The bodies of two young Black girls were found stuffed inside suitcases and buried in shallow graves on the east side of Cleveland, police said Tuesday.
One was believed to be between age 8 to 13, and the other was 10 to 14 years old. And so far, neither has been identified.

"We are hoping to find answers," Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said Tuesday at a news conference. "This is a terrible, tragic situation."
The bodies are in the custody of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
"At this time, there are no clear indicators of the cause of death of the two young females,” Todd said. “We don’t know how long the juveniles had been at this location. It was some time, so it’s not just something that was recent.”
The girls have not been linked to any active missing persons cases in the area, Todd said.
A dog walker stumbled across the first body in the vicinity of East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue and notified police around 6 p.m. Monday, Todd said.

As they were searching the area, Cleveland homicide detectives found a second shallow grave with a suitcase that contained another body.

Todd said the girls were in an area that does not get a lot of foot traffic.
“Detectives have been actively canvassing the area, but the problem is the timeline,” she said.
Todd said authorities have no leads or suspects and asked anybody with information to call the Cleveland Police Department's homicide unit at 216-623-5464.
She said tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 216-252-7463.

This is horrific!!!! The girls haven’t been reported missing?

Just random bits of info from a few other articles.

Officials said someone walking their dog near East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue found what appeared to be a body inside a suitcase around 6 p.m. on Monday. When officers responded to the scene near Ginn Academy, they found one of the bodies stuffed in a suitcase in a shallow grave. The second shallow grave with the body stuffed in a suitcase was found after officers searched the area.

"This is a field close to the school over there," Todd said. "This is just a residential neighborhood that I'm sure a lot of people do frequent."

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has custody of the bodies and will identify the girls. Todd said there is no clear indication of possible causes of death for the girls or how long the girls were there.

"It was some time, so it's not something that was recent," Todd said.

There is no suspect, Todd added.

A man was walking his dog in the area for the first time in a while due to the snow, and the dog hit on the scent, police said.

Both suitcases were partially buried in shallow graves. Investigators believe the victims had been there for quite some time.

As of now, there are no missing children’s cases matching the description of the victims.

Detectives are also checking with state and federal partners.

Officers responded and confirmed the first suitcase contained a body. They found the second suitcase nearby, Todd said. The girls’ remains were found intact and were not dismembered, she said. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office now has custody of them.

One girl is estimated to be between 8 1/2 and 13 years old. The other is believed to be between 10 1/2 and 14 years old, Todd said Tuesday afternoon. Both are Black.

It was unclear Tuesday how the girls had died or how long they had been there, Todd said, citing recent heavy snowfall that may have concealed the graves. But they do know they were there for “some time.”

“This is a traumatic event for our officers, for the community. This is just such a tragic incident, but we are trying to develop any leads we can. That’s why we are also asking for the community’s help,” said Todd. “We know that this didn’t just happen. We still have to develop exactly when this happened. We don’t have any indication this is a clear threat to public safety.”

The Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit is now seeking investigative leads from the public and have launched a 24-hour daily tip line, which can be reached at 216-623-5464.

If the man's dog reacted to a "scent" and they are able to tell approximate age and race after only 24 hours...they can't have been there THAT long.
My first impression when reading "not recent" is like, years ago. But based on what they've said so far? I think months is more likely. JMO.

Police video shows discovery of suitcase leading to bodies found in Cleveland: I-Team

Cleveland police video released to the FOX 8 I-Team shows what had not seen before in the investigation into the bodies of young girls found in suitcases.

You see police arriving at the scene and finding a suitcase that started the investigation.

Body camera video shows police driving up to the scene off of East 162, and you see officers taking their first steps in a field next to Ginn Academy.

The video give us the first look at how one suitcase was discovered partially in the ground.

You hear an officer say,

“I think it’s partially buried,” an officer said. He then told another officer, “Could you flash your light on it?”

Then, you see an officer begin to unzip the suitcase to look inside.

Police went to that scene off East 162th Street after getting a call from a man in the neighborhood.

You hear how he described for officers finding that suitcase while walking his dog, saying for days his dog had been very interested in that spot.

“You said it’s been sitting there for almost a week?” an officer asked.

“It’s been sitting over there. She’s been sniffing. She sniffed a little too long,” the man answered.

As an officer described one body, he said, “It’s just like folded in a fetal position.”
