ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

I don't know what I think of this. Ten years was very light for murder but she did live a very unfair life with her mother. STILL it IS murder and he got life.

I have seen her interviewed and she seemed to have avail herself of education and doing good things while on the inside and she seemed to have grown and changed for the better BUT how does one know they can trust that. The way she was raised has to have her screwed up as to normal life and emotions but then maybe not, I don't know.

She served her time so I suppose it isn't like they let her go early, she was always denied parole. I believe I recall she did try for it.

I guess a person could complain she was sentenced too light to begin with but she did serve the sentence given.

I don't, however, think it wise to advertise she wants to meet Taylor Swift and that she's going to a Chiefs game.and when. I'm sure not all would be happy with her. Also she is not some celebrity she is a convicted murderer. She'd be smart to make herself a life and stay out of the limelight imo. I find announcing this and even thinking this way troubling...

Did she end up with her mother's estate because she shouldn't have.

Time will tell I guess how it will all go and if she's truly learned and grown up.

Yeah, I'm conflicted about this too.

OMG now you're agreeing with me. That's twice in just days (well vice versa me agreeing with you).

But seriously, yeah, it's a tougher one than some. In general I think murderers belong behind bars never to be let out and this WAS planned as well. But we can't even say she did not serve her sentence. She did.

I'll really be waiting to see what she does with her life. Hopefully we never hear another word about her, that's what I think best. Go make a life, do nothing wrong and don't use the known name for anything and personally I'd refuse interviews as well. Jmo though. My opinion will go down if she seeks the limelight and even the Taylor Swift remark has me wondering...

It's just kind of funny to me of all the things she could do first after being out and her reasoning for picking this event.

I feel for her and yes, the very best thing for her would be to lie low for a bit and get her bearings in the outside world for a bit first. She has never really experienced life like we all know it and I'm afraid she will be like some of the Amish at Rumspringa and go crazy with freedom.

Yeah this event and maybe TMZ did it but it almost seems like she'd hope her wish and her name and pick on TMZ will get Taylor to meet her. I don't like it.

I go both ways or have thoughts both ways. She should be naive to the world first at her mom's mercy and then in prison. But she also lived with a con woman and she herself saw how to con. We k now she used the itnternet and probably became a bit more savvy than we think and I guess we could say in some ways she conned the bf into killing her mom and she is now out while he has life. I think she may be savvier than we think

However on the other hand I also feel as you say. She suffered with her mother and did not learn and live in a "normal" world. I feel sorry for her childhood and so forth.

The choice of events I don't think wise and don't understand either. She gets out on the 28th and this will be her First adult New Year's out at a HUGE event. I guess maybe it is in her mind to celebrate her freedom but I honestly don't think it wise and I don't think touting it wise either. Who is she going with would be another question? Her dad? A friend? Where is she going from prison in fact? To her dad's? To her own home? I don't think those details should be public but she sure made attendance at the game public. Won't that bring reporters at minimum much less letting the public know? Already there is Taylor Swift. I take it Swift is going to be at your stadium?

Just what celebrities want, to meet a convicted murderer and be put in a spot no matter how much this girl may deserve some sympathy...

And then right from the start she gets attention doesn't she...

I don't like it. Maybe it's naivete or an ill thought out plan. Maybe someone in her family or that cares about her suggested this as a celebration of her freedom, a big one, on New Year's Eve.

I guess we'll see.

Good points about learning how to scam the system. I wouldn't be as worried if they let her BF go. He learned a hard lesson and I highly doubt will kill again.

|Well I have learned the hard way in life imo and have some cynicism. I tend to trust first until given reason not to and I have learned this is the wrong way to do it but I still find it hard to fight that automatic way of mine of doing that and giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I recall her interview, not every question, etc but I remember well my thoughts. Years ago and in prison. I felt she had all the right answers to hard questions. I felt she had learned. I felt she had remorse. I tended to believe her. But at the very same time I was thinking but do you KNOW this about her and do you know she is being authentic or she just knows all the things needed and the right things to say.

She may not have had a choice but to con with her mother but she learned it and she saw the donations, sympathy and other things that came from it. She learned how to con. And quite simply to use people as her mother did. She did so too, with the bf.

Even IF she wants to, this has been ingrained just as my nature has to trust automatically out of the gate. She could apply herself in years in prison as to what is available but she's never lived on her own in the free world and the ways she knows its to get attention, get sympathy, con and use. Tne years really isn't much and she's still quite young.

I don't know if the bf should be out. He did the act. Repeatedly. He may have felt he was defending someone helpless and abused but I'm not even sure of that. I think more so that she likely should have faced a stiffer sentence as he did. I'd have to look back though at what their respective ages were too....?

Thanks for the rare compliment EMU!! She did learn to scam it is just a fact. I have to tell you that I can think of someone I know who has a great child but was raised around lying and taught to lie and even meaning well, and a very good person and child, in a spot, even a minor one, the child slips right to a lie. It isn't their fault but it is what someone has had them doing their entire childhood. Gypsy has had that times a million.

I wonder if her mom named her as she did for a reason. That's another thing, an uncommon name if she keeps it and uses it...

I don't like her at ALL! Her family sad they were shocked after the murder because she was never handicapped. It was all a show. She plays innocent very well. She will con people to get her way.
