Circumstances of Disappearance
Zebb Quinn left the Asheville Wal-Mart where he worked at 9PM on January 2, 2000. He met with his friend Robert Jason Owen in the parking lot; they planned to look at a Mitsubish Eclipse car he was thinking about purchasing. Quinn and Owen drove separate cars and arrived at the Eblen Citgo gas station at 9:15PM. Prior to 9:30PM, Owen says Quinn flashed his lights near TC Roberson High School. When they pulled over, Quinn told Owen he had received a page and needed to make a phone call. When Quinn returned about 10 minutes later, he rear-ended Owens's truck. He apologized and said he wouldn't be able to look at the car that night, then drove away.

Owens was treated for head injuries and a broken rib he claimed were caused by an unrelated car accident several hours after Quinn disappeared. On January 4th, Owens called the Wal-Mart where Quinn worked and reported that Quinn was ill and would not be going to work that day. After giving his initial statement to police, Owens refused to cooperate further.

Quinn's car was discovered abandoned on January 16th with a live black Labrador puppy inside, as well as a plastic hotel key, several empty drink bottles, hairs, and a jacket. The puppy and jacket were not Quinn's. A pair of lips and two exclamation points were drawn in orange-pink lipstick on the rear windshield. In addition, the driver's seat was adjusted for someone shorter than Quinn. Quinn told loved ones that a female friend's boyfriend was abusive and had threatened him. In 2009, police collected hair, saliva, and fingerprint samples from her but stated that she was not a suspect.

In 2017, Robert Jason Owen was charged with the murder of Zebb Quinn.

Convicted killer says he saw Asheville teen Zebb Quinn murdered
More than 22 years after an Asheville teenager disappeared, a man convicted in another couple’s killing has admitted to knowledge about his murder.

Zebb Quinn went missing in January 2000 and was last seen leaving the Walmart in Asheville where he worked. He was 18 years old at the time.

In 2017, Robert Jason Owens was indicted on a murder charge in connection with Quinn’s disappearance. Quinn’s body has never been found.

Owens pleaded guilty on Monday to accessory after the fact to murder. In written statements released by the Buncombe County District Attorney, Owens says he saw a family member shoot and kill Quinn with a .22 rifle.

The family member Owens named is now dead.

Owens says he was there when the relative burned Quinn’s body and dumped the ashes in the woods near Owens Cove Road and Bent Creek. Investigators searched the area, but never found any remains or evidence to corroborate Owens’ statements.

However, the District Attorney said Owens’ plea is supported by other non-circumstantial evidence obtained by investigators and was discussed extensively with Quinn’s family, who approved of it.

For the first time, District Attorney Todd Williams said the development legally establishes that Quinn was murdered.

“Zebb Quinn would have been 41 this year,” Williams said. “It was always the hope of investigators and the DA’s Office that more facts and details would be uncovered... While we may never know the full truth these many years after Zebb’s disappearance, my sympathies are with the family and all who have suffered as a result.”

Zebb Quinn went missing 25 years ago in Asheville. What happened?

The anniversary of one of Western North Carolina's most enduring cold cases came in 2025. The name Zebb Quinn continues to gain attention in the state and across the nation.

Zebb Wayne Quinn, an 18-year-old Asheville resident described by his mother as hard-working, easygoing and trusting, disappeared on Jan. 2, 2000. More than two decades passed with no answers for his family, and in 2022, the case closed without a definitive answer with the plea deal of Robert Jason Owens.
