10-year-old Oregon girl kidnapped from home in middle of the night, then found alive, tied up in closet

A 10-year-old girl who was abducted from her apartment in Canby, Oregon, in the middle of the night was found safe hours later on Wednesday. A suspect is in custody, authorities said.

"She is safe and sound," Canby Police Chief Jose Gonzalez said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference.

The U.S. Marshals Service said the girl was found about 13 hours later, tied up in a closet at a residence in Oregon City, about 10 miles away. A SWAT team took the suspect, Vince Edgar Chavez, into custody after they said he tried to escape out the back of the home.

"Very early this morning, a family's worst nightmare happened," said Chris Owens, chief deputy district attorney for Clackamas County. "A young child was taken by force. Her sister was viciously assaulted."

After she was rescued, the kidnapped girl was taken to the hospital.

According to Oregon State Police dispatch audio available through OpenMHz, a dispatcher reported that a man struck a 12-year-old girl in the head with what appeared to be a hammer and fled with a 10-year-old girl in a white van. The 12-year-old girl was taken to a hospital, where she remained Wednesday afternoon.

Police have not released any information about the suspect's connection to the family or why the girl was targeted. They also have not released how they found the suspect.

They found her within the first 24 hours! I’m so happy they were able to find her. We don’t get breaks like this very often.

I want to know what else the suspect has been up to. There were too many moving pieces in this case to make me believe this was his first rodeo.

And I wonder if someone’s camera picked him up? I know that in my neighborhood, pretty much everybody has cameras on their houses these days.

Man held without bail after violent kidnapping, sexual assault of 10-year-old Canby girl

An Oregon City man will be held without bail after his first court appearance Thursday for the violent home invasion, abduction and sexual abuse of a 10-year-old Canby girl.

Vince Edgar Chavez, 35, is accused of entering the girl's Canby apartment in the early hours of Wednesday morning, striking her 12-year-old sister with a hammer "numerous times," knocking the older girl unconscious, then taking the 10-year-old to a residence in Oregon City.

Officers with the U.S. Marshals Service-led Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force responded to Chavez's location Wednesday afternoon, where prosecutors say officers found the girl duct-taped in a duffel bag and stashed inside a closet. Chavez was apprehended trying to escape out the back, the Marshals said.

Court documents reveal that between the abduction and his arrest that afternoon, Chavez is alleged to have subjected the girl to sexual abuse under threat of violence with the same hammer he's accused of using to assault her sister.

Prosecutors said Thursday afternoon that the suspect may have had a connection to the family, but they cannot classify it as a targeted attack. Investigators did not find evidence of forced entry.

Roommate of man accused of kidnapping 10-year-old: ‘We knew nothing … now we’re haunted by it’

Colin Williams returned home Wednesday from his garbage truck route at about 1:40 p.m. and jumped in the shower to clean up before taking his wife out for her birthday. Without warning, what sounded like an explosion rattled the house.

He turned off the water to the sound of shattering glass and watched smoke seep into the second-floor bathroom.

“I’m naked, getting out of the shower, dripping with soap,” he recalled.

He pushed his dog into the bathroom, turned around and found himself staring down the barrels of roughly seven rifles held by armored police officers ordering him to the ground.

“I didn’t do anything! I don’t know what this is!” he recalled screaming, before he and his wife were cuffed and escorted from the home.

The couple said it quickly became clear to them that officers were focused on their roommate, 35-year-old Vince Edgar Chavez. Under questioning at the Oregon City police department, an investigator told Williams that officers had found a 10-year-old girl bound and hidden in his roommate’s closet.

Williams said he broke down in tears, shocked that a girl could have been captive in his home without his knowledge.

The girl, authorities say, had been kidnapped from her Canby apartment in the predawn hours Wednesday, setting off an hourslong search. During the abduction, the girl’s older sister had been hit repeatedly in the head with a hammer, knocking her unconscious.

Authorities tracked the suspect’s white van and pinged his cell phone. As they surrounded the Oregon City home about 2:45 p.m., Chavez jumped from the window of his second-floor bathroom in the house he shared with Williams. He was caught and arrested.

“If I could have done anything about it, I would have done something about it. I didn’t hear a peep,” Williams told The Oregonian/OregonLive in an interview Friday. “Yeah, that’s a regret I have.”

Chavez made his first appearance by video in Clackamas County Circuit Court on Thursday. He faces 10 felony allegations, including first-degree kidnapping, attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, first-degree burglary, first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of first-degree sodomy and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. He’s being held without bail and is due back in court next Thursday.

I feel bad for the roommate and his wife!

I saw someone post on a local social media platform and they were asking somebody to please let them spend the night at their house. Just one night. They were posting anonymously and someone asked to see a picture of the person and the person got all indignant about it. Well, it’s a wild world out there! I wouldn’t let some stranger in my house, even if I saw a picture of them! And this is one of the reasons! Because there’s so much homelessness in Oregon, we are asked often to open our homes to a roommate. No way! I’m not going to put myself in that position. Here’s a case where it was a man and a woman and still - evil came into their house!

Thank God the mother saw the man and knew who he was!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“The girls were asleep in the living room. [Their mother] was asleep in her bedroom,” said the grandmother.
The grandmother said her daughter, who is the girls’ mother, was asleep in her bedroom with a fan on, but woke up when she heard someone in the living room.
“She came out and she heard a man’s voice... And all she could see was the blood and my granddaughter unconscious,” the grandmother said. “And then it clicked in her mind, ‘Wait a minute, I’ve got another daughter,’ and she looked. And at that time, the guy was taking her out of the house.”
The grandmother added that the girls’ mother saw Chavez’s vehicle outside.
“The van was parked right outside the house,” she said. “That’s how we knew it was a white van.”
According to the grandmother, the girls’ mother knew the man who broke in, having met him through a dating website several months ago.
“She’s just a mom that was on a regular website — Cupid — and she met him (Chavez) and his daughter,” the grandmother said.
According to the grandmother, her daughter dated Chavez for two weeks and ended things after she became concerned about his motives.
“He showed interest in [the 10-year-old] and she told him she didn’t want to see him anymore,” the grandmother said.
According to law enforcement, the girls’ mother was home at the time of the alleged assault and kidnapping and called 911.

Suspect in Canby kidnapping held without bail after arraignment on 11 felonies
The man accused of kidnapping a 10-year-old girl from her Canby home is staying in jail without bail.

Vince Chavez appeared in state court for an arraignment on 11 felony charges. He is also facing federal charges related to the case.

Investigators believe the door to the 10-year-old girl’s home was unlocked when she was taken on Oct. 28. Authorities accuse Chavez of taking her to a home in Oregon City and sexually assaulting her. Police say they found the girl tied up inside a duffel bag in a closet.

Chavez faces charges that include kidnapping, sex abuse, strangulation and attempted murder.

KATU previously reported that a former partner of Chavez helped authorities track him down. On Thursday, Clackamas County Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Owens confirmed that Chavez briefly dated the girl’s mother. Owens said the relationship ended in April.

Chavez is also accused of hitting the girl’s 12-year-old sister over the head with a hammer. The sister suffered a traumatic brain injury, and the long-term effects are unclear, Owens said. She has been released from the hospital.

The 12-year-old was in the bedroom where the younger girl was taken. Owens said she may be interviewed again as part of the investigation.

“She is going to be undergoing additional interviewing, assuming that she's up for it and medically able, and if there's additional information that we get from that interview, then we will address that with further charges,” Owens said.

The sex offense charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years if Chavez is convicted, Owens said.

A judge will decide whether to set bail for Chavez at a hearing scheduled for Dec. 1.

Seems like he was on the hunt for women that have young daughters for access to the young daughters.

It said he’d “shown interest in” the child. Not a far leap to imagine he’d done it before too. Sick POS.
