Jackson police investigating missing mother, child; husband in custody

The Jackson Police Department is investigating a missing persons case involving a mother and her young daughter.

Police said 32-year-old Shardee McGill and her 3-year-old daughter, Janae, were reported missing Tuesday night. Her husband, Johnathan McGill, contacted police around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 23 to file the report. He told officers the two left home Sunday evening and never returned.

Investigators said her 2017 black Chevrolet Equinox, with Mississippi license plate HNJ 817, was found unoccupied in Epes, Alabama, by local police.

The Jackson Police Department said it is working closely with Alabama authorities. Johnathan McGill has since been taken into custody by Alabama police.

Jackson police: Body of missing mother found in Alabama, daughter still missing

The Jackson Police Department says the body of a woman at the center of a missing persons case has been found in Alabama, while her young daughter remains missing.

On Wednesday morning, a multi-agency search near Epes, Alabama, discovered Shardee McGill’s body in a shallow body of water. Authorities said the cause of death is still unknown but appears suspicious.

Her daughter, Janae, is still missing. Local, state and federal officials from both Alabama and Mississippi are continuing the search.

It looks like Janae was also likely found.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, authorities located the body of an adult female in the river. The next day, Sept. 26, a child’s body was also recovered.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is working to confirm the identities. Investigators say the case remains ongoing.

Missing 3-year-old from Jackson found dead, 1 day after missing mom also found dead

The search for a missing 3-year-old from Jackson has ended.

Friday afternoon, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones wrote on social media that 3-year-old Janae McGill had been found dead near where her mother, Shardee McGill, had been found dead earlier on Thursday.

Shardee McGill’s body had been located by authorities in a shallow body of water near Epes, Alabama.

The cause of Janae’s death is unknown, while Shardee’s death has been called “suspicious” by authorities.

During the investigation, Alabama law enforcement detained the husband of Shardee and father of Janae, Johnathan McGill.

He was only detained for questioning, authorities said, and later released.

He’s released?
Yep. :(

Jones said the husband was taken in for questioning and later released as their investigation remains ongoing.

“We don’t have any suspect information. We don’t have a cause of death. We don’t have any evidence at this time to lead to any type of arrest,” Jones explained. “It’s too early for that information right now. He was questioned regarding them being missing and the vehicle being located in Alabama.”

Deaths of missing Mississippi mother, 3-year-old daughter found in Alabama river ruled murder-suicide

The September deaths of a Mississippi woman and toddler daughter whose bodies were found in Alabama have been ruled a murder-suicide.

Johnathan McGill called Jackson police about 8:30 p.m. that Tuesday night to report his wife and daughter missing, said Jackson Police Department spokesman Tommie Brown.

He told officers his wife and daughter had left home Sunday night and that he had not heard from them since.

A massive search was conducted by Jackson police, the FBI, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and Alabama’s State Bureau of Investigation.

Shardee McGill’s black Chevrolet Equinox was later found in Epes. The vehicle was not occupied.

Brown said Johnathan McGill was detained and questioned in Alabama and later released.

McGill’s body was found the morning of Thursday, Sept. 25, in a shallow body of water in the Tombigbee River in the Sumter County town of Epes, said Sumter County Coroner Sonya Jemison.

Janae’s body was recovered, also from the Tombigbee, the following day.

Both deaths were the result of drowning, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sgt. Reginal King said Thursday.

McGill’s death was determined to be a suicide, and Janae’s death was a homicide.

“Over the course of the investigation, the determination has been made that there are no additional suspects involved,” King said.

It took me a moment to make sense of what they were saying, maybe due to tiredness. Duh. So they are saying she killed the child and then took her own life... The deaths resulted from drowning though... Shardee's body found in a shallow body of water... How does an adult commit suicide in a shallow body of water? Gun short or pills but not enough to kill because it says result of drowning...? I'm confused. Or did she jump off a bridge and her body floated down into a shallow body of water? Brain fog yet I guess. Maybe someone can clarify because I'm just not getting it and I hadn't even decided he was responsible or anything so it isn't for that reason. I'm just not processing it. Most other indications fit I guess, her vehicle location for instance.

Yes so what was the manner of death in both of them? Did she drown the child (homicide) and then take a load of pills for herself, (suicide) for example?

ETA I have found an article that gives the details. And it says both deaths were from drowning.

"Based on findings from the Department of Forensic Sciences and the investigation, ALEA said both deaths were the result of drowning. McGill’s death was ruled a suicide, while the child’s death was ruled a homicide, with McGill identified as the suspect. Investigators said there are no additional suspects involved."

yeah, I thought i said that. The article above said pretty much the same thing. Resulting from drowning for both.

I also said maybe pills. Now with your article just because they were found different dates I guess it does not mean they went in on different dates right? Maybe she jumped with the daughter into the deep and could not swim and they floated separately of courses or threw the daughter in and then she herself jumped from somewhere.

I did mention pills or some such because mom was found in shallow water... It's confusing as they were found on different dates and in different places if I have it right... I mean I could even see some things if say a boat was involved but there's no evidence of that.

They need to provide more detail. This still leaves too many questions.

Many times if two enter the water at the same time, they are found at different times, especially when different sizes. It is nothing unusual at all.

yeah, that's why I said it as a possibility after thinking on it. at first i thought where they were found and times were vastly different but on learning it wasn't, that made sense then, possibly.

It's ONE possibility. I can think of a few and there really aren't enough details to be certain.

At first quick read too, I thought her being found in shallow water was odd but I GUESS that's where she cold have ended up with the body going downstream BUT again, not enough detail to be sure.

Didn't see anything about tox either in case I missed it? Was she messed up when she did this to the baby or before doing it to both of them?
