Preliminary hearing for suspect in child’s kidnapping awaits outpatient review​

An Alleghany County woman charged with the abduction of a 2-year-old boy appeared in court Monday in Giles County.

Nancy Fridley appeared in person in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, which is where her case is being heard. She learned she’ll soon start receiving outpatient restoration services at the New River Regional Jail.

Since early May, Fridley has been held without bond at the jail.

During what was supposed to be a preliminary hearing, Giles County Commonwealth’s attorney Bobby Lilly read the results from an order for a mental evaluation that stated Fridley would begin treatment at the jail. This treatment must be complete before Fridley’s trial can happen.

A date for Fridley’s preliminary hearing cannot be set just yet. The court first has to wait for a review to come back for the outpatient services Fridley will receive, and a date for that has been set for October 25.

On Monday, a Giles County Juvenile and Domestic Relations judge determined Fridley’s competence had been restored following the 60 days worth of restoration services ordered by a judge during her last court appearance in August.

The judge then found Fridley competent to stand trial for the charges she faces from allegedly abducting a Giles County 2-year-old boy from a church back in May.

This decision comes from recommendation letters written by experts Fridley worked with during her restoration services.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday, December 16.

Bobby Lee Taylor was brought into an Alleghany County courtroom Tuesday to plead guilty to his part in the abduction earlier this year of a 2-year-old Giles County boy. But instead, a defense attorney said that Taylor now wants to take his charges to a trial.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Ann Gardner quickly said that she would want Taylor’s case to be heard by a jury, not just a judge, and noted, “Up until this moment, it was set for a plea.” Circuit Judge Ed Stein scheduled a jury trial for Jan. 20.

Suspect case in child’s kidnapping headed to a grand jury​

The case against a woman charged with kidnapping a toddler from a church is set to head to a grand jury. Nancy Fridley appeared in a Giles County courtroom Thursday morning for a preliminary hearing.

Five witnesses testified during the hearing, including the mother of the child. She told the court that after the abduction her son, at times, was like a “wild animal.”

“There was no peace about him,” she told the court.

Other witnesses included two nursery workers from the church, an FBI agent and a Virginia State Police trooper who helped take Fridley into custody.

The defense tried to file a motion to drop the child abuse and neglect charge, arguing the Commonwealth’s Attorney did not provide sufficient evidence to back the charge. The judge denied the motion.

The grand jury will take up the case on January 11.

Nancy Renee Fridley pleaded guilty Wednesday to last year’s abduction of a Giles County toddler from a church nursery during services, but will continue to battle charges that she tried to take children from two other places of worship.

At a hearing in Giles County Circuit Court, Fridley, 46, entered guilty pleas to charges of abduction and child abuse or neglect, both stemming from the May 2, 2021, disappearance of then-2-year-old Noah Gabriel Trout from the child care area of Riverview Baptist Church in the Ripplemead community.

But Fridley’s attorney, Ryan Hamrick of Christiansburg, said that she would not admit guilt to two attempted abduction charges connected to visits that Fridley is said to have made to New Valley Fellowship Church and Mountain View Ministries, both in Narrows and both also on May 2, 2021.

Judge Lee Harrell scheduled a bench trial for the two attempted abduction charges for July 26. After Fridley’s innocence or guilt has been decided on the attempted abduction counts, a date will be set for her sentencing for the overall case, attorneys said.

Fridley’s pleas on Wednesday came with no agreement about sentencing, Hamrick said.

A Clifton Forge man has pleaded guilty to kidnapping a 2-year-old boy from a church back in 2021.

Bobby Lee Taylor was arrested on May 3, 2021, for his alleged involvement in the abduction of the Giles County boy from Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead. On June 28, he pleaded guilty to the following charges in relation to the incident:

  • Abduction by force/intimidation
  • Possession of Schedule I or II drugs
This update comes after Taylor’s girlfriend, Nancy Fridly, who was also arrested and charged after the young boy disappeared, pleaded guilty to abducting the toddler on July 6.

Taylor is due back in court on Oct. 11, while Fridley is set to face trial for the previously mentioned charges on July 26.
