COLUMBIA, S.C. — The family of a Midlands woman is pleading for answers after she went missing from her Aiken County home weeks ago. Krystal Anderson, a Columbia native, disappeared on August. 20.

The search has been an emotional one, her sister Shadira Smothers said, as the investigation stretches beyond its second week.

We told you on Thursday night, Newberry County investigators had a warrant out for Darius Berry, for accessory after the fact to felony arson.

They were waiting on him to turn himself in, and we learned Friday that he did.

He was granted a $20,000 surety bond at a hearing Friday, which he made. The only conditions he has to follow are to show up at every required court appearance, according to officials.

Trying to refresh memory on this one. He's an accessory after the fact isn't he? He was probably likely to get bond of some amount but it does seem low (unless you're in WI). Also does the son KNOW where her body is?? And he most certainly could have given him some real conditions of bond I'm sure and he did not. And he's due to have his first child and cannot afford an ankle monitor. I feel sorry for that child. A criminal for a dad and one with apparently no money to raise the child. Are we supposed to be sympatheitic? Apparently it was said to garner sympathy from the judge. He isn't he one pregnant. And the missing woman has four children now without a mother.

Well, it is SC, the same state that let the Murdaughs abuse their power in the state for a century. SC leadership has enough egg on their face from that one alone.

I guess not. I mean he has his first child on the way. He hasn't even delivered yet but probably needs prenatal care. SARCASM.

In all seriousness though, the judge may be limited by the stupid laws on what he could do for holding him or setting bond. I don't know enough about the parameters of SC law or that of most states for that matter. Bond sure varies by state. Ours is known for mostly all signature bonds with never a cash bond in the norrthern part of the state. It's disgusting. Also known to be an overall low bond state. Some huge well known cases are the only ones generally that differ on that.

I honestly don't know what's going on here but just skimming it all this morning to refresh a bit, they never seemed to take her disappearnce too seriously in the beginning. Seems like searches were maybe nonexistent and they are just talking of them now?? Then it sounds like local news continuing to question actually resulted in an arrest of the first one or it wouldn't have even ever happened? Now the second one released WHO they let turn himself in and it sounds like waited for it instead of going to get him.

It does sound like this "accessory" the son may be cooperating and trying to help. But her body hasn't been found. Is he saying he doesn't know where she is?

It’s now been two years since an Aiken County mom Krystal Anderson went missing outside her home.

Her boyfriend, Tony Berry, is charged with her murder.

They found his burned car in a wooded area, but her remains were never found.

On Tuesday, Anderson’s family held a vigil to remember her in Columbia.

Investigators say they are still working on every lead in this case, and they aren’t giving up until they find Anderson’s body.

Shadira Smothers says August 20, 2022, will always be etched in her memory.

“That day is the day that changed my whole life. So, I can never forget that exact date,” she said.

“I never thought that I would be here two years later. I never thought that this would be the last time,” said Smothers.

Now, Anderson’s family is celebrating her life with balloons and candles.

Smothers says time isn’t helping.

“It doesn’t get easier, it gets harder, because the more and more time that goes on, you lose that faith. And that’s the hardest thing is trying to keep having faith,” said Smothers.

Private Investigator Chandra Cleveland says it isn’t unusual for a case to stall like this.

“Law enforcement cannot give you play-by-play of their investigation. So, you’re in the waiting. I know it hurts families, but sometimes it can help to have someone. If you don’t have a private investigator, you can do something, and that is, listen and put your word out in your community,” said Cleveland.

She says the best advice is to let law enforcement do their job.

Even with a suspect behind bars, the case is not over.

“As a family, you want to try and solve the crime on your own, but please don’t, because if you tamper with evidence, someone will get away with murder,” said Cleveland.

A sad but meaningful night unfolded Friday as the family and friends of 30-year-old Krystal Anderson gathered to honor her memory and keep her name alive.

Purple balloons were released in her honor, followed by heartfelt prayers.

Prayers for answers and strength echoed through the night, as many still wonder what happened to the missing mother of four.

"Tonight, we gather on the third somber year without Krystal. Three long years without her smile, her light, her life," said her godmother Chrystal Favor-Rice.

Her sister, Shadira Smothers said while the family is always happy to gather and see each other the circumstances are a painful reminder.

"If you know anything, please, I'm begging on behalf of her children," pleaded Smothers.

Anderson was last seen at her home on August 20th, 2022. She was reported missing three days later. Authorities arrested her boyfriend, Tony Berry, and charged him with kidnapping and murder. But Krystal still hasn’t been found.

Her family says they’ve tried to stay in contact with investigators but have received few answers.

"I know they say life is not fair, but it's really unfair to a family that's in the dark and is grieving over a loved one," said Smothers.

Smothers also recalled being told two years ago on Mother's Day that DNA had been found in the trunk of Berry's car. It was reportedly being tested, but the family says they still don’t know if it matched Krystal.

Currently, her children are living in separate homes with different family members.

"I think the hardest thing for them is being separated. They do FaceTime each other a lot during the week, and they are able to talk to each other," Smothers said. "I can say for the youngest one I have, who's six, it's hard for her because she went from being raised with siblings to being raised like an only child," said Smothers.

Smothers says the family is still waiting to hear back from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and would like to conduct another search.

The Aiken County Solicitor’s Office confirmed that the remains found in Barnwell County Wednesday are believed to be those of Krystal Anderson.

The mother of four has been missing from Wagener since August 2022 and is presumed dead.

The remains have been sent for an autopsy and positive identification.

Nearly four years after a mother disappeared, Aiken County prosecutors believe her remains have been found.

Krystal Anderson, a mother of four, vanished in 2022, and authorities think she was killed by her boyfriend, Tony Berry, who’s charged with kidnapping and murder.

Law enforcement previously discovered Berry’s burned car in Newberry County, but they didn’t find Anderson’s body.

Acting on information they’d received, Aiken County deputies said Wednesday they found human remains buried off Highway 37 near Blackville.

And although the DNA testing isn’t complete, officials working the case and those close to Anderson think the remains are those of the missing mother.

“There were belongings found on those remains that were identical to Krystal’s belongings,” private investigator Chandra Cleveland, who has worked closely with Anderson’s family throughout the case, said.

Cleveland said while the discovery may bring answers, it also forces Anderson’s children to face a painful reality.

“It was devastating ... it’s just like the first day it happened when she went missing,” Cleveland shared. “Maybe now we can give her a final resting place, and her children will be able to deal with the fact that their mother is not coming back.”



Now, nearly four years after Anderson vanished, her family is waiting for final confirmation and hoping justice is finally within reach.

It hasn’t been an easy journey, but Cleveland says it didn’t have to take this long.

She has criticized how the early stages of the investigation were handled.

“I gave them a lot of information that could have had Mr. Berry arrested weeks after Krystal’s disappearance,” Cleveland said.
