Fremont family goes missing hours after bizarre 911 call

Investigators are looking for a Fremont family, worried that no one has seen them for four days and about recent erratic behavior from the father.

No one has seen nor heard from Anthony, Suzette, Brandon and Noah Cirigliano since Sunday, police said Thursday.

“We don’t see any signs of violence, we don’t see any signs of foul play right now. There’s no signs of struggle inside the home,” Fremont Police Department Chief Tim Rodwell told News 8. “But everyone we’ve talked to … they all describe this to be extremely abnormal behavior from Tony and Suzette.”

The family left behind Suzette Cirigliano’s mother, who has dementia and needs full-time care. She was found walking around the neighborhood around 9 p.m. Monday, Rodwell said. Neighbors called police. That’s when the search began.

The home’s doors were locked and the family’s minivan was gone. Pets were left behind. There’s no sign of Tony Cirigliano’s cellphone, though relatives told News 8 that his wife’s was still in the house. Police said the family’s phones were off.

“Tony was exhibiting some signs of paranoia” shortly before the family vanished, Rodwell said.

The chief said Tony Cirigliano called 911 just after midnight Sunday and two officers went to his home. He was talking about the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and wanted to talk to the FBI.

“It’s not normal behavior or normal interactions we have with the community,” Rodwell said.

The officers spent about 45 minutes to an hour talking to Tony Cirigliano and his wife to make sure everyone was safe and “that mental illness wasn’t putting anybody in jeopardy,” Rodwell said. He said the two were told they should call police again if they were concerned about anything.

Relatives told News 8 they do not think Tony Cirigliano would hurt his family and rather believe that he may be trying to protect them. They said he was troubled over the weekend and said “bad things” were going to happen.

Tony Cirigliano, 51, stands 5-foot-6 and weighs around 180 pounds. He has brown hair and is clean-shaven. Suzette Cirigliano, also 51, is 5-foot-9 and 120 pounds with blonde hair and glasses. Brandon Cirigliano, 19, is 5-foot-8 and about 120 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Noah, 15, is 5-foot-6 and about 120 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Both Brandon and Noah have autism, police say.

Fremont PD searching for family of 4 missing since the weekend

The Fremont Police Department is sounding the alarms in search of a missing family of four.

Police Chief Tim Rodwell said the Cirigliano’s have not been seen since the weekend.

“A little bit after midnight on Sunday morning October 16, two of my officers were dispatched to Tony Cirigiliano asking for help in relation to information he believed to have had regarding the September 11th bombings or terrorist attack,” said Chief Rodwell during a Zoom interview with Fox 17 on Thursday. “My officers were concerned about everyone’s welfare and spent about an hour talking to everybody and making sure they’re OK, and whether or not Tony was going through some sort of mental issue that would be dangerous.”

After that, the police left but told Tony to call them if he needed anything. The officers were going to be in the area on patrol.

Then, over 24 hours later police returned.

“Fast forward to October 17 my officers were dispatched to North Michigan Avenue again where the Cirigliano family lives. This time on a report from a neighbor that approximately a 77 year old mother to Suzette, who walked away from the home and appeared to be going through some sort of mental issue like a dementia or some other problem,” Chief Rodwell said. “My officers at that point determined that Tony, Suzette, and the boys were not at the house.”

Tony and Suzette had two teenage boys, Brandon and Noah.

That day, police made sure that the grandmother was OK. Local extended family told them that the grandmother’s behavior was strange. Tony and Suzette cared for her around the clock.

“Everyone describes Tony as a very loving father and Tony and Suzette really had a full-time job taking care of Suzette’s mom and a full-time job taking care of the two boys as well,” Chief Rodwell said. “They really are articulating a concern to make sure that they’re OK.”

Wow. Unusual. Why if mom needed around the clock care would the adults leave her? But then if he was having issues hard to say what he was thinking.

Praying that all are safe. Certainly a good chance they are. As good as the chance they aren't.

In the picture of the couple, even though he is likely seated, he looks a lot taller than her and she looks not so tall. But in the post it has her as pretty tall for a woman and him shorter. Just an observation. I wouldn't have guessed that from the pic unless they got it backwards.

Michigan family of 4 missing after father calls 911 asking for police protection: What we know

A family from Fremont, Michigan has been missing for five days following “paranoid” behavior from the father.

Fremont is in Newaygo County, north of Grand Rapids. The Fremont Police Department put out an alert for the missing family on Wednesday night.

Police said the Cirigliano family is “very concerned” about their missing family members Anthony (Tony), 51, Suzette, 51, Brandon, 19, and Noah, 15. Other family last had contact with them on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022.

Relatives told News 8 that Suzette Cirigliano’s cell phone was still in the house, but Tony Cirigliano’s cell phone is missing. Police said the family’s phones were off.

Brandon and Noah both have autism, according to police. The two sons were homeschooled and the family kept to themselves, relatives told News 8.

Police told News 8 that Tony Cirigliano was “exhibiting some signs of paranoia” before the family vanished.

Tony Cirigliano called 911 just after midnight on Sunday and two officers went to his home.

Operator: Newaygo County 911.

Tony Cirigliano: Yes, hello. This is Anthony John Cirigliano. (Says address).

Operator: OK, what’s going on tonight?

30 seconds of silence in the recording

Tony Cirigliano: Yes. Everyone is OK. But I need the Fremont Police Department and I believe he is Captain Jon Geeting. I need some police protection immediately.

Operator: (Intelligible).

Tony Cirigliano: It is of vital national interest. It is related to Sept. 11 and people want to erase me from the face of the Earth. I’m not crazy. Mr. Geeting knows me. I’m a Christian. I just need some help and then the U.S. government will take it from here. I know this sounds crazy. You don’t have instructions for this. Please send someone that knows Geeting and can talk to U.S. authorities, please.

Operator: OK, And do you have any weapons there?

Tony Cirigliano: No weapons at all. Not even a BB gun.

Operator: Alright, and how do we spell your last name?

Tony Cirigliano: Sure, it’s C-I-R-I-G-L-I-A-N-O.

Operator: And your phone number?

Tony Cirigliano: We have no landline.

Operator: OK, alright, we’ll get him over there for you. (Address).

Tony Cirigliano: Can they come with their lights off not to frighten my children, please.

Operator: Yep. Definitely.

Cirigliano: OK. I’ll look for them and knock on the door. Please try to send Mr. Geeting even if he has to be awoke from his sleep. It’s that important, please.

Operator: Yep. He’s on right now.

Cirigliano: OK, thank you.

Operator: Yep, bye.

Tony’s brother, Paul Cirigliano, told Local 4 it’s unlike them to be out of touch.

“They usually wouldn’t even go so far as like Walmart without letting somebody know, so it’s very unlike them,” said Paul Cirigliano. “It’s certainly not an abrupt vacation by any means.”

Paul Cirigliano found the 911 call made by his brother concerning.

“We think maybe he might be having mental health sort of issue, and maybe he’s scared of something, but we definitely just want to let him know there’s nothing to be scared of, and he can reach out, and we’ll help him,” Paul Cirigliano said.

Unfortunately unless they could prove he was an immediate danger to himself or others, they cannot force him to go anywhere.
I'm sure you're right, but that's the problem. When someone I know was seeing angels who were telling him to do things, there wasn't a thing the family could do. That is, until he lit himself on fire because the angels told him that's what he must do.

Stopping for gas and food is hopefully a good sign.

A family from Fremont, Michigan that has been missing since Sunday following “paranoid” behavior from the father was spotted at a gas station in the Upper Peninsula on Monday.

According to a report from News 8, the family was spotted at 10:48 a.m. Monday at a gas station in the Upper Peninsula.

The family was seen at the Blaney Park Quik Stop on US-2 near M-77, northeast of Manistique and about 70 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge. News 8 said the Fremont Police Department says surveillance video confirmed it was the Ciriglianos.

News 8 spoke to the gas station manager, Heidi Bowler, who told them the mother and two sons came into the gas station to use the restroom. One of the sons asked to use a phone to make a call, but didn’t know how to use it.

“He was acting a little strange, so we were just watching him,” Bowler told News 8. “The only reason we paid attention to them is because the boys were a little different. I thought, ‘I wonder what’s wrong. Like, why is he using the phone? No one else is asking.’ It was just a little odd.”

According to the report, the family was only there for about 15 minutes. Police said they got gas and purchased some food.

Well alive at that point then... Boy asked to use phone, maybe a chance to call for help but didn't now how...

I hate the Mackinac bridge. I mean the area is gorgeous but I do not like crossing that thing.

Lots of water and wilderness up there. The UP used to have a lot more businesses and such back in the day but most are long closed. However the Mackinac area is bustling usually.

The Great Lakes, the Canadian border. Just thoughts. If he thought something was going on in "our country" would he try to go to Canada? Or the UP. Remote that's for sure. Been through it many a time and not a gas station, restaurant or bar on it for a long way. Maybe if one leaves the one main road there may be but not along the main travel route there isn't. Last I knew.

I think it is a fine line LE has to walk with such things. Mental illnesses, families struggling to cope with such but overall probably decent folk. They likely don't want to haul them in or do that to them if asked not to but in the same breath they are dam*ed if they do and dam*ed if they don't make the right call.

I wonder about the wife. I mean if the sons have issue and dad had a break of some type and they are caring for the sons and her mother, wow. That is a load for anyone without such issues.

Are these bio children?

The part about the family home schooling and keeping to themselves raises some alarm bells with me...

Not saying it applies to this family but there are not good reasons some choose do do that...

I would say with the disabilities of the boys, homeschooling doesn't surprise me a bit in THIS case. They probably do much better in a home invironment.

That's true but you also have a family that kept to themselves, left a grandmother alone and where the husband may have some issues. There could be a lot more to it but maybe not. It sounds like a biological family but I can think of a few cases where all thought that for months on end and came to find out the children were adopted or fostered or something else and more was going on.

I definitely am not saying it is the case but there are many caring homeschoolers but it is also a way to keep children and even spouses isolated. And then a man that thinks people are after them/him at least recently...

It does bring some thoughts of certain types to mind is all I am saying.

But we don't know enough for me to even think that. Just thoughts.

Even allowing for some things, this is STRANGE.

First why are they way over on the edge of the lot right from the outset.

Is the person saying "hit record" and another saying "I am recording" the person copying the video or is it them?

Everyone is acting really odd. Looking out windows like for who is around etc.

Jmo. Maybe I need to watch a few times.

No matter what is going on, what all at some point have to do is stop for gas. Or food. Or to pee.

by looking at family pics that have been posted, I am fairly confident that the boys are theirs. They look like their parents a LOT.

But yes, there are many that use it for bad intentions, but having a family member that teaches children like these in a public school, they would even agree that some kids are far better off at home. Some of the severely autistic kids don't attend much because of issues simply getting them to school without a meltdown and when they get big, there isn't much many adults can do to force them to go. Some are also of danger to their classmates with hitting and biting The one my family member was in charge of last school year is no longer allowed in the school because of these issues. He got big and nobody could control him. That is sooooooooo above the pay scale for a teacher. He needed a more therapeutic environment that public school just wasn't able to provide.

All that is definitely possible, I 'm just keeping all the thoughts open so far.

I heard (if true) they had been in a church school but they removed them, not sure if parents or school) and then home schooled. Not sure how recently.

I'm just wondering about it all if there are control issues, abuse, if he does have serious issues or what happened there, etc. The dad I mean.

I sure could see living in an environment like that with that many people depending on you to simply hit a wall. Not saying it's right, but I can understand a bit if totally overwhelmed. Hopefully just took off a bit, but leaving pets and the mother behind gives me major pause.

I honestly can see either yep. It certainly wouldn't be an easy situation. But that same thing can cause a lot of stress and snapping too so that worries me as well.

Or like I said they could be home schooling and private for a reason. I sure hope not.

Something just is triggering I guess what I'd call an instinct or the spidey sense as some would say though. The fact the kid wanted a phone in the gas station for one. Something just about the guy too. Not fair I know to go by pics and such but the one who looks stressed to me is the mom.

Anyhow though, I can believe either.

I also found his 911 call very organized, saying himself he isn't crazy which in other words meant he knew it would sound crazy and some other things.

If they are headed to Canada, he has to know by now (unless ignoring news and all types of communication that the minute they cross that border LE will be advised. They may have the right and no arrest necessarily warranted but they are being looked for. Did he also not trust their own family members to leave a note or let them know they are safe? Of course if it is a mental break, that might explain that.

This was six days ago. Are they staying in the car nights? Have a cabin or broke in? It is pretty remote up that way once not near any small city. There are old resorts and campgrounds (unsure how many operating) that may not be up on news and plenty probably of cabins one could break into. And tons of WOODS and forestland.

Of course if they crossed into Canada before LE knew about the gas station footage, they could be in Canada. However, I would guess LE has had border patrol check their cameras if no one recalls them.
