Amber Alert case in Delaware now a homicide investigation after mom gave false report: police

Police are now conducting a homicide investigation after an Amber Alert was issued for a 3-year-old girl on Tuesday in New Castle County, Delaware.

Police announced on Wednesday that the Amber Alert has been canceled after investigators say the mother gave police false statements about the alleged abduction.

New Castle County police say police in Maryland are now leading the investigation, although it is unclear at this time why. The FBI was also assisting with the case.

Police say the girl's mother told them that her 3-year-old daughter, Nola Dinkins, was taken by a man at gunpoint along the 500 block of Gender Road around 7:16 p.m. in Newark, Delaware.

The mother allegedly told police that Nola was upset, so she pulled over to the side of the road and that's when the mom said the little girl was abducted by a man with a gun.

Police have been searching the area where the mother reported the false abduction, as well as near the Liberty Pointe Apartments.

Delaware girl reported missing now treated as MD homicide; abduction no longer believed

A 3-year-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert issued the night of June 10 is still missing, though police no longer believe she was abducted, as her mother initially claimed.

The alert for the child, Nola Dinkins, has been canceled, police said.

In a brief news conference held on June 11, New Castle County Police said this was not an abduction and this is being treated as a homicide investigation by Maryland State Police.

The FBI is also investigating.

“The Amber alert is now canceled and there’s no danger to the public,” Botterbusch said. “Sadly, this incident is now being treated as a homicide investigation.”

Phone searches, text messages revealed in trial for Maryland mother accused of killing daughter

The attorney for a Maryland mother accused of killing her 3-year-old daughter argued that she is incompetent to stand trial Friday. However, after a short assessment, the judge disagreed.

During Friday's hearing, the judge conducted a quick evaluation, which included questions about Randle's identity and why she was facing charges.

The judge then ruled that the trial would continue with the state's witness.

The trial was in its fifth day on Friday.

A digital expert shared evidence during testimony, including text messages sent from Britten to Randle. One read in part, "Having Nola has changed you for the worst."

He also shared links to a home on Dune Drive where Dinkins' body was discovered by detectives.

According to his testimony, searches made on Randle's phone included how to remove blood stains, boarding school for pre-schoolers and how to get away with murder. During testimony, he also showed receipts from Amazon purchased for gauze and Neosporin.

During Friday's hearing, the defense argued that the gauze and Neosporin can be used for a number of reasons and could have nothing to do with the toddler.

A child abuse expert also took the stand Friday and explained that child abuse is the presence of physical maltreatment, emotional maltreatment or neglect. She testified that child torture is the presence of all three. Given the evidence, she said she believed this is what Dinkins faced.

According to the expert's testimony, Dinkins lost more than seven pounds in just over a month, putting her at just 19 pounds when she died. The average weight for a 3-year-old girl is about 31 pounds, according to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

I didn't think it should take them very long on this case.
