‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime​

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.


On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Oh and the only other thing I caught before the show ended is there is a $2,500 reward in this case. He said not to judge by the amount. I did't see the whole show so not sure what he meant other than that is pretty low.

so devices plural. we know one was a watch. I didn't think she'd take it off but IF she had another device in the home that kept track of her pacemaker, she maybe only wore the watch when out and about. I was thinking the perp may have made sure it was left behind, and taken off, which is possible as well.

Yeah, there was some case, darn if I recall which one this applied to and I just recall that the dr. or team never saw it or did anything about it until days later. they don't alert LE I didn't think. Yeah it does not necessarily mean her heart stopped or had an abnormal rhythm. It "stopped syncing". If she was taken from her home and became separated from her Apple devices (phone and watch), the distance alone would make them stop syncing.

Allegedly her daughters salary is over $10 million pa so i am suspecting this is a ransom situation and it is being kept out of the news for now IMO. The reward is real low too.

I am hoping this gets resolved but for now i think i will give it 24 hours.

I'd agree with that, they just monitor and report. They wouldn't have such controlling the pacemaker imo.

It is only helpful because it gives a time and the question is also if she normally took off the watch at home. I imagine she used it when out.

Question though, the pacemaker wouldn't sync would it to the devices of others? Probably not. Just thinking of ways to find her. I'd guess not as they can't just having it do that.

Well if so, good chance that she's alive. I figured her salary was in the million range but ten, wow, that's a fair bit. Annually right?

Well they have to have known she was her daughter, where she lived and have a way of contacting someone and I'd hope they wouldn't pick TMZ.

And they almost always get caught when the money is dropped/exchanged OR if tracers are put on the bills.

She was taken for SOME reason. That's the odd part of this. If she'd just been found dead in her home, still awful, but it wouldn't be as unusual.

It's not like they kidnapped Savannah either. It would be trying to get to her through her mom. We also don't know how many other siblings there are or what they do. Has anyone heard? They do refer to family members plural.

It's odd that if they think she was taken and truly want the public's help, there's not a hint of what she was wearing, what kind of car, description of abductor, just nothing.

Yesterday, Ashleigh asked him if they couldn't put out more pictures of the mom and he said yeah, they didn't have a lot and he'd ask the family for more or something like that.

He is clearly not liking the press attn at this point and is having, as all do, his words misconstrued as he tries to explain that he is not used to such.

When they give absolutely no info of what to look or watch for, either they already know and are not risking that info and are just pacifying the public like hey did recently in Tepe...

HOPEFULLY they know a lot more. He's acting here like they don't know much of anything...

It's hard sometimes to remember it, but one should look at what they don't or won't say. He was just asked about any signs of robbery or bank cards being used. Just for one example. He's not answering that and avoids the question. I'm not saying that's what it is here but when they answer some but won't answer others, there is often a reason... For those particular questions.

Okay, "dropped" off at 9:30, I think I heard a bit later than that initially, and found missing at 11 a.m. the next day. He won't admit pacemaker time says anything basically, they are leaving the window of time open.

He clearly has changed his tune as to wanting to talk to press. Even Ashleigh last night wouldn't stop drilling him and man she thinks she and Savannah think like cops and know as much.

I doubt the man has had much sleep either.

Honestly though, sheriffs are largely in administrative roles. Believe me when I say they often don't know what is going on out in the field or what investigators are finding. Right now he may get frequent reports due to the interest but it isn't their primary function, to satisfy the public.

He probably does know some things now but boy it is sure seeming like they don't. When cases settle a bit, they get briefed unless some major emergency, weekly on cases generally.

I'm not done with it yet but it seems like a big nothing burger so far. It's probably the same one that was in the article earlier here. Not sure. Tried to go back to that one and couldn't get into it. Then came across this.

The only thing that stood out to me so far is how he avoided the bank card and robbery questions. However', he pretty much is not answering or giving info to anything. So first he was so willing, now he feels misquoted and such and now is making it seem like they have absolutely nothing which isn't a good look either. Jmo.

Again he says at 9;30, 9:45 she was dropped off by a family member. That one article I think was far from accurate. It said a friend, it said door wide open, it said a few unconfirmed things. Nothing about a church event the night before either. Just that didn't show up for church the next day. Family notified by a church member. Just as I heard initially.

Clearly there are things already wrong being put out as often happens. Or someone is leaking but how do you mix up a family member and a friend? Of course you can be both but I'm friends with my sisters and mom, etc. but in a case would be described as a family member. Of course.

And still I've heard not a single thing confirming big things were moved in the home so I'm going with that's false or unconfirmed as well.
