A Miami mother will spend the rest of her life in prison after pleading guilty Friday for her role in the starvation, torture and murder of her adopted daughter in a case that rocked Florida’s child welfare agency.

Under the plea deal, Carmen Barahona, 69, will testify against her husband, Jorge Barahona, who faces the death penalty if convicted of abusing and murdering his 10-year-old adopted daughter, Nubia.

The actual sentencing will be deferred until after Carmen Barahona’s cooperation with prosecutors is complete. If she doesn’t follow through and cooperate truthfully, Barahona could still face the possibility of the death penalty.

Competent to stand trial as of July 2025.

A South Florida judge ruled Wednesday that the defendant in one of the most notorious child abuse cases in Florida history is mentally competent to stand trial. The ruling clears the way for trial proceedings to resume after years of delays.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Andrea Ricker Wolfson said Jorge Barahona, 58, can stand trial for the 2011 murder of his 10-year-old daughter, Nubia Barahona.

As of October he was trying to drop his public defender.
The South Florida man charged in the 2011 killing of his 10-year-old adoptive daughter and the severe abuse of her twin brother won't be allowed to fire his public attorneys, a judge said Wednesday.

Jorge Barahona, 58, was in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Wednesday for a hearing, where he told the judge he's not seeing eye-to-eye with his legal team, saying they want him to plead guilty.

The defense team cited Barahona's request as an example of why they say he is not competent to stand trial.
