William Tyrrell (born 26 June 2011) is an Australian boy who disappeared at the age of 3 from Kendall, New South Wales, on 12 September 2014. He had been playing at his foster grandmother's house with his sister, and was wearing a Spider-Man suit at the time of his disappearance.[2] Tyrrell is believed to have been abducted.[3][4][5][6]

Despite extensive investigations, as of 21 June 2019, five years after his disappearance, Tyrrell has not been found, or his abductor(s) identified. On 12 September 2016, two years after his disappearance, a reward of A$1 million was offered for the recovery of William and does not require the arrest, charging or conviction of any person or persons.[7]

Today marks five years since William Tyrrell vanished without a trace from his foster grandmother's home, and questions are now being asked about a witness who claims to have seen him.

On September 12, 2014, about 10.15am, William went missing from the home in Kendall on NSW's mid north coast when he went to play in the yard.

Now, on the anniversary of the disappearance, police have launched a new hotline directly into the coroner's office, which is investigating.

But journalist Caroline Overington, who has closely followed the case and started the podcast Nowhere Child, has now spoken on William's foster mother publicly attacking police, saying they don't have any real leads.

"The investigation is now five years old and they don't have any real leads and there is no forensic evidence collected," she told Seven's Sunrise on Thursday.

"No trace of William has been found - not even a shoe or a hair or any sign that he was ever really here, and that is frustrating.

"But the police can't always tell you what they're doing.

"They always have something going on in the background."

On Thursday, detectives from strike force Rosann – which was established to investigate Tyrrell’s disappearance – issued a 56-year-old woman with a court attendance notice.

The woman – understood to be Tyrrell’s foster mother – will have her matter heard at Sydney’s Downing Centre local court on 24 May.


In a statement released on Thursday, NSW police said the woman was charged with knowingly giving false or misleading evidence.

Guardian Australia understands this occurred at a hearing before the NSW Crime Commission – a body that works alongside police to investigate serious crimes.

This is one case from the start I never believed William was abducted and it "smelled" to me like the "parents". I'm sadly not surprised that they now have charges relating to another child.

NSW Police are still committed to uncovering what happened to William Tyrrell after the young boy vanished in the state’s mid-north coast eight years ago.

Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty released a statement on the investigation on Monday – the anniversary of his disappearance.

He said their investigations are ongoing and they are continuing to prepare a brief for the coroner.

“Every effort is – and should be – channelled toward finding William Tyrrell,” he said.

“The Homicide Squad’s Strike Force Rosann is continuing to prepare a brief for the information of the Coroner for the purpose of determining what happened to William eight years ago today (Friday 12 September 2014).

“Our investigation is very much active and ongoing, and while I won’t go into specifics, I can assure the community that various activities, including those under Coronial Orders, are being undertaken every day.

“We are working with a large volume of information, and it is necessary to methodically explore and exhaust every line of inquiry; and that is a protracted process.

“This is all for William, and if it takes time and effort to get it right, it’s worth it.”

A landmark judgment of a $1.5 million payout in damages to a former suspect in the disappearance of NSW toddler William Tyrrell has been challenged.

In December, washing machine repairman Bill Spedding was awarded the money after being maliciously prosecuted by NSW Police as they searched for the three-year-old, who disappeared from a home in Kendall in September 2014.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Ian Harrison ordered that the State of NSW pay the 71-year-old $1.48 million plus interest after he was charged with historical child sex offences by police during their search for William.

The judge found the accusations brought against Spedding in 2015 were "concocted and false and could not be supported" and were made for the collateral purpose of furthering the investigation into William's location.

"I am satisfied that the institution and maintenance of the criminal prosecution was malicious. It was borne of malice directed to Mr Spedding and unrelated to the proper pursuit of the criminal law," Harrison said.

The State of NSW is now fighting the judge's findings in the NSW Court of Appeal.

It's been awhile but I have followed at length other cases in australia. Their legal system operates in a different way than ours. Some similiarities but a lot of differences. I can say I am not impressed in recent years with either.

Anyhow, in short, jmo and only imo, I have always felt the foster mother to be a liar. I have always felt he "disappeared" or died at the hands of who he was with. Granted my feelings over what we heard in the beginning until now aren't proof but that is just the bit we saw, I would hope they have more and can make a very good case.

I guess we will see.

It is encouraging to see a case of a little boy who was a foster child hasn't been ignored and is still very much on the burner. Whether it would be or it is public interest or real concern of LE that has it there all these years later, it is hard to say.
