‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

My son's dad had a pacemaker and it created an alarm to authorities when it went into working mode. Not sure which authorities were notified automatically, but wouldn't that have happened in all cases? I have no idea if smart devices were part of the process or not. I don't know a ton about it and son is still in mourning, so don't want to bring it up to him now. But, I do know the alerts saved his dad from death more than once over the years.
Well there's no indication at this point anyone was notified until the family notified LE. I think a pacemaker would notify the doctor, I recall hearing that in some case, can't recall when and where. I'm not sure if it would notify authorities. Maybe it would 911? But if so, they would have been there before the family contacted them.

I guess just because she went off the watch, etc., doesn't mean of course the pacemaker stopped working. Maybe a phone call gets made and she was forced to say all was fine?

the person I knew with one was so long ago there were no Apple watches nor notifying etc. And things could interfere with them.

She was very active as I said but one day her husband went home for lunch and found her dead on the kitchen floor. There had been a malfunction of it is what was said at the time.

Anyhow the pacemaker still works independently of the watch, etc. right? i'd hope of course.

I would think so, too. What if they can't get to the watch, the watch got wet, etc?

Okay, well, I'm just saying that if something were to happen to the watch, it shouldn't affect the pacemaker. (My opinion, only)
I agree. The pacemaker is to keep the heart beating and regular and shock it if needed. First and foremost it is going to do that. If it loses the ability to record or contact someone like with the watch, I'd sure think it would still work for the person. In helping the heart.

It would not affect the pacemaker at all. The fitness tracker would simply show no heartbeat. It also could be that they found the tracker and the time it stopped showing a heartbeat was when it was removed from her arm. They record no data when they are taken off, like when you are charging them. This could also be what happened is it's showing the time she took it off to charge it

But if her heart stops, why doesn't the pacemaker send the alert?

That's why I am not convinced that her pacemaker actually stopped.

My dad's pacemaker didn't send any kind of alert. He was hooked up to another device for a remote reading, but it wasn't his pacemaker itself that did it.
No idea if she had one that had that capability or not.

Okay. If I have it right, I think I do. Not swearing by it. I saw a live by STS on this case and went in but it was almost at the end of the live. TMZ allegedly got some message, email I think, about wanting a ransom for Nancy Guthrie. Do they quietly send it to the police or call them? NO. They make news of it.

It's probably total trash and who knows maybe even TMZ put someone up to it, that's how little I think of them. I don't consider them a news source. At all. Their **** in Reiner has irritated many and now they do this.

Fortunately I don't see much of them until recently now with these cases. i'm not a Hollywood type who looks for Hollywood sensational or biased news.

anyhow i figured I'd better at least share it. i doubt it's legit but who knows. I do know their headlines and sensational sh*t matter more to them than a victim's safety and timely reporting on it to LE.

This is what is stated upthread.

"Guthrie’s pacemaker stopped syncing with her Apple devices at around 2 a.m. on Sunday — which is when investigators suspect she was taken from her home against her will."

Oh and the only other thing I caught before the show ended is there is a $2,500 reward in this case. He said not to judge by the amount. I did't see the whole show so not sure what he meant other than that is pretty low.

PER AI:
A pacemaker automatically alerts
a patient's healthcare team (cardiologist/electrophysiologist) regarding serious heart rate irregularities or device failures through remote monitoring technology. These systems, which include home transmitters, send data about arrhythmias, low battery, or device malfunctions, allowing for prompt medical intervention, rather than notifying emergency services directly.
