Foul play suspected in the disappearance of two Kansas women whose vehicle was found in Oklahoma

Foul play is suspected in the disappearance of two Kansas women whose vehicle was found abandoned in the Oklahoma Panhandle last weekend, authorities said Friday.

Veronica Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39, of Hugoton, Kansas, were driving to Oklahoma to pick up Butler’s children to attend a March 30 birthday party in Kansas but never showed up, Tom Singer, the pastor of the church Butler attended, told KOCO-TV.

Hunter McKee, an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesperson, said investigators believe foul play led to women’s disappearance based on what was found their vehicle.

McKee declined to say what evidence was found in the vehicle, citing the continuing investigation.

The sheriff’s office has turned the investigation over to the OSBI.

“We’re still looking into where and when they were last seen,” McKee said.

McKee said no children are missing.

Investigators are searching the area in Texas County around where the vehicle was found, according to McKee, about 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of Elkhart, Kansas, on the Oklahoma-Kansas state line.

Can I say I can’t believe it’s been two years already? Seems like this case should be six months old.

Two years pass since bodies of Kansas mothers were found in Oklahoma Panhandle

It has been two years since four people were arrested after two Kansas mothers went missing in the Oklahoma Panhandle.

Monday marked the second anniversary of the four suspects' arrests. A fifth suspect would later be arrested.

Tuesday will be two years since the bodies of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley were found in Texas County following their disappearance while traveling to pick up Butler’s children.

The woman charged with orchestrating their murders was sentenced to prison in February, but the case isn't over.

"I mean, you go to the store and people are talking about it," Veronica Butler’s aunt, Ladonna Thompson, said. “I remember staying optimistic for those two weeks until we had been told that she had been found, and they were no longer with us."

The woman charged with orchestrating the murders, Tifany Adams, pleaded no contest and was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year. Adams, the paternal grandmother of Butler’s children, reportedly worried she would lose custody of them.

Four other suspects—Paul Grice, Cora Twombly, Tad Cullum and Cole Twombly—are still going through court proceedings. Grice and Cora Twombly testified for the state and agreed to plea deals.

Tad Cullum’s jury trial is scheduled for October, while Cole Twombly’s trial is set for February 2027.

Oklahoma Panhandle double-murder suspect seeks dismissal of charges, attorneys say

One of five suspects accused of killing two Kansas women in 2024 and disposing of their bodies in the Oklahoma Panhandle is requesting that a judge drop all charges against him.

Tad Cullum is facing the death penalty for the deaths of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley, who were traveling into Oklahoma to pick up Butler’s children when investigators say Cullum and four others abducted and killed the two women.

Now, Cullum’s attorneys are asking for his charges to be dropped due to a reported violation of a gag order surrounding the case. Cullum’s defense team alleges Texas County District Attorney George Buddy Leach violated the gag order by releasing a blog post about the murders.

A hearing on the motion is set for the end of July.
