‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

what is everyone else thinking in this as far as theories? i'm pretty torn and not sure at all. i really lean towards it was someone she knew but then taking her... just not sure.

we've seen kidnappings where some daughter and the bf try to play the daughter off as kidnapped to get money from her parents... this though is an elderly lady with no young children.

meaning where it is a kidnapping but was a family member involved. doesn't seem to fit that.

not sure.

Sheriff says they’re ‘aware’ of reported ‘ransom note’ related to Nancy Guthrie

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday that it is “aware of reports” regarding “possible ransom note(s)” related to Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie.

“We are taking all tips and leads very seriously,” the social media post read. “Anything that comes in, goes directly to our detectives who are coordinating with the FBI.”

No additional details were provided.

The post appeared to be in response to a report from TMZ, which said early Tuesday evening that it had received an alleged, unverified ransom note demanding millions in Bitcoin in exchange for the release of Nancy Guthrie. The outlet reported that the alleged note had been sent to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Nanos declined to say whether Guthrie was the victim of a random or targeted abduction, or whether a ransom demand had been made.

While Nanos said investigators processed Guthrie’s home — which has since been turned back over to the family — like any other, looking for “blood, DNA, any kind of physical evidence, fingerprints, anything,” he declined to answer questions about whether blood was found.

Multiple outlets, including the Los Angeles Times and CBS News, reported on Tuesday that blood was found at the residence, citing law enforcement sources.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, in an email to Nexstar before the press conference, said DNA samples had been collected at the scene, but would not confirm the presence of blood evidence. Nanos said Tuesday that evidence had been submitted to labs.

“We’re like you, we’re waiting for those returns to come back,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

Investigators are also working with camera companies to review footage, though Nanos said they did not have any surveillance footage.

Meanwhile, the FBI is reviewing cellphone data and cell tower information, according to Jon Edwards, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Tucson office.

Well in the presser I just saw, he said some DNA samples had come back but led nowhere. yet last night he said rapid DNA takes 5 to 10 days. So kind of talking out of both sides of his mouth...

From what I heard TMZ used this email that could very well be crap and not related, just some prank, to make news before ever giving it to LE. They're such a rag.

Lots of reports of blood or hints of such. Now Entin's thing.

The sheriff has talked big about his team but apparently people are leaking and yet he keeps denying blood and more or at least not confirming and someone too let Entin get close enough to the home. Family? Him just trespassing? That's not a short nothing driveway. Leaks?

I've seen in the past that they have said it can take "up to" five days. But, sometimes the results come out quicker. Might be that the samples are strong, I don't know.

And it wasn't all the samples, just some had come back and lit on no one.

He doesn't answer anything and then says something like that, after saying it would take how long. I liked him last night but today not liking him so much.

When authorities were initially called to Nancy Guthrie’s desert home a few miles north of Tucson on Sunday, they immediately found what officials described as suspicious and concerning circumstances.
There was no sign of Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, but essentials she would travel with remained: her cellphone, wallet, car and medication. Although the 84-year-old is of sound mind, she has physical ailments that keep her from walking very far — suggesting she didn’t leave on her own.
According to law enforcement sources not authorized to speak about the case publicly, there was blood at the scene and someone appeared to have forced their way inside. A security camera frame at her front door was empty, though it was unclear for how long.
Now, three days into the search for her and her possible abductors, the mystery has only deepened.
Authorities on Tuesday said they couldn’t rule out that she was kidnapped for ransom. About an hour later, TMZ reported that it had received an alleged ransom note demanding millions in cryptocurrency for Guthrie’s release. The outlet did not report when or how it received the note, nor did it reveal the entirety of its contents, but did say the note had been turned over to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which is leading the investigation.
Sheriff Chris Nanos said the department was aware of “reports circulating about possible ransom note(s)” in the Guthrie case but did not verify the TMZ report.
“We do believe Nancy was taken from her home against her will,” Nanos said at a news conference Tuesday.
FBI Director Kash Patel, speaking on Fox News on Tuesday, was asked by the anchor if he was aware that TMZ.com had received an alleged ransom note.
“The local authorities notified the FBI of it,” Patel said, “and we are working with them in any way they choose. But remember they’re the lead right now and we have to respect that, but we are there to help them anywhere we can on ransom notes or otherwise.”
Nancy Guthrie, who lived alone in a ranch-style home in the Catalina Foothills community, was last seen Saturday night when family dropped her off at her residence, and local authorities say she may have been forcibly taken in the middle of the night.
Family members went to check on her at her home after they were alerted that she didn’t show up for church services Sunday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Officials have not theorized about why she may have been snatched, but Nanos appealed directly to any potential abductor while speaking with the media the day after she was reported missing.
“Just call us. Let her go. Just call us. The family will tell you, there’s no questions asked here,” he told NBC News.
Adam Bercovici, a former lieutenant with the Los Angeles Police Department who worked on numerous kidnappings and abductions, said he expected that investigators were working to verify any possible ransom letter, but he worries that if a note is found to be legitimate, local investigators are already at a disadvantage. He said it’s ideal not to let an abductor know that law enforcement is involved, because of the publicity.
“Kidnapping 101 is don’t let the crooks know the police are on to them,” Bercovici said. “It compromises the effectiveness of the investigation and any possible rescue.”
Still, detectives will continue to work the case, Bercovici said, trying to verify the legitimacy of any ransom letter by confirming specific information from the crime scene with the person or people making the demands.
At Tuesday’s news conference, officials continued to plead for information that might help lead to Nancy Guthrie.
“Every lead and tip is important; we are aggressively pursuing and looking into every single one,” said John Edwards, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI office in Tucson, which is assisting with the ongoing investigation. “Again, please help us bring Nancy Guthrie home.”
Since Guthrie disappeared, investigators have completed searching and processing her home for evidence and reopened the property to her family, officials said. They did not provide details on what was found inside.
Nanos declined to answer many questions about the case Tuesday but did confirm that there was an empty frame for a security camera near Guthrie’s front door. He said investigators did not know if it was taken during her disappearance but said they were looking into it.

‘Today’ host Savannah Guthrie’s mom possibly kidnapped in middle of night, authorities say

Feb. 2, 2026
The sheriff said investigators did not know what Guthrie was wearing when she disappeared and did not speculate on how many people could have been involved in taking her.
“We have a lot of work in front of us,” Nanos said. “We have someone’s life in jeopardy.”
A tip line was set up Monday evening, and the Sheriff’s Department is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for images, information or videos that lead to the arrest of the person or people involved in her disappearance.
“We don’t need another bad, tragic ending,” Nanos said. “We need some help.”
Adding to the urgency of the case, Nanos said Nancy Guthrie’s life was in immediate danger if she did not take medication every day. Although Guthrie has some health issues, Nanos has repeatedly said that she does not have any cognitive issues.
“We’re doing all we can to try to locate her,” Nanos said. “Every tool we have, we will use.”
On Monday evening, Savannah Guthrie shared a statement on Instagram asking people to pray for her mother’s safe return home.
“Thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant,” she wrote. “Raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment.”
Nancy Guthrie has joined her daughter on the “Today” show several times, with clips showing the mother-daughter duo beaming with shared pride. She was described as devoutly religious, an avid reader and a dedicated mom and grandmother.
“Today” hosts shared a statement from Savannah Guthrie that thanked viewers for their “thoughts, prayers and messages of support.”
“Right now our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” the longtime “Today” personality and journalist wrote on behalf of her family. She encouraged anyone with information about her mother’s location to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Ok this article appears to say that they knew about the ransom note Monday but LE wanted it kept back from the news but TMZ got hold of the info and released it.

CBS article now reporting on it. I hope this hasn't harmed Nancy Guthrie's safety.

A ransom note was sent to a local Arizona news station following the disappearance of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, the Pima County sheriff told CBS News.
The note, which the station received Monday and agreed not to report on, contained specific details about the home and what Nancy Guthrie was wearing that night, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said, although he would not confirm the accuracy of that information or the legitimacy of the note.
"It's like any piece of evidence," Nanos told CBS News. "You give it to us, you give us a lead, we're going to look at every aspect of that lead."
Nanos did not specify which station the note was sent to, but CBS affiliate KOLD-TV reported Tuesday it had received an email that "appears to be one of the alleged ransom notes," which it forwarded to the sheriff's office.

Investigators have analyzed the note and are taking it seriously, Nanos said.
He said the FBI reviewed the note and made the decision to share it with Savannah Guthrie. Authorities had hoped to keep the information from becoming public, but the note was obtained by TMZ, which reported on it before contacting the sheriff's office, Nanos said.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department had earlier said on social media it was aware of "reports circulating about possible ransom note(s)," adding, "Anything that comes in, goes directly to our detectives who are coordinating with the FBI."

Surveillance video from a home security system has yielded nothing so far, Nanos told CBS News. He said investigators believe the system may have been set to automatically delete footage after a short period of time, and they are now attempting to recover it through forensic means.
Nanos previously told CBS News that investigators believe the 84-year-old was abducted from her home in the middle of the night over the weekend, and he described it as "a crime scene." Authorities have been searching for her since Sunday.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home Saturday night, but no one knew she was missing until she didn't show up for church the next morning, Nanos said.
The sheriff has repeatedly said Guthrie, who lives alone, could not have wandered away from her home because she has no cognitive issues and very limited mobility.
He also expressed concern that she needs access medication that she must take daily, telling CBS News, "The clock is literally ticking."
"You've placed her in great jeopardy without giving her meds that are critical to her," Nanos said. "Again, like I've said, could be fatal if she doesn't get those meds."
The sheriff has said it's unclear how many people may have been involved in the apparent abduction.
"It could be one, it could've been more, I don't know," he said.
A little bit of blood was found inside Nancy Guthrie's Tucson home, a law enforcement source familiar with the case told CBS News, and what appeared to be a small amount of dried blood was seen next to a doormat outside the front door of the home on Tuesday.

Anna Schecter, Alex Sundby and Pat Milton contributed to this report.

Gotta just love TMZ. Not. They are disgusting.

From above.

Sheriff believes Savannah Guthrie's missing mother was abducted while she slept.
Yep says outright here that TMZ reported before contacting the sheriff's department, just as I heard and said. They are disgusting and may well have ruined chances or endangered her if there is any legitimacy to it.

I don't think I've ever used the word but they are abhorrent!

They try to help Jackson and Nick Reiner but whoring for news and now they perhaps endangered this woman. Even if they didn't, they very well COULD HAVE and did not care.

They should be abolished, dismantled, prosecuted.

I heard earlier that 3 stations now had received the letter supposedly or a similar one. I did not hear all of it nor had the link, so did not share it. I was in and out of a show and then got away from it.

I'm not liking Brian Entin much lately either. I had moments of such views of him a few years back, then he got a lot better it seemed but lately not a real fan again. He rushed to share online the ID victims autopsy photos for one and now I'd like to know how he got the photos near the door of this residence. News is one thing but news at all costs and jeopardizing victims is another!

Okay. Sometimes I get when I need to take a break and this is one of them. Ashleigh irritates me a fair bit at times and last night she was, and Entin is too, who she mentioned in the first minutes. As is TMZ. They are such obvious vultures at times, it is just sickening. I was back to liking her a bit, and Entin but lately showing their true colors again.

I need to go back to Netflix because I'm irritated by her already five minutes in. I'd like to hear the "click bait" part but think I already may have heard about this--is this the ex?

Anyhow, I guess I won't find out tonight. Or more aptly this morning. I care about crime, I like information, but I don't like what some of them do or are doing at times.

The sheriff was nice enough to grant her a solo interview and I stuck with that one because he really did share a bit here and there but she just egged and pushed. And today he was far less forthcoming and defensive. Can't say as I blame him.

She's also in her rapid fire speech. It's too bad as I have liked her a bit better of late at times when home doing her own channel, she's "trying" to relate but she can't quite swing it.

Anyhow, it's just me. I get to this point sometimes. I've just had enough of some of them and maybe winter too. Will take a look tomorrow (later today). Going back to some lightness on Netflix.

So what was the purpose of her abduction? I don't get it at present unless it is a ransom situation or she died/was killed when they broke in and robbed her?
However the link above indicates she was alive as it says this :-

"Guthrie’s pacemaker stopped syncing with her Apple devices at around 2 a.m. on Sunday — which is when investigators suspect she was taken from her home against her will."

I don't see that someone close would need to do this crime at 2 a.m. either.

Post 69 states her phone, wallet and car were left at home and post 70 says her Apple watch was also left at home and the ring doorbell was pulled off.

I only hope that they have some vehicle tracking information in the area at that time.

The cops are keeping everything tight vested, as it should be. Watch the video below and a lot will be answered.

A lot of what I learned is very interesting.

The son in law better be involved. If they are publicly naming him, and he has nothing to do with this they are ruining his life.

It sounds like a reporter found a blood trail the cops missed. HUH?

That is so weird. Granted, the cops are inexperienced in this kind of thing, but really?

This crime is amateur for the kidnappers. They left a lot of clues behind, it seems. One being knowledge of the cameras.

I'm sure we'll find out a lot more. The cops referred to it as a kidnapping, rather than an abduction. I find that interesting.

Savannah may have received a ransom request, that has been kept under wraps. It would make sense. She's the wealthiest family member, it would seem.

It will be very interesting to find out all the facts, eventually.

So its funny but I was just thinking yesterday of the ex son-in-law because of the Tepe murders. And was wondering. Need to get up to date.

Some things are beginning to make sense.

I don't know why you think the cops missed that blood. They don't clean up crime scenes. Also, the sheriff said there were disturbing things found inside and out and I assume some of those things include blood.

Reporters imo are endangering this woman. TMZ reported on the ransom note BEFORE they ever gave it to police just for starters. Ashleigh says she is friends with Savannah but is just salivating with the details. Who let Entin on the property or was he trespassing??

Who does the video you posted? Haven't looked, not sure I want to.
