The grieving children of Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer hope their “seriously ill” brother is spared from the death penalty as he stands trial for the murder of their parents, according to a new report.

Romy and Jake Reiner believe their brother Nick Reiner’s
alleged stabbing of their famous parents was the result of a devastating mental collapse as a family friend said the last thing the family wants is “another killing,”
the US Sun reported.

“Rob and Michele’s family, despite everything, do not want Nick to get the death penalty, as they insist this horrific incident was the byproduct of a mental health crisis,” the Reiner family friend told the Sun.
“The last thing the Reiners want is another killing in the face of this unbelievable tragedy, and that the death penalty would only bring more pain,” the friend added.

“It won’t bring back Rob and Michele.”
Romy and Jake Reiner were absent at Nick Reiner’s brief court appearance Tuesday, but the source told the Sun they’d support their disturbed sibling if he were to plead not guilty by reason of insanity at his arraignment on Feb. 23.
The troubled middle child was reportedly “diagnosed with schizophrenia just weeks before the stabbings and was under close psychiatric care.”
Prior to the Dec. 14 bloodbath, doctors altered his meds, “which the family believes, triggered increasingly concerning behavior,” the Sun reported.

Nick Reiner, 32, has a well-documented history of substance abuse and mental health issues, with multiple rehab stints since age 15.
The Reiner family released a statement in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 double murder, asking for “speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman charged Reiner with two counts of murder with the “special circumstance allegation of multiple murders,” which keeps the death penalty on the table.
However, Hochman has indicated that the family’s wishes will be a factor in the final sentencing approach.

Even if a death sentence were handed down, California remains under a moratorium established by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2019, making an eventual execution unlikely unless it’s lifted in the future.
They are talking they don't want another death, if the DP was imposed. Also they say IF he were to plead NGRI and again he can't just choose to do that, they would support that. They simply do not want him to get the DP is what it seems to be more so which isn't surprising since Rob and perhaps both parents allegedly were against the DP.

They have no "quote" from the family other than the December statement all have heard. It's from a "friend" saying this is how the family feels.

Also someone is erroneous as they say he was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia and TMZ says he was diagnosed in 2020 which was not recently.

So in taking all that, I don't find the article very believable or significant.

He cannot just decide to plead NGRI.

Okay I looked specifically for CA and I guess that's wrong, they can plead NGRI first but it is NOT a finding. And in fact puts the burden of proof on the defendant. It is not a status or a finding, nothing but an attempt, a claim, and then it has to be proven AFTER guilt is found.
Yes, in California, you plead
Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) first, but this triggers a separate sanity trial after guilt on the crime is established (or admitted); you don't have to be previously declared insane by a mental health professional, but must prove legal insanity at the time of the crime using the M'Naghten rule (unable to know right from wrong/nature of act) in that second trial. It's a plea, not a pre-existing status, and the burden of proof is on the defendant.

I searched this specifically for California. Not surprising they are different. It never is.

I think publications talking about friends or sources saying what the family things are questionable. Not direct from the family. And the odds of family being on the same page in most families in a case such as this are slim as well. I put little store in it.

He deserves the death penalty. But would likely die of natural causes on death row. NGRI. He knew what he was doing.

They don't want another killing. I hate that. It's not the same thing!!!

So you believe that somebody that actually needs a public defender should possibly go without one because some dude that has access to money ate up the budget for them?
No one know that he has access to money at all. NO ONE. He was living in the guest house for goodness sakes. You seem to be stuck on that he might have had a trust fund but no one knows that either.

They will go by if he can afford a private defense to appoint him a public defender for good and that will tell us.

There's always a guarantee of a public defender. A murderer shouldn't have the benefit of the people he has killed money.

A guarantee if they fit the income situation. He must and also the public defenders said they are on this for the long term. That must mean they think he fits and is eligible or they already know so.

It means he does not have enough for a private defense.

Just because mommy and pops were putting a roof over his head doesn't mean he has any money of his own, nor any trust.
He also lived on the streets for a long time which would also indicate no money of his own.

I can see him saying he doesn’t want to do the insanity defense. He probably feels justified for whatever reason. That happens a lot with killers. I haven’t seen where he has any sort of empathy or caring for others whatsoever. Even in the interviews that I’ve watched, he acts like he can’t get away from his father fast enough. Body language. Just my impression.

I'd agree on he is not comfortable with his father nor seems to want to be around him, doesn't like him and in that interview re the show, I think he holds back what he'd like to say, knowing what his father will get upset over him saying for image, etc.

I don't know the reason for Jackson stepping down and so far as far as I'm concerned it is all speculation but the one fact there is, they or he did not line up another private lawyer first. That seems to indicate to me he has no money to speak of AND no private lawyer is going to get paid. Those are the only facts that I see.

That's love.

No there isn't. Every government entity runs off of a budget. Every. Single. One.

While a poor person that qualifies and funding is exhausted, they will get very bad representation that they would not deserve.

It would be a 100% waste of funding giving it to anybody that could afford to pay for an attorney. It would be like a person that had 100k in the bank but they technically qualify for food stamps because their actual income is low.

Califirnia's slayer law prevents NR from benefitting from funding from the parents he killed, is what people are saying, so they can't do it even if they wanted to.
