10-year-old Oregon girl kidnapped from home in middle of the night, then found alive, tied up in closet

A 10-year-old girl who was abducted from her apartment in Canby, Oregon, in the middle of the night was found safe hours later on Wednesday. A suspect is in custody, authorities said.

"She is safe and sound," Canby Police Chief Jose Gonzalez said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference.

The U.S. Marshals Service said the girl was found about 13 hours later, tied up in a closet at a residence in Oregon City, about 10 miles away. A SWAT team took the suspect, Vince Edgar Chavez, into custody after they said he tried to escape out the back of the home.

"Very early this morning, a family's worst nightmare happened," said Chris Owens, chief deputy district attorney for Clackamas County. "A young child was taken by force. Her sister was viciously assaulted."

After she was rescued, the kidnapped girl was taken to the hospital.

According to Oregon State Police dispatch audio available through OpenMHz, a dispatcher reported that a man struck a 12-year-old girl in the head with what appeared to be a hammer and fled with a 10-year-old girl in a white van. The 12-year-old girl was taken to a hospital, where she remained Wednesday afternoon.

Police have not released any information about the suspect's connection to the family or why the girl was targeted. They also have not released how they found the suspect.

They found her within the first 24 hours! I’m so happy they were able to find her. We don’t get breaks like this very often.

I want to know what else the suspect has been up to. There were too many moving pieces in this case to make me believe this was his first rodeo.

And I wonder if someone’s camera picked him up? I know that in my neighborhood, pretty much everybody has cameras on their houses these days.

Man held without bail after violent kidnapping, sexual assault of 10-year-old Canby girl

An Oregon City man will be held without bail after his first court appearance Thursday for the violent home invasion, abduction and sexual abuse of a 10-year-old Canby girl.

Vince Edgar Chavez, 35, is accused of entering the girl's Canby apartment in the early hours of Wednesday morning, striking her 12-year-old sister with a hammer "numerous times," knocking the older girl unconscious, then taking the 10-year-old to a residence in Oregon City.

Officers with the U.S. Marshals Service-led Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force responded to Chavez's location Wednesday afternoon, where prosecutors say officers found the girl duct-taped in a duffel bag and stashed inside a closet. Chavez was apprehended trying to escape out the back, the Marshals said.

Court documents reveal that between the abduction and his arrest that afternoon, Chavez is alleged to have subjected the girl to sexual abuse under threat of violence with the same hammer he's accused of using to assault her sister.

Prosecutors said Thursday afternoon that the suspect may have had a connection to the family, but they cannot classify it as a targeted attack. Investigators did not find evidence of forced entry.

Roommate of man accused of kidnapping 10-year-old: ‘We knew nothing … now we’re haunted by it’

Colin Williams returned home Wednesday from his garbage truck route at about 1:40 p.m. and jumped in the shower to clean up before taking his wife out for her birthday. Without warning, what sounded like an explosion rattled the house.

He turned off the water to the sound of shattering glass and watched smoke seep into the second-floor bathroom.

“I’m naked, getting out of the shower, dripping with soap,” he recalled.

He pushed his dog into the bathroom, turned around and found himself staring down the barrels of roughly seven rifles held by armored police officers ordering him to the ground.

“I didn’t do anything! I don’t know what this is!” he recalled screaming, before he and his wife were cuffed and escorted from the home.

The couple said it quickly became clear to them that officers were focused on their roommate, 35-year-old Vince Edgar Chavez. Under questioning at the Oregon City police department, an investigator told Williams that officers had found a 10-year-old girl bound and hidden in his roommate’s closet.

Williams said he broke down in tears, shocked that a girl could have been captive in his home without his knowledge.

The girl, authorities say, had been kidnapped from her Canby apartment in the predawn hours Wednesday, setting off an hourslong search. During the abduction, the girl’s older sister had been hit repeatedly in the head with a hammer, knocking her unconscious.

Authorities tracked the suspect’s white van and pinged his cell phone. As they surrounded the Oregon City home about 2:45 p.m., Chavez jumped from the window of his second-floor bathroom in the house he shared with Williams. He was caught and arrested.

“If I could have done anything about it, I would have done something about it. I didn’t hear a peep,” Williams told The Oregonian/OregonLive in an interview Friday. “Yeah, that’s a regret I have.”

Chavez made his first appearance by video in Clackamas County Circuit Court on Thursday. He faces 10 felony allegations, including first-degree kidnapping, attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, first-degree burglary, first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of first-degree sodomy and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. He’s being held without bail and is due back in court next Thursday.

I feel bad for the roommate and his wife!

I saw someone post on a local social media platform and they were asking somebody to please let them spend the night at their house. Just one night. They were posting anonymously and someone asked to see a picture of the person and the person got all indignant about it. Well, it’s a wild world out there! I wouldn’t let some stranger in my house, even if I saw a picture of them! And this is one of the reasons! Because there’s so much homelessness in Oregon, we are asked often to open our homes to a roommate. No way! I’m not going to put myself in that position. Here’s a case where it was a man and a woman and still - evil came into their house!
