This is INTERESTING. I just now read the initial Wiki coverage in the first post. Crazy this is "unsolved". The last two paragraphs under "Suspects and Reaction" re the Zodiac Killer here in the US are particularly interesting. The entire "article" is worth reading. I don't think I've ever heard of this one. I know very few Italian cases actually...
Just as a basis on Italy itself, Italy is about the physical size of the State of Arizona. However about 62 million people are packed into the small country. That's about the population of California and Texas combined (the ones that are on the census anyhow).
I say this because still for all these years, all these murders, notes, phone calls, etc., and country size, it seems this should be not only solved but quite clearly solved with few questions and it isn't...

Hi I could not miss here in this discussion; my opinion on the case is quite unconventional: I believe that the killer is one of the sardinians, but not of the Vinci or Mele circle, but of the superior Sardinians those of the Anonima Sarda crime syndacate; a Sardinian shepherd kidnapper who died in 1998 who knew both the Vinci and the Mele who were a very good friend of Francesco Vinci; one who knew both how to shoot and how to use a knife; one who apparently had several sexual disorders; I also think, contrary to many, that there has never been a passing of a weapon; I also think he may have been part of a group of people, not necessarily alone. In any case, I believe that the key to the mystery is the double crime of 68.
The person that I believe is the killer or at least one of the killers gravitated and was part of that environment and frequented people like Mario Sale, Giovanni Farina, people with whom it was dangerous to joke, but apparently knew Francesco Vinci too. he seems to have been the driver, and he was allegedly someone who had sexual problems, in short, a Sardinian connecting the Vinci, Mele and the Company; in addition to this he seems to have been an informer for the Florence public prosecutor's office, in particular for Vigna; so to speak, he was not a Vinci-style delinquent or someone like Stefano Mele, here we are talking about high-ranking delinquency, which goes beyond simple theft of livestock. In those years and in those areas (especially Calvana) there was a strong presence of Sardinian immigrants, shepherds, bricklayers, and criminals of all kinds; the Sardinian bar located in Prato is a point of reference and aggregation for the island's immigrants and it cannot be excluded that the future Monster or the monsters are Sardinian; and in those years there were kidnappings in Tuscany by the Company. Finally, I believe that there have been important coverings, cover-ups, disappearances of vital finds for the investigation, precisely because, in my opinion, important characters were involved, perhaps also linked to investigative environments.
I believe that the key to solving the mystery is 1968; for me the first double crime is of the Sardinians, Francesco Vinci and Salvatore could not bear that she, Barbara Locci went her way with a Sicilian and they decide to kill her: so either they do the crime, but I see it hard because both were still in some way controlled and shadowed see Salvatore Vinci and in any case there is bad blood between them and they must never agree, or they charge someone, but who could it be? Pacciani? Vigilanti? No, I don't see them just to assign someone, the Sardinians are used to washing dirty clothes in the family, so maybe they hire someone they know, there were many Sardinians in Tuscany in those years, the anonymous kidnappings raged, in short, let's talk of bandits, not cheap sheep, people accustomed to killing and using the knife well: from here then we can think of any way: either the one who committed the crime kept the gun and continued this damned gun changed hands and someone else continued the crimes; I believe that instead whoever committed the first double crime was kept the gun and continued until 1985, and has a very specific name; I underline that this person seems to have received facilities from the prosecutor's office (he collaborated on the kidnappings, giving information) and was in some way preserved, protected; once you get to 1985, seeing that the circle is tightening more and more, he stops killing, makes the gun and knife disappear and leaves the scene forever.

Amicone's inquiry has been published in Italian magazine Tempi and newspapers Il Giornale and Libero. The suspect is a former superintendent of the Florence American Cemetery in Italy, Joseph aka GIuseppe Bevilacqua, also known as Giuseppe, who was born on 20 December 1935, in Totowa, New Jersey, and had a 20-years career in the Army when he left it to move to Florence in 1974. Amicone wrote an account of a Bevilacqua's partial admission, in which he would have confessed to Amicone being responsible of the murders attributed to the Zodiac killer and the Monster of Florence in an unregistered conversation occurred on 11 September 2017. After the first publication in May 2018 , Bevilacqua denied this; even though threatened with a lawsuit, Amicone did not stop accusing him. In 2021, Amicone claimed that Bevilacqua would have been an undercover CID agent assigned to an investigation in San Francisco concerning SMA William O. Wooldridge and other Army sergeants at the time of Zodiac's homicides in 1969 and 1970. Whilst an Army criminal investigator in Italy in the early 1970s, Amicone says that Bevilacqua would have had access to a case file of a double murder near Florence in 1968 where bullets and shell casings had been improperly stored, and that Bevilacqua replaced the pieces of evidence with spent cartridges shot by the gun he would use in the Monster's homicides in order to link his future crimes to those murders for which he had an alibi. Maybe unconventional but certainly not impossible. There has to be some reason this sits unsolved or wasn't then. Other than just reading about it recently here, I know little but you are clearly well versed on it and researched and knowledgeable of the people and area and the time period and case. Knowing people of influence or the prosecutor who will lose something for you such as evidence or not investigate thoroughly certainly can be a reason a case isn't solved even today. So do you give any credence to the thought of Bevilacqua and the Zodiac killer and/or a possible connection? I know too little to really form an opinion. Your theory sounds very plausible and well thought out.

There is no evidence, more than 50 years have passed since the first crime, on Bevilacqua there is the material produced by the journalist Amicone, but no evidence here too; I wanted to understand for yourself if in the USA there has ever been talk of Joseph Joe Bevilacqua as a possible Zodiac? You know something?

I don't know anything. I didn't know anything about this case until I read this here and then looked it up on Wikipedia. @Mel70 knows a lot about serial killers, maybe she knows more. This case also might interest her or maybe she knows more about it.
I just thought this case was interesting and when it said he was possibly the Zodiac killer, I thought that was very interesting. Let's see if we can get Mel in here, maybe she knows something more about it.
