William Tyrrell (born 26 June 2011) is an Australian boy who disappeared at the age of 3 from Kendall, New South Wales, on 12 September 2014. He had been playing at his foster grandmother's house with his sister, and was wearing a Spider-Man suit at the time of his disappearance.[2] Tyrrell is believed to have been abducted.[3][4][5][6]

Despite extensive investigations, as of 21 June 2019, five years after his disappearance, Tyrrell has not been found, or his abductor(s) identified. On 12 September 2016, two years after his disappearance, a reward of A$1 million was offered for the recovery of William and does not require the arrest, charging or conviction of any person or persons.[7]

William Tyrrell fifth anniversary of disappearance, questions on police handling

Today marks five years since William Tyrrell vanished without a trace from his foster grandmother's home, and questions are now being asked about a witness who claims to have seen him.

On September 12, 2014, about 10.15am, William went missing from the home in Kendall on NSW's mid north coast when he went to play in the yard.

Now, on the anniversary of the disappearance, police have launched a new hotline directly into the coroner's office, which is investigating.

But journalist Caroline Overington, who has closely followed the case and started the podcast Nowhere Child, has now spoken on William's foster mother publicly attacking police, saying they don't have any real leads.

"The investigation is now five years old and they don't have any real leads and there is no forensic evidence collected," she told Seven's Sunrise on Thursday.

"No trace of William has been found - not even a shoe or a hair or any sign that he was ever really here, and that is frustrating.

"But the police can't always tell you what they're doing.

"They always have something going on in the background."

In the beginning, I didn't even think the family was involved. Wow.

William Tyrrell’s foster mother charged with giving misleading evidence

The foster mother of missing child William Tyrrell provided a NSW Crime Commission hearing about the boy’s disappearance with false or misleading information, police have alleged.

On Thursday, detectives from strike force Rosann – which was established to investigate Tyrrell’s disappearance – issued a 56-year-old woman with a court attendance notice.

The woman – understood to be Tyrrell’s foster mother – will have her matter heard at Sydney’s Downing Centre local court on 24 May.

In a statement released on Thursday, NSW police said the woman was charged with knowingly giving false or misleading evidence.

Guardian Australia understands this occurred at a hearing before the NSW Crime Commission – a body that works alongside police to investigate serious crimes.

“She remains before the courts,” the police statement said. “Investigations under strike force Rosann continue.”

William Tyrrell’s foster parents facing trial for alleged assault on different child

The foster parents of William Tyrrell will face up to 10 prosecution witnesses and surveillance footage when a case unrelated to the missing Sydney boy goes to trial.

Evidence related to the prosecution of William’s foster parents over the alleged assault and stalking of another child, as well their identities, are not able to be published under a gag order seeking to protect the administration of justice.

The pair have entered not guilty pleas to charges of common assault and stalking.

On Friday, a brief mention at Hornsby Local Court was told that the matter would next be listed on May 13 at Parramatta, where a hearing date would be fixed.

Assaulting and stalking ANOTHER child??!!!

EXCLUSIVE: The William Tyrrell foster mother files: Why the missing boy's female carer fought so hard to keep the truth secret - as wealthy couple faces court on child assault charges

William Tyrrell's foster mother fought to keep secret the truth about the missing toddler, arguing that revealing he was a foster child would intensify publicity and force her family into hiding.

The now 57-year-old was part of the court battle waged to keep a veil of secrecy over William's foster status in the years after he vanished without trace.

Daily Mail Australia has obtained an affidavit written by the foster mother two years after William vanished from her mother's house in the NSW Mid North Coast town of Kendall on September 12, 2014.

In the document designed to keep William's foster care past under wraps, the foster mother claimed disclosure 'will lead to intense interest from the public and a much larger number of people will learn William was in foster care'.

This was despite the fact the foster mother and father were actively engaged in the massive 'Where's William' publicity crusade with former lead detective Gary Jubelin.

Police informant to give evidence in trial of William Tyrrell's foster mother

A police informant will be called as a witness during a two-day court hearing for William Tyrrell's foster mother, who denies giving misleading or false information to the NSW Crime Commission.

The charges relate to evidence the 56-year-old gave during a hearing into William's disappearance from his foster grandmother's home.

William was last seen at the property at Kendall, on the NSW Mid-North Coast, in September 2014.

The foster mother, who cannot be identified, did not appear during a brief mention of her case at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court.

Police Prosecutor Amin Assaad told the court it would be a "voluminous" matter.

"We anticipate calling one witness, that's the police informant," he said.

The hearing will involve about 500 pages of evidence and transcript from the Crime Commission, and possibly some audio recordings of the commission, the magistrate was told.

Explosive new details emerge about William Tyrrell's foster parents as couple are accused of kicking a girl and hitting her with a wooden spoon

Explosive new details have surfaced about William Tyrrell's foster parents who are accused of grabbing a girl around the neck, kicking her, and hitting her with a wooden spoon.

The allegations have emerged after lawyers acting for Australian media organisations were successful in appealing a suppression order on the proceedings.

Until now, the media was forbidden to report on any of the allegations police will make against the couple after they were charged with the assault of the girl last November. The couple have pleaded not guilty to the alleged assault.

In November 2021, William's foster mother, referred to as SD, was charged with two counts of staking and intimidation and a further assault charge while William's foster father, referred to as JS, was charged with one count of stalking and intimidation.

A hearing scheduled for June 30 will decide if the charges laid against William's foster mother will be dealt with on mental health grounds.

According to a psychologist's report tendered as part of the appeal of the suppression order, the couple had been 'attempting to intervene in the (alleged) victim's problematic behaviour', The Australian reports.

The report refers to police facts from November 2021 which alleged SD kicked the girl and caused her 'pain and bruising' and allegedly hit her with a wooden spoon.

JS is alleged to have 'grabbed' the alleged victim's neck and physically restrained her following a 'time-out' period that lasted 44 minutes which concluded with the child telling the pair that she 'hated them'.

Police will allege the child yelled out in pain, with SD then alleged to have forced her to remain seated for an extended period of time.

Police will allege SD then kicked the girl causing her pain and bruising and forced her to sit down several times after she made attempts to stand up.

The report states police will allege the child pleaded with SD to let her go but instead received a 'tirade of verbal abuse' that lasted up to 15 minutes.

In additional facts provided by police it was alleged the girl expressed to her schoolteacher that she felt afraid to return home.

'Further, the facts note that SD suggests to the child that if the (child) was to defecate on the floor, she would rub the child's face in it,' the report states.

Great parenting and techniques to correct the "problem" behavior of the child. Yeah, it is the child with the problem. I don't think so.

This is one case from the start I never believed William was abducted and it "smelled" to me like the "parents". I'm sadly not surprised that they now have charges relating to another child.

Disgusting any were still in their care. Such a world this is sometimes. :(

Why is this just coming out now? Why didn’t they know this before?

William's 11th birthday marked by police

NSW police are marking what would have been the 11th birthday of William Tyrrell, as the force continues to attempt to crack the case of the missing boy.

A high-profile search for the body of the missing toddler in Kendall wrapped up last December without any obvious breakthroughs but detectives are not giving up.

"The NSW Police Force remains committed to finding William Tyrrell and investigations by the Homicide Squad's Strike Force Rosann are ongoing," the force said in a statement on Sunday.

"Strike force detectives are continuing to conduct interviews and other investigative activity, including those under Coronial Orders, as well as reviewing all material with the assistance of various experts."

A $1 million reward for information leading to William's recovery still stands.

‘Active and ongoing’: Investigation continues into missing boy William Tyrrell

NSW Police are still committed to uncovering what happened to William Tyrrell after the young boy vanished in the state’s mid-north coast eight years ago.

Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty released a statement on the investigation on Monday – the anniversary of his disappearance.

He said their investigations are ongoing and they are continuing to prepare a brief for the coroner.

“Every effort is – and should be – channelled toward finding William Tyrrell,” he said.

“The Homicide Squad’s Strike Force Rosann is continuing to prepare a brief for the information of the Coroner for the purpose of determining what happened to William eight years ago today (Friday 12 September 2014).

“Our investigation is very much active and ongoing, and while I won’t go into specifics, I can assure the community that various activities, including those under Coronial Orders, are being undertaken every day.

“We are working with a large volume of information, and it is necessary to methodically explore and exhaust every line of inquiry; and that is a protracted process.

“This is all for William, and if it takes time and effort to get it right, it’s worth it.”

“While (Monday) will mark eight years of deep sadness for William’s loved ones, it will also mark eight years of never giving up hope that the next phone call will bring the news they have longed for - that William has been found. William, we will never give up!”

Detective says William Tyrrell's foster mother knows where missing boy is

A senior detective has told a court he believes the former foster mother of missing boy William Tyrrell knows where he is.

The woman appeared in court on Thursday, accused of lying to the NSW Crime Commission.

"I have formed the view (she) knows where William Tyrrell is," Detective Sergeant Andrew Lonergan told Downing Centre Local Court.

Police charged her for allegedly lying in an attempt to pressure her, he said.

"You are hoping to break her spirit," Stratton suggested.

"Our main objective is to find out where William Tyrrell is," Lonergan replied.

And why do they tell the world he is hoping to break her spirit, thereby letting her know that too. More pressure maybe?

I have always thought in this one they did it. Both the foster situation and the story. Didn't wash well for me.

State of NSW to fight $1.5m payout awarded to former William Tyrrell suspect

A landmark judgment of a $1.5 million payout in damages to a former suspect in the disappearance of NSW toddler William Tyrrell has been challenged.

In December, washing machine repairman Bill Spedding was awarded the money after being maliciously prosecuted by NSW Police as they searched for the three-year-old, who disappeared from a home in Kendall in September 2014.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Ian Harrison ordered that the State of NSW pay the 71-year-old $1.48 million plus interest after he was charged with historical child sex offences by police during their search for William.

The judge found the accusations brought against Spedding in 2015 were "concocted and false and could not be supported" and were made for the collateral purpose of furthering the investigation into William's location.

"I am satisfied that the institution and maintenance of the criminal prosecution was malicious. It was borne of malice directed to Mr Spedding and unrelated to the proper pursuit of the criminal law," Harrison said.

The State of NSW is now fighting the judge's findings in the NSW Court of Appeal.

On William Tyrrell's 12th birthday, police remain tight-lipped on one theory

William Tyrrell would have been 12 years old today, on the cusp of entering his teens and high school.

Instead, he remains frozen in time — a cheeky three-year-old boy who loved Spider-man and drawing pictures.

In a statement today, NSW Police said the "determination of strike force detectives has never wavered as they continue to meticulously explore and exhaust every line of inquiry".

"As another of William Tyrrell's birthdays comes and goes – on what should be a happy occasion – the NSW Police Force continues to actively and vigorously search for answers into his disappearance," the statement said.

In the meantime, there has still been no word on when the coronial inquest will resume or when Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame will hand down her findings, more than four years after she began hearing evidence.

While police say the investigation remains active, it seems any confidence they had in 2021 of an imminent arrest has dissipated, with their latest statement once again putting the focus back on the coronial inquest.

"State Crime Command's Homicide Squad continues to prepare information for the coronial inquest in an effort to determine what happened to William nine years ago under Strike Force Rosann," the statement said.

BREAKING: Detectives recommend William Tyrrell’s foster mother be charged

Detectives now believe there’s enough evidence to charge the foster mother of William Tyrrell, over his 2014 disappearance.

Police have handed a brief to the Director of Public Prosecutions this month, which recommends she be charged with perverting the course of justice and interfering with a corpse.

William Tyrell’s foster mother has always denied any involvement in his disappearance. It remains up to the DPP to advise on whether the case is pursued in court.

Police allege William Tyrrell’s foster mum covered up death, seek charges

Police have recommended prosecutors criminally charge William Tyrrell’s foster mother, alleging she covered up his accidental death almost a decade ago.

However, her lawyer was not even aware of the development on Tuesday night, which comes just one day after what would have been William’s 12th birthday.

Detectives from Rosann this month handed a brief of evidence to the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which recommends William’s foster mother should be charged with perverting the course of justice and interfering with a corpse.

The foster mother has never been charged for William’s death and there is no suggestion of her guilt.

Her lawyer, Sharon Ramsden, told the Herald she had not been advised that police had recommended charges. She will write to police on Wednesday seeking confirmation.

The DPP will be asked to decide whether detectives have unearthed sufficient evidence to justify charging the foster mother.

Prosecutors will need to be satisfied there is a reasonable prospect of conviction on the evidence and the prosecution is in the public interest.

William Tyrrell's foster mother demands to see all evidence against her after police recommend charges

The foster mother of William Tyrrell is calling for police to disclose all evidence they have against her after a brief recommending criminal charges was handed to prosecutors.

In a statement provided to the ABC, the foster mother's lawyer said detectives failed to inform her or her client about the development before it became public last night.

Lawyer Sharon Ramsden said she had now sought confirmation from police that the brief had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

"The foster mother and her legal representatives call for disclosure of the evidence which police suggest forms the basis of any criminal proceedings," the statement said.

"To date, William’s body has never been found. The foster mother has always, and maintains, she has nothing to do with William’s disappearance.

"She desperately urges the police to resume the investigation into finding out what happened to William."

Ms Ramsden urged the DPP to "expeditiously determine" whether the foster mother would be charged.

It's been awhile but I have followed at length other cases in australia. Their legal system operates in a different way than ours. Some similiarities but a lot of differences. I can say I am not impressed in recent years with either.

Anyhow, in short, jmo and only imo, I have always felt the foster mother to be a liar. I have always felt he "disappeared" or died at the hands of who he was with. Granted my feelings over what we heard in the beginning until now aren't proof but that is just the bit we saw, I would hope they have more and can make a very good case.

I guess we will see.

It is encouraging to see a case of a little boy who was a foster child hasn't been ignored and is still very much on the burner. Whether it would be or it is public interest or real concern of LE that has it there all these years later, it is hard to say.
