WEST HAVEN JANE DOE: WF, 18-30, found near water processing plant in West Haven, CT - 20 April 1979 SZJkFNP

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – It’s been more than three decades since a woman’s body was found on water company property off Route 34 on April 20, 1979.

But police Tuesday released a forensic artist’s rendering of the woman, giving new life to the cold case.

“It’s always rewarding, especially on a case like this where you don’t have a lot of leads, or it’s so old to be able to get that aha moment,” said Peter Massy, who teaches forensic science at the University of New Haven.

The woman, who was white, was believed to be in her late teens or early 20s at the time of her death, police said.

Massey said much can be learned from the skeletal remains, even though they may have been there possibly eight years before they were discovered in 1979.

“By knowing the skull shape and the structure,” he said, “they can start to determine the race, male, female, different structures, age.”

It may not be an exact likeness but it should resemble the woman. Here’s more information about her:

She was 5-foot-1 to 5-foot-3 tall, had periodontal disease, several fillings and all wisdom teeth were congenitally missing. She may have also had congenitally missing lower vertebra and may have had arthritis and lower back pain. She was found with only a black laced bra and a folding travel alarm clock in hard red case.

Police are hoping that someone does have one of those aha moments and can help identify this woman. From there, police may finally be able to reconstruct what happened.

WEST HAVEN >> Police are hoping an image recently completed by forensic artists using facial reconstruction will help them identify a woman found dead 35 years ago in the New Haven Water Company property off Route 34 and allow detectives to close the cold case.

The woman is described as white and was estimated to be in her late teens to early 20s, police spokesman Sgt. David Tammaro said Tuesday. She was about 5 feet 1 inches to 5 feet 3 inches tall. The woman’s body was found April 20, 1979 adjacent to Route 34 (Derby Avenue). She had been dead for between one to eight years when she was found, according to police.

“We don’t have anything conclusive that may describe her manner of death,” Tammaro said. “We’re trying to identify her because we would like to close the case and notify any next of kin. If someone could identify her, we could develop leads and find out how she got to West Haven and possibly find a suspect.”

Police said the woman had periodontal disease and several fillings in her teeth. All of her wisdom teeth were congenitally missing. She may have had a missing lower vertebra, police said, and may also have had arthritis that would have caused some lower back pain.

Police said the facial reconstruction is an example of what she may have looked like.

The only clothing item found with her was a black lace bra. Also with her was a folding travel alarm clock in a hard red case.

Because of her advanced stage of decomposition, Tammaro said police are unable to determine her hair and eye colors and cause of death.

Tammaro said no missing persons descriptions and reports in recent years matched that of the found body.

“Detectives have been working on the case since the body was found and it was passed to different detectives over the years as the case went cold,” Tammaro said. “Detectives were in the area as recently as October because new bones were discovered and were determined to belong to the girl.”

The facial reconstruction was created by forensic artists at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

See the poster created by the NCMEC here.

Tammaro said the department is appealing to the help of the public to identify her. Police ask that anyone with information call the West Haven Police Department at 203-937-3900. Anyone providing information can do so anonymously, Tammaro said.

Did a Murderer of Two Have Even More Victims ?

Hadden Clark was an oddity in life, he never could find the right path. Instead he turned to one of evil and in separate instances brutally murdered 6 year old Michelle Dorr and 23 year old Laura Houghteling who both lived in the state of Maryland.

Clark admitted to the two slayings that occurred in Maryland and has told Law Enforcement that he has committed up to eleven more woman and girls across the Atlantic states. Law Enforcement in different states originally took the claims seriously.

In an odd twist that would be seen in most movies and TV shows. Clark and an inmate that he befriended were taken out to spots where Clark had claimed to bury more victims in the nineteen seventies and eighties.

The properties he showed them were on or near where relatives of his had homes at one time. Clark thought of his inmate friend as "Jesus Christ" and Clark himself was a cross dresser.

Law Enforcement were taken to locations on Wellfleet, Massachusetts on the Cape area of the state as well as the allegedly haunted West Peak mountain in Meriden. No bodies were found. Police began to doubt Clark and his visits to sites were stopped as he was deemed an escape threat.

To this day, Clark has also claimed to be the killer of an Unidentified woman in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1974 called "The Lady of the Dunes". She was estimated to be around 145 pounds and 5 feet, six inches tall. She had long auburn or reddish hair that was tied in a ponytail with an elastic barrette. However, another convicted serial killer is also rumored to have killed her. Notorious Boston Gangster, James "Whitey" Bulger.

WEST HAVEN JANE DOE: WF, 18-30, found near water processing plant in West Haven, CT - 20 April 1979 23708

While Clark may have lead the police to spots where there were no bodies, he is an admitted and proven killer. He should still be taken seriously. His two victims were known and reported immediately missing. His other victims could be transients and never reported as missing persons.

One possible victim of a serial killer in Connecticut (Hadden Clark or not) could be that of an unidentified white female found in 1979 on property owned by the New Haven Water Company property which is next to Route 34/Derby Avenue. They estimate that she was between the ages 18 and 25. She was also missing her wisdom teeth congenitally missing and some fillings in others. She may had arthritis due to a possible missing vertebrae in her back. If you think you know who this woman is please call the West Haven, Connecticut Police Department at 1-203-937-3900 or the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner 1-860-679-3980.

WEST HAVEN — Police said they are “very close” to identifying a woman found dead in April 1979 and appealed to the public for help in collecting donations to solve the 40-year-old case.

In an email Wednesday morning, West Haven police Sgt. Patrick Buturla shared the woman’s page on DNASolves, a genetic database that uses crowdfunding, volunteered data and science to help law enforcement agencies with unsolved cases.

“DNASolves relies on donations from people like you to solve cases nobody else can,” Buturla said. “Every donation helps a family get the closure they deserve.”

In April 1979, skeletal remains were found on the property of the New Haven Water Company adjacent to Route 34 and Derby Avenue in New Haven County, Connecticut. Investigators determined that the skeletal remains were that of a Caucasian woman estimated to be in her late teens to early twenties. The unidentified woman stood between 5’1” and 5’3” in height during her life. Investigators were unable to make definitive determinations about the woman’s weight, hair color, or eye color during her life. It is believed that the decedent had been deceased for one to eight years upon discovery of her remains.

Since the discovery of the woman’s remains more than 44 years ago, law enforcement investigators have diligently pursued various leads about her identity, but none have returned a match for her identity. Two years following the discovery of the remains, a mandible was located which investigators associated with the woman’s remains found in 1979. Later, a facial reconstruction was created to depict what the woman might have looked like. Along with the discovery of the unknown woman’s remains, investigators also recovered a black lace bra, and a “Westclox” brand folding travel alarm clock in a hard red case. Investigators located a replica of the alarm clock, which has been provided for reference, although they noted that the actual clock may have differed somewhat from the replica. Finally, in May 2008, the case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as case number UP9236. Many leads were followed in the case, but in spite of exhaustive efforts, the woman could not be identified.

In 2022, Medicolegal Death Investigator Michelle Clark partnered with Othram to use Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to develop a comprehensive DNA profile for the unknown woman, in order to generate leads to her identity. The case is part of a broader collaboration between the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and Othram, aimed at solving the backlog of cold cases in Connecticut. Othram scientists built the comprehensive DNA profile and Othram's in-house genetic genealogy team used the profile to develop investigative leads that were returned to law enforcement.

In a follow up investigation by law enforcement, the West Haven Police Department confirmed that remains found in 1979 belonged to Sarah Tatham Abbott, also affectionately known as “Sally” by her family. She was born August 3, 1940, in Manhattan, New York. Ms. Abbott was only 29-years-old at the time of her disappearance from New Haven in July 1970. The investigation into the death of Ms. Abbott did not yield any definitive conclusions with regard to her manner and cause of death, which after consulting with the State of Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, will remain undetermined. Anyone who may have information pertaining to Ms. Abbott is asked to contact the West Haven Police Department Investigative Services Division at 203-937-3905.

This case was funded through a DNASolves crowdfund and we are grateful to everyone that contributed towards the costs of Othram's testing in the case. The West Haven Police Department would like to thank the various agencies and entities that have assisted in this investigation throughout the years, including the State of Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Regional Water Authority, and multiple generations of West Haven Police officers, for their commitment and unwavering efforts to identify this young woman over the past 44 years. If nothing else, the identification of Ms. Abbott brings closure to a family that has been “searching for sally” for over half a century.

So she wasn't heard from since 1970. So I'm not sure how "Hadden Clark" Would fit into that. I'll look. I'm guessing it will exclude him. I read his diary. Very, Very, Sick. I'm not sure you can anymore. Yes he killed at least one woman I can think of. But he preyed on very young girls. Whoever did it didn't deserve to breathe one more day. How horrible waiting all that time. But some families never get an answer. Now I would think they will now be haunted by who killed her. I hate to say they likely will never know. But not found until 9 yrs later. And mandible 2 yrs after that. That's horrific. Whoever did it wanted to make sure she was never found. They did a good job of enough time passing. I would say the perpetrator is no longer alive. My mom was born the same year as her. And would be 83 now. The perpetrator. They are usually in that age range. Even if dead. Finding the answer to her killer's identity would at least put an end to wondering. The question of why is irrelevant to not drive yourself crazy. Even if they were to answer. The answer wouldn't be sufficient. It's an inexcusable reason.
