‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Actually, in high publicized crime cases, they will go up and try to knock on the door and see if anybody’s there to interview. And they do much worse, as @Guess Who could probably confirm.

Law-enforcement doesn’t always clean up after a crime, as a rule. There’s actually companies that clean up crime scenes.
LE does not clean up after themselves and the can leave a huge mess. Most of the time, the homeowner is left to figure it out themselves and usually to clean it up themselves.

In that last video, Entin said when he was there a police helicopter was flying very low with the guys in it leaning out of it. I just saw an interesting comment in chat that maybe they had her phone or watch and were seeing if she was in the area if it would connect.

Does anyone know if a person dies does their pacemaker stop or does it keep going? I imagine it would keep going no?

I keep looking up pacemaker information and it appears there might be different kinds! I'm confused.

I have no idea the source of this info (below) or if it's accurate. Sounds like speculation, to me.
And yes, some pacemakers can "shock" the heart. It's not a big shock like you'd see with a defibrillator, just low level electrical impulses to keep it at a normal rate and rhythm. That's...kind of the point of a pacemaker.
There are many different kinds. Too much speculation around what hers is or isn't doing is pretty pointless, IMO, without knowing more specifics about the device itself.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother Nancy Guthrie is “still alive.”

“We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is here,” Nanos said in a new interview with NBC’s Liz Kreutz. “She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her.”

Nanos probably has reason to believe she’s alive because her pacemaker is still sending data to her doctor’s office.

Nanos previously said her pacemaker disconnected from her Apple Watch around 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Pacemakers are devices implanted under the skin that sends electrical impulses to the heart to maintain a regular heart rhythm.

The pacemaker communicates remotely with the doctor’s office to help the staff monitor the patient’s heart. The pacemaker can also indicate that a patient has died.

This is exactly what I was trying to figure out! Yes, the person I knew's pacemaker did keep the heart active until EMT arrived, so I knew that they could function that way somehow. I was hoping to hear she could still be very much alive!

An implanted ICD will knock you to the ground.

i think this is the same info but there does see to be a bit more narrative at the end. That addresses the info that Nancy's son in law is a susoect.6l

Sheriff Nanos said in a press conference on Tuesday that authorities are working “hundreds of leads” in the case, but no suspect has been identified.

Investigative reporter Ashleigh Banfield said Nancy’s son-in-law Tommasso Cioni was a suspect. Tomasso is married to Nancy’s eldest daughter, Annie Guthrie.
The FBI served a search warrant at Annie’s Tucson home on Tuesday.
Banfield said “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie was in Annie’s home during the 2-hour search. Savannah is reportedly staying with Annie and her husband.
Law enforcement officials, including FBI agents and local sheriffs, were seen leaving Annie’s home with evidence bags.
Officials didn’t comment on what they found, but Banfield quoted an unidentified police source who said two surveillance cameras were found smashed inside Annie Guthrie’s home.

Yeah it's the same link. I just didn't copy over the whole entire article.
I don't really trust their information, IMO. They expounded on one statement and made a lot of assumptions. Taking the "she's alive" comment and deciding that means that her pacemaker is still transmitting data. That was not confirmed anywhere.

Savannah Guthrie Speaks Out on Missing Mom: 'Bring Her Home'

Authorities are urgently asking the public for help with any tips related to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie. As the search continues, investigators believe Guthrie was “taken from the home against her will” which could include “possible kidnapping or abduction.” Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County sheriff’s department at 520-351-4900. NBC’s Liz Kreutz reports and Tom Winter joins TODAY with analysis.

Well I thought it appeared to be important info to include, due to it stating a 2 hr search had been done and two smashed cameras had been found. Plus evidence bags were seen being carried out. Hopefully there will be confirmation too from another source at some point.

This article is repeating Ashleigh's claim that he is a suspect when the sheriff said there are no suspects. I personally think Banfield should stop telling things that seem to be leaks.

So is this person saying a pacemaker can report without being connected or does it have a way of doing so no matter where she is?

It seems it would be a wild guess if they don't know what type she has but who knows.

There are a couple of things in here that are more clear than what I'd heard so I'm guessing there must be another show out with some of it. Or I missed something in the other video like smashed cameras were found at the daughter's home. Not sure why anyone would take them with them and not get rid of them and why they'd have them in the home with both Savannah and his wife there...

The sheriff never said it was still reporting did he? Didn't sound like it.

I'm more worried about what meds she needs. Kind of wondering if she's diabetic. Or if her blood pressure is sky high without being medicated.
I don't think so. I thought I posted that she had high blood pressure, the pacemaker and some cardiac problems. This was in a recording between dispatch and someone, I heard it on Police Off the Cuff, it's legit.

I believe I did hear she needs at least the blood pressure meds and such was left behind. Not sure about any others. I don't believe she is diabetic.

I think she may have quoted Ashleigh right but I think the author was really reaching about the pacemaker comment and that it was still reporting and not sure I believe that and a few things. The other things about the search and such are maybe true though. If so Ashleigh must have another video out as I didn't hear some of these details before.

I dislike it when she, just like people in Reiner, just keeps saying from a source constantly. Her source should be losing their job in law enforcement.

I don't think I'd heard before either that Savanna is staying with her sister and BIL.
