‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

So its funny but I was just thinking yesterday of the ex son-in-law because of the Tepe murders. And was wondering. Need to get up to date.

Some things are beginning to make sense.
So it is the ex son in law?? Meaning Savannah's ex? I'd heard him mentioned before but for the life of me, I can't recall where I heard that. Maybe I saw someone say it in comments somewhere or something.

I guess I am going to have to watch these things. Not sure I can take more of some of these "reporters".

The cops are keeping everything tight vested, as it should be. Watch the video below and a lot will be answered.

A lot of what I learned is very interesting.

The son in law better be involved. If they are publicly naming him, and he has nothing to do with this they are ruining his life.

It sounds like a reporter found a blood trail the cops missed. HUH?

That is so weird. Granted, the cops are inexperienced in this kind of thing, but really?

This crime is amateur for the kidnappers. They left a lot of clues behind, it seems. One being knowledge of the cameras.

I'm sure we'll find out a lot more. The cops referred to it as a kidnapping, rather than an abduction. I find that interesting.

Savannah may have received a ransom request, that has been kept under wraps. It would make sense. She's the wealthiest family member, it would seem.

It will be very interesting to find out all the facts, eventually.
The sheriff also is getting picked on for his wording like abduction, kidnapping. He explained that, saying he isn't used to his words being taken wrong and a big deal being made of such, also he said her being taken fits both of those things and it does. No?

So watching that one with Ashleigh and she says her LE source doesn't think the TMZ note is "real". I so dislike it when they constantly say "source" and they can't be named. Clearly there are leaks in this dept. if true.

I can tolerate her a bit better this morning. I still don't like what she's doing with this one though. She does point out them looking at family is natural and it doesn't mean they are guilty, yada, yada.

I guess if the news notes are fakes/pranks, then there still could be a real ransom demand. As far as I'm concerned, TMZ is so bad they could have had someone send them a note just so they could report on it. I couldn't think any lower of them than I already do, let me tell ya but then they do sink even lower.

So if there's blood, someone did injure this woman. Before they took her. Knife, gun?

She mentions someone could benefit if she's dead from even a life insurance policy. True. You'd think though they'd leave her so it was known she was dead right away so they could collect quickly so I think that's kind of a dumb thought maybe by Banfield.

Why would you injure someone and then take them?

I wonder if they've checked hospitals in a very wide radius... Just a random thought. Would you take her to take care of her otherwise? And so she can't "tell"? Doubtful but that stupid thought just crossed my mind... Also trying to think of scenarios where hopefully she'd be alive still...

Oh so that's how Entin covers his trespassing. Says they decided to just go knock on the door when the crime scene was turned over. Uh-huh.

Sure. They know that won't result in any charges worth bothering with so they do it.

Like talking to someone was their only purpose. No one answered, no surprise right... But he got to see the blood, camera missing, door open, etc.

🔥 WOW.. @TVAshleigh just reported that law enforcement has just seized Savannah's sister, Annie Guthrie's vehicle. She claims that her source tells her that Annie's husband, Tommaso Cioni is rumored to be a suspect in #NancyGuthrie disappearance.

We saw earlier that the FBI had visited Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni's residence about ten minutes away from Nancy Guthrie's home. Annie and Tommaso were reportedly the last people to see Nancy alive and dropped her off at her home between 9:30 and 9:45 pm on 1/31.

Ashleigh reports that Nancy's multiple Nest cameras were deliberately smashed and that the forced entry was through the back door which was left wide open. This could explain why they were being so cagey about the cameras earlier today.

It would also align with the Sheriff's statements that he felt this was targeted and that there was no threat to the public. Hopefully we will hear more soon from Sheriff Nanos.

Despite this extremely dark turn, still praying for a miracle that Nancy is ok 🙏🏽

I just read that, too.

Wondering if that blood trail belongs to the perp?

Yeah the video above of Ashleigh says the car was taken and that the sister's husband is said to be the main suspect per her LE "source". Entin is also on her show and mentions that the FBI was at their home too.

sheriff said he wouldn't be doing another press conference until thursday. Kind of odd I thought to say that but maybe he just did to say he isn't talking again until then. I thought maybe it was because he figured they'd know more or have this wrapped up by then, hard to say. Unless of course something happens before then I think he said.

Supposedly the last person/people she was with was the sister and possibly the son-in-law. Why if they were going to take her would first take her home, she was already in the car...? Or did the sister bring her home and the hub went back but in the sister's car?

Are they sure it IS the sister's car, or is it "theirs" or "his"? They keep saying the sister's car but who knows if they even know if it was the car that dropped her off, took her, etc.? I mean the reporters. of course the cops probably know.

Actually, in high publicized crime cases, they will go up and try to knock on the door and see if anybody’s there to interview. And they do much worse, as @Guess Who could probably confirm.

Law-enforcement doesn’t always clean up after a crime, as a rule. There’s actually companies that clean up crime scenes.

I don't know why you think the cops missed that blood. They don't clean up crime scenes. Also, the sheriff said there were disturbing things found inside and out and I assume some of those things include blood.

Reporters imo are endangering this woman. TMZ reported on the ransom note BEFORE they ever gave it to police just for starters. Ashleigh says she is friends with Savannah but is just salivating with the details. Who let Entin on the property or was he trespassing??

Who does the video you posted? Haven't looked, not sure I want to.

I didn't post the video, @Kimster did. It's Ashleigh Banfield.

I'm well aware there are companies that clean up crime scenes. I worked in a job where that came up quite a bit and boy do I have a story about that but I'll save it for some other time.

Yeah, I get the going up and knocking on the door. It also seems like they use it as a way though to see the scene or he did in this case. Not a fan.

I remember when Dog was getting involved in some late in the game, was it in Petito, he shows up out of the blue and walks up and knocks on the door of the Laundries I think it was? In that case imo just to get a lot of attn on himself. He did that a few times around that time. I THINK that was the case.

I'm just not a fan of some of what is going on here with some of these reporters, TMZ being the worst.

Yeah, I've heard some of that from Guessy in years past.

In this one, I'm concerned some of what is going on is risking the victim and risking the investigation.

I go back and forth on certain reporters at times. I can tell you these days I'm liking Angenette Levy a lot better than Ashleigh, in any case. I've had moments about her though too but they are also a product of who they work for. Angenette handled the Kohberger new stuff well I thought, Entin absolutely did not.

Anywho... I DO want news on cases but not at the expense of a victim's safety. Or naming someone a suspect who has not been officially named one, just saying your well placed "source" told you.

I can't say I'm surprised. I think reporters are borderline interfering in this and they basically have called the SIL a suspect which is really irresponsible. Ashleigh blasted it. While Entin may have used the excuse of knocking on the door, they still took photos or video on the property and I think that's going a bit too far too. TMZ was beyond bad and could have endangered her.

I bet you'll never see Ashleigh get another interview with the sheriff. I think he's upset about all of this and I can't say as I blame him.

Ashleigh was telling Entin and Entin said he knew about the car. I'm not sure just where they got the info. He is on scene so maybe he saw it taken? It was also reported the FBI were at their house, not hers but theirs and he knew that, so now they both know, but really unsure where it all came from.

Ashleigh claims she has an LE source, I think she said high up, I'm actually wondering if it isn't someone with the FBI rather than local but who knows. I believe she also said he told her the SIL is a suspect but don't quote me on that. I'm not rewatching that show but that's how I recall it.
