FBI now involved in ongoing search for missing 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

I should know this but after all this time we just now are getting to her plea? I guess that's right, she dropped attorneys, represented herself, had attorneys put on again... I'd sure like to know what her defense is going to be... Eguardo? Her ex-husband? Some new made up fantastical story??

They just had to put her nasty face next to the face of that beautiful boy at the top of the article... :(

It sounds like she is going to plead she was in a mental state AFTER to explain probably her lies, actions, failure to come clean and try to explain that away...

That leads me to believe they then will have to most likely try to argue that this was not first degree murder... Or something on that order... Or an accident...? Hmm.

Or they have a better story now but it is that someone else did we haven't heard about it but Stauch couldn't tell the cops because of her mental state after and because of this and that.

All just guesses/speculation on my part...

Waitlist at state hospital in Pueblo could cause delay in Letecia Stauch’s murder trial

Letecia Stauch, the woman accused of killing her 11-year-old stepson Gannon Stauch, is expected to undergo a mental health evaluation surrounding her alleged actions after Gannon's death, but a backlog at the state hospital could cause a delay in the case.

Stauch appeared in court virtually on Thursday for a hearing about the mental health evaluation. Judge Gregory Werner asked why Stauch wasn't present in court, and she said that she hadn't received medication while in jail, and that's why she wasn't appearing. Judge Werner said he had been "pretty patient" with Stauch, and told her that she needs to file a motion seven days in advance before not appearing, or a deputy will bring her to the courtroom.

The prosecution is requesting that Stauch's mental health evaluation be completed at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo. However, during Thursday's hearing, Judge Werner said he received information that the CMHIP had 352-person waitlist as of two weeks ago, and he said he believes it has grown since then.

Judge Werner said it's not likely that the evaluation will be completed soon, and Stauch's next hearing was pushed to Jan. 13, though Werner acknowledged they may have to reschedule it again if Stauch is in Pueblo at the time.

Stauch's trial is set for March 28, but a written report from a completed mental health evaluation must be disclosed 63 days before the trial, which would put a deadline for the report in late January. Judge Werner said he's open to suggestions to move the process along faster, but 4th Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen said he doesn't believe there are any good solutions.

That's scary. A waitlist of any kind. But that many is alarming.

Scott's always good and very informative legally but some shows strike me more than others or some have cases I follow and some don't. Tonight, wow, this one just struck me really good. He is in high form with cutting remarks and humor. He covered, Stauch, touched on Vallow, covered Murdaugh and says this is going far bigger and it is a criminal enterprise they had going on. He said the bank in question has been there throughout since like 1903 or something and guaranteed the bank guy that got let go will likely need to flip on Murdaugh as banks were involved, lawyers, etc. in this money scheme. I AM paraphrasing.

He covered Durst and made no bones about what type of man he was (not a good one). Just a really good show!

Letecia apparently thinks she should not be required to be in court as it stresses her out. Oh well poor child. Maybe you shouldn't have murdered an innocent child!! I highly recommend watching this one for all of the cases. I probably missed a couple cases even he covered. And it's not all that long either. There is more info on the Stauch than what I mentioned as well.

How could any man look at that face and find love.

'Savor every moment that you have': Gannon Stauch's mother speaks 2 years after son's disappearance

Thursday marks two years since 11-year-old Gannon Stauch was reported missing by his stepmother, Letecia Stauch. Now, she is accused of his murder, along with a number of other charges.

Landen Hiott, Gannon's mother, said it does not feel like two years without her little boy.

“Today, I really want to be focusing attention on him, regardless of the evil being that is standing… that is going to be there… like, I don't even want to say her name, but I just want the focus to be totally on Gannon because he deserves this," Hiott said. "Maybe it's a coincidence that it's happening today. I don't know.”

Letecia Stauch had a motions hearing Thursday where the results of a mental health evaluation performed at the state hospital were expected to be discussed. However, in court it was revealed the state hospital cannot schedule her evaluation until February, and the court may not have a report on it until March 31. Judge Gregory Werner said that could be problematic, because it is after jury selection is scheduled to start.

Both sides approached the bench at that moment to discuss the timing of the mental health evaluation privately. The issue will be revisited at the pre-trial readiness conference on March 17.

How can this be and why wasn't this known before the hearing? And it is after jury selection is scheduled to start? And it won't be revisited until March 17th...

One can already see it coming. Is this trial going to go forward on time? Is the defense not going to raise cane if it does with this report being so late? If it does is this some type of appeal possibility later? I have no idea but again how is it this happens? Isn't this like her third eval anyhow?

Poor Landen. I'm sure all braced and ready for trial but at the last minute, will it proceed?

Letecia Stauch changes plea, asks to waive jury trial

During a hearing Friday afternoon, the defense for Letecia Stauch, who is charged with first-degree murder related to the 2020 death of her 11-year-old stepson Gannon Stauch, asked to change her plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.

Right after that, defense attorney Josh Tolini said they have an expert from out of state who recently agreed to assist and said that the expert believes there is a high likelihood of "psychosis."

He said they did not bring this up with the intent to delay the case, but said it was Stauch's best defense.

Prosecutors did not challenge the request but noted the decision not to challenge does mean they believe the claim.

Under Colorado law, the not guilty by reason of insanity plea must be entered at the time of arraignment but could be changed later if there is "good cause," Judge Gregory Werner explained.

He ultimately ruled to allow the change of plea which resets the date for a "speedy trial" to occur. However, that timeline won't start until after the court receives the initial evaluation, Werner said.

Werner told Stauch as a result of the new plea, she could be given a polygraph during the evaluation and said any confession she makes will be admissible in court. He also explained that by pleading not guilty by reason of insanity she's waiving any confidentially of previous mental health records.

However, the defense filed a motion asking to waive a jury trial citing concerns over the massive amount of pre-trial publicity and the ability to find a fair jury pool.
The prosecution said they're not consenting to that at this time. District Attorney Michael Allen said he wanted to see the results of the evaluation first and said the motion was "premature."

Werner said he would not make a decision Friday and said he may not be able to rule on that until they get to jury selection.

Stauch's trial was set for March 28, but during Friday's hearing, both sides indicated they didn't believe they'd be ready to proceed at that time and Werner vacated that date. A new date was not set.

Stauch was already found competent to stand trial for murder after two separate mental health evaluations. Her next court date is set for March 17.

Say WHAT??? Gannon's poor family, I tell ya.

First of all so now they don't want a jury trial. That means a bench trial I assume so a judge deciding her fate and guilt.

Psychosis. I gather the onset occurred in jail then as it is a change of plea this long in... Hmm.

I don't doubt it is her best defense as the woman has no defense. She is a child torturer and murderer and went to great lengths in scheming to cover it up.

He ultimately ruled to allow the change of plea which resets the date for a "speedy trial" to occur. However, that timeline won't start until after the court receives the initial evaluation, Werner said. So we start all over basically. Again, Gannon's poor family.

Right after that, defense attorney Josh Tolini said they have an expert from out of state who recently agreed to assist and said that the expert believes there is a high likelihood of "psychosis." I'm cynical but to me this way of wording things means they had to go out of state to find someone they hope will find her mentally incompetent, a defense "expert", and he recently agreed to assist and feels there is a high likelihood of psychosis. So what exactly has he seen that he recently agreed? Did they just give him a phone call, ask what he charges and tell them they think she is psychotic and so he can say there is a high likelihood she is? Of course her attorneys said this, not the expert. Of course to be fair maybe the expert is exceptional and he has thoroughly reviewed her records and met with her...?

He said they did not bring this up with the intent to delay the case, but said it was Stauch's best defense.
Yeah, right. This has went on forever and Leticia has been danced to, allowed to delay and represent herself, back to being represented, etc. Mental evals have taken forever and a day or a zillion. They bring this up now...? And it does delay, it restarts the clock. I do agree it is her best defense and well, she can't say she is not being represented well now can she? She likely will though, again, at some point.

Werner told Stauch as a result of the new plea, she could be given a polygraph during the evaluation and said any confession she makes will be admissible in court. He also explained that by pleading not guilty by reason of insanity she's waiving any confidentially of previous mental health records. A POLYGRAPH is used in mental evals and can be used and be admissible in court, or only a confession, which is it? Really? Well, that's not fair. I want one and I want someone else to take one. Everyone should have this opportunity then, not just murder defendants.

Prosecutors did not challenge the request but noted the decision not to challenge does mean they believe the claim. Is this an error in the article? Should there be the word "not" between the word does and mean? Or are they saying it means they do believe the claim?

Again, Gannon's poor family. In January, Gannon was already gone two years. And now the clock is starting over for his justice. I gotta tell ya, one has to be a criminal to get so many delays. What a system.

Mental evaluation delayed in Gannon Stauch killing

The date for a trial in the murder case of Gannon Stauch remains unknown after a new court appearance for his stepmother and accused killer Letecia Stauch.

Stauch did not appear in court at a status conference Thursday. Judge Gregory Werner announced that he signed off on her motion to be excused from it.

The conference lasted fewer than 10 minutes and centered around the latest delay in getting a report from the state hospital on Stauch’s third mental evaluation.

State doctors have reported backups for months on the evaluation. Previously, doctors said delays were resulting from the large volume of documents in Stauch’s case files. Thursday, the judge reviewed a new letter from state doctors explaining they need more records to finish the report.

The reports doctors are now seeking are in South Carolina. Stauch’s defense attorney announced he and a social worker plan to fly to South Carolina Monday to get them. The defense told the court they should have the records needed in two weeks.

Back in February, Stauch changed her plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. She and her defense attorneys filed a motion then to waive a jury trial, but no decision was made without the results of her mental evaluation.

State doctors now tell the court they should be able to have their report completed by the end of May. A new court date was set for June 9.

They will have the records in two weeks but are going to get them Monday makes little sense but whatever.

And she and her attorney think she has what qualifies to plead reason of insanity and yet they don't have a report stating any such thing and how even can her doctors have told her or her attorney that if they have yet to see all records to even finish their eval or a report.

Not even going to try to figure this out. Beyond me at the moment, smh.

All I know is it is ridiculous.

This is getting beyond ridiculous!

That b**** is competent. The crime shows planning from his murder to her disposing of him. And that's not insanity or temporary. They always try this bulls**t!
