appointed the artistic director of the Old Vic theatre.

Mr Spacey denies all the charges.

There is something strange here that a child that old wouldn't have climbed out of or tipped the pen to get out. Was she abused/scared to, etc.? That's a very mobile child age. Maybe the answer is in the story but I don't dare read more of it.

Hard to even talk about as what hat child suffered probably for quite some time is hard to think about.

I gather she didn't leave 20 baby bottles of water in the pen. Maybe then she'd have survived. This is just all around AWFUL. DESPICABLE. There isn't even any shame in some of these perps. And they ALL plead NOT GUILTY and take no RESPONSIBILITY. Rarely these days do we see otherwise.
