Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

Yeah this was in the video recap I posted. My first instinct would be the defense as imo they are desperate. But hard to say. If Dateline approached someone on either side...

I think I am the one who brought up the dateline thing here if I recall but I don't get it or have access. So I knew it was coming but haven't seen it. Who is Ken Mains? This case has had a lot going on but all have been on Daybell and Read.
Ken Mains was a phenomenal homicide investigator and now works for himself on cold cases and such. He's revisted lots and lots of famous cases like zodiac

Had no idea who Ken Mains was.

I can say I go back and forth on shows and things like Dateline. I was not a fan of them airing a show about Lori right before her trial started in Daybell. Keith got nothing out of her, pressed her not nearly enough and had it made it harder to get a jury pool or more had heard "her story" and so on, not a fan of that. While maybe interesting to any or all of us, I put justice first and they always come like right before a trial. Now had Keith gotten ONE THING that could be used against Lori, well maybe then it would be worth it but he didn't. She controlled it, not him, from all I've heard.

I've watched a few retired cops and such but don't think I've heard of him.

has anyone checked out this whole dateline thing in this case and also that BK apparently watched Ken Mains videos from unsolved no more on youtube so ken mains reached out to ask why??

i'm curious if those of you following closely were aware of any of this...... the dateline thing i noticed on X but ken mains i saw on fb
I watch Ken Mains from time to time and I did see where he stated that he reached out to find out what was going on. I don't think he got an answer, though. And I kinda feel like he won't.

Supposedly I believe it IS in recent court records that he was watching this channel OR it may have been the leak that happened that said as much in the Dateline episode. Not the only thing either...

Kohberger wants trial delayed. So it may not now begin on August 11th. Something leaked apparently.

BOISE (Idaho Statesman) — Attorneys for Bryan Kohberger, the man charged with killing four University of Idaho students, asked the presiding judge to postpone the long-awaited murder trial this summer in Boise, citing disclosure of previously unreleased case details that may have violated the court’s gag order earlier this month in an episode of NBC’s “Dateline.”
Led by attorney Anne Taylor, Kohberger’s public defense team filed Tuesday for the delay, just two months before the scheduled start of jury selection to kick off the trial. The defense’s request, in a 40-page brief that posted to a state courts website Wednesday afternoon, came less than a week after Judge Steven Hippler invited a formal request to consider appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the source of the leaked information.
The legal filing, signed by Taylor, referenced the need to protect Kohberger’s constitutional rights to a fair trial, including to provide enough time for the defense to review all outstanding investigation materials to effectively prepare to defend their client.
“Any conviction and sentence resulting from a capital trial beginning in August 2025 will be unconstitutionally imposed and, therefore, vulnerable to reversal on direct or collateral review,” the filing read. “As detailed in this motion, moving forward with a capital trial in August will infringe upon Mr. Kohberger’s constitutional rights, as counsel requires more time to review discovery, complete investigations, and prepare for trial.”
The defense has yet to file any requests for the appointment of a special prosecutor. Kohberger, 30, is suspected of fatally stabbing the four U of I students in November 2022 at an off-campus home in Moscow. At the time, he was a Ph.D. student in the criminal justice and criminology department at Washington State University in nearby Pullman. Kohberger was arrested in late December 2022 after a nearly seven-week homicide investigation.
The victims were Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene; Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls; and Ethan Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington. The three women lived in the home on King Road in Moscow with two female roommates who went physically unharmed in the attack. Chapin was Kernodle’s boyfriend and stayed over for the night.
Kohberger, who is originally from eastern Pennsylvania, faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. A judge entered not guilty pleas to all charges on his behalf, and his defense has maintained his innocence over more than two years leading up to his high-profile trial, which was moved from Moscow to Boise late last year.
Idaho is one of 27 U.S. states with capital punishment. If a jury finds Kohberger guilty, prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty.
Also Wednesday, attorneys met with Hippler for a closed-door court hearing. Little is known about the remote-only hearing that restricted public access, other than its title: “Discussion regarding the role of victims.”
Besides the prosecution and defense teams, Shanon Gray, attorney for the family of victim Kaylee Goncalves, was listed on a court record as among those invited to attend. Goncalves’ parents, Steve and Kristi, have voiced their frustrations about the length of time before the trial of their daughter’s accused killer.

“One step forward, two steps back. Are we ever going to get there???” the Goncalveses posted to a family Facebook page the day after a public court hearing held last week where Hippler scheduled another pretrial hearing for next month.
At that hearing, Hippler also said he considered the two surviving roommates “technically victims of the burglary.” As such, he will reserve two seats in the courtroom for them each day of the trial, should they choose to attend, and also said he would only broadcast the audio of their expected testimony, rather than video, too, on the court’s livestream of the trial.
“I don’t know whether they would have any desire to be here,” Hippler said. “I suspect not, given the way they’ve been treated in the media. But, if they do, they have seats available.”
Unless Hippler decides otherwise, Kohberger’s trial is set to begin with jury selection in late July, with trial scheduled by Aug. 11 at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise.
“While prompt administration of justice is important — to both the state and Mr. Kohberger — the constitutional guarantee of a fair trial outweighs modest delay,” Taylor wrote. “And, because the majority of cases ending in the death penalty are later overturned for error, the public interest lies in ensuring a fair trial in the first instance.
“A continuance will ensure that Mr. Kohberger’s fundamental constitutional rights are honored, and that any verdict rendered rests on a fair and complete presentation of the facts, not on forced haste.”
Kohberger’s next scheduled court appearance is June 18.

Yeah I saw in something else that he was following this station.
Who knows what is true these days. Anything to get followers IMO. And maybe they can follow from jail these days?

What a coincidence "something leaked" around the time the accused contacted a youtuber......

The article I just posted said something leaked in a Dateline episode. Did anyone watch that?

" citing disclosure of previously unreleased case details that may have violated the court’s gag order earlier this month in an episode of NBC’s “Dateline.” "

I don't have FB so could someone screenshot the FB post?

Don't do it if it violates the gag order though.

Another article. The info was from "anonymous sources" and featured in the 9th May Dateline episode. They should be in trouble for publishing it then. It could jeopardise the whole prosecution.

How easy would it be to scupper your own trial huh?

I don't have FB and did not see Dateline but yeah, they had some details that had not been released so were clear leaks.

For some reason quite a few seem to think it was a P leak or from an LE officer or something on that order. Not sure why that is thought.

Taylor has been trying to get a continuance every which way so just something else for her to try to use but the fact she says the leaks lead to a situation of time and his rights violated would seem to hint it was not from their side, but then why would I believe that? And as it says she has not called for a special prosecutor to investigate such, well why not?

Yeah, I don't know about Dateline sometimes...

Yeah I think it is more than likely it was the D side, P has been circumspect throughout. Jmo. Who does it benefit....?

The judge overseeing the case of Bryan Kohberger, the man charged with the killing of four University of Idaho students, has ruled that only one seat will be reserved for a journalist in his upcoming trial.

Why It Matters

Kohberger, 30, is charged with four counts of murder in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. A judge entered a not-guilty plea on behalf of Kohberger, who remained silent when asked to enter a plea.
A group of media outlets had asked the judge for reserved seating out of concern the court's lottery system for reserving tickets could result in days when no journalist is in the courtroom during the trial.

What To Know

In a ruling on Wednesday, Judge Steven Hippler said providing reserved seating "for endless representatives of various 'media' types... would result in most all the limited available seats being spoken for such that the interested members of the general public are unable to attend."
But he said that since the trial has been transferred hundreds of miles away from where the crime occurred, the citizens of Latah County should have representation. Kohberger's trial was moved from Latah County to Ada County last year after a judge approved the defense's motion for a change of venue.
He wrote that "one pooled seat for a member of Latah County local media of wide circulation will be reserved."

The person using that seat "must agree to act as a pooled journalist" and share coverage with all media outlets, Hippler added.
Other reporters and members of the public will need to use the court's online ticketing system for a chance to attend the trial.
The four University of Idaho students were found fatally stabbed in a rental home near the university's campus in Moscow in the early hours of November 13, 2022.

Kohberger, who was a graduate student at Washington State University in nearby Pullman, Washington, at the time of the slayings, stood silent when asked to enter a plea, prompting a judge to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted.

What People Are Saying

Hippler wrote in his ruling: "The community most impacted by these murders, the citizens of Latah Latah County—also the county financially responsible for the costs of trial are unable to easily attend because the case was transferred to a venue hundreds of miles away. Given this, and in part addressing the broader concern for media attendance expressed in the letters to the Court, one pooled seat for a member of Latah County local media of wide circulation will be reserved."
The Idaho Statesman's editorial board criticized the court's reservation system in an editorial on Tuesday, saying it will mean "legitimate reporters will be subject to the same first-come, first-served system as the general public."

It said, "the best solution at a minimum is to allow at least one pool reporter, who is one trained journalist from a legitimate reputable news outlet, who will report from the courtroom — with a guaranteed seat — each day to provide a written account that is shared with every news outlet. Even better would be a pool reporter along with three or four guaranteed seats for journalists that could be determined by a random lottery system. Whatever system is chosen, the bottom line is that for such an important trial as this, it is vital that the media have a presence in that courtroom each day to relay the events to the public."

What's Next

Kohberger's trial is set to begin on August 11 and run through November 7. Jury selection is to begin on July 30.

Well, I believe in the public having every chance to tor get a seat. Of course vic family seats should be reserved.

His best course would to be ensure this is televised. When all it was was many reporters in Delphi taking notes, most of the news reporters were not coveringly nearly what YTers were like Tom and I think HTC was there, a couple.

they had to wait in line for seats, at least then they can get their early and get one if motivated enough generally. It wasn't very nice but that's how it worked.

an online system who knows.

I'll only say one reporter imo isn't going to give us great or full coverage. Nate plans on covering it, now we have to hope he gets a seat and that they can at least tweet.

It doesn't say they are excluded it sounds like, just not guaranteed seats.

If it's important that the county residents of where it happened get to watch and it's now hundreds of miles away, hopefully it will be live streamed so they CAN see it.
