Update on Tod Motor Doe Status

renderTimingPixel.png

Hey all:
Both u/sonnyphono and I feel like scoundrls for just announcing this case solved and disappearing for a while. However, there's still a lot of moving parts waiting to settle and our priority is being respectful and doing right by TMD's family and everyone who helped us in the investigation.
Over the last 4.5 years investigating this case, Sonny and I have interviewed well over 100 people related to this case, built meaningful relationships with law enforcement, nurtured and relied on confidential informants and had the privilege of working with incredible volunteer researchers, genealogists, archivists, translators. We're trying to figure out the best way to fully tell this story and obviously the wishes of TMD's family take priority.
Sonny and I traveled to Vegas last month to wrap up some aspects of this case. We met with the coroner investigator, visited former employers, landlords and C.I.'s who helped us in the investigation, lightly trespassed at the Tod Motor Motel, which is now boarded up and ghoulish. We sat and drank at a bar where TMD used to drink. We strolled the neighborhood with people who knew him. We found new people in the community who remember him.
A few things we can share at the moment:
  1. TMD was a German-born man who lived the majority of his life in Germany before moving abroad. He had a habit of picking up and leaving -- and I mean truly dropping everything (possessions, employment, relationships) and moving onto to something new. His identity was confirmed via DNA. He was in his mid-40's when he died.
  2. TMD was an incredibly intelligent individual. Sonny and I are still in the process of locating family abroad, but the most common refrain we hear from people who knew him was that he was very smart. He was a skillful, cunning, deeply adaptable person, and it's become very apparent that even in his illicit activities there was a streak of genius.
  3. Sonny and I have been able to confirm three (3) places of residences in the Las Vegas for TMD. We were also able to find evidence of his presence in at least five (5) states. Still, large swatches of his time in America are mysteries. TMD was an incredibly savvy identity thief and we are still trying to make sense of the web he left behind.
  4. Sonny and I were able to discover the exact month and year he arrived to the USA (and under what passport) and we shared that information with the DHS, helping them close up their independant investigation. He came to the United States in the autumn of 2001. However, we have evidence that he visited the USA on the east coast in the early 1990s.
  5. We've had the privilege of getting to know TMD's former wife and daughter, who are incredible, kind, good people. They've shared not only insight about TMD, but former possessions, home videos, photos, even TMD's old report cards from when he was a kid. Through them, we know that TMD has at least two (2) other children on a whole other continent and Sonny and I are in the process of identifying and contacting them.
  6. TMD's laptop -- that famed computer -- was found in storage at the Clark County Coroner's Office after all. How 'bout that? As I write this, the computer is (hopefully) being packed and mailed across the world to TMD's next of kin. What's on it? Well, the letter for one. And potentially a trove of other information. We were informed that the computer isn't working and "flickers on and off", however the hard drive should be fine. Whether that information is shared with Sonny and I is up to TMD's family. It would be nice for our (endlessly burning) curiosity, but it's up to the family.
  7. TMD was a long-haul truck driver. That notion started as a hunch, and then an educated guess, and then a valid assumption based on deduction. And sure enough, it's true. He worked as a long-haul truck driver for a major common carrier, for at least a year before his death. He apparently informed people that he ran routes "a lot to Mexico." It's likely he traveled all over the United States. We were informed by people who knew him abroad that TMD claimed that he always wanted to be a truck driver, as it would provide him an opportunity to see the world.
  8. Remember that access card to a military base? Well, we got more information on that recently. It still may have been a red herring, but it is ******* weirder than you can ever imagine. And now knowing the type of person TMD was, his possession of it raises a million questions.
As I mentioned before, Sonny and I are still attempting to figure out the best way to share information. The more we try to close this case, the more we stumble upon more webwork, more bizarre things and more mysteries TMD left behind. One of the first things told to us by a family member of his was "[TMD] would have absolutely loved that you were attempting to solve his cold case. He had that sort of personality."
For Sonny and I, our goal is to hopefully continue this passion of ours, take on new cases, and help provide closure to grieving and distressed folks. Helping solve this mystery is one of the best things I've ever done in my life. But for right now, we got to see through this one.
Expect more updates soon.

Outside of the Clark County Coroners, my partner and I are the only ones who know his name and background. We are planning to share more about the case including his life story and how we tracked him down but we're not quite done yet. There WILL be an update at some point. Thanks for the support Crimewatchers!

As a matter of fact, yes!

This was TMD's laptop. A Dell Latitude CSx J650XT

According to the coroner's report it was found partially under the bed in room 204 of the Tod Motor Motel. In late December of 2022 the coroner shipped the laptop to TMD's daughter in Perth, Australia. All of his other belongings from the motel room had either been donated to charity or discarded by the time he was identified. This was all that remained of his adventures in the USA.

When we initially inquired about the status of the laptop we were told that it had been lost, then we were told that it was in the hands of the Department Of Homeland Security and eventually that it had been located in storage but was damaged beyond use and would not power up.

It was neither damaged nor non-functional, it just needed a little TLC. Not only did the laptop still contain the infamous message to Birgit but also a wealth of files, notes and emails leading to over 40 geographic locations and all new avenues of inquiry.

This is part of the reason behind the slow release of information. Recovering the laptop sent us into the next phase of the investigation. Instead of answering a question we were asking many more.

Why did he leave Australia? When did he arrive in the states? Where did he travel to? What was he doing? Who were his associates? How did he stay off the radar?

Did investigators think it wouldn't power up? Would they have been able to quickly identify him if it had? WOW.

It's a great question. We know that it was initially powered up because that's where the 'suicide' note that mentioned Birgit, Amy, Karen and Dirk came from. That note turned out to be a draft of an email and not a suicide note at all. Years later when we picked up the investigation we were told that the machine was lost and dead. We can't speak on the initial or subsequent investigations by LE but there was a lot of information to be gleamed by looking very deep into the file structures of the laptop and it seemed to be untouched by any previous investigators.

I'm confused. :) Why is his name being withheld still?

At the request of the family who are people that we now consider friends. After we met their acquaintance they pushed and supported us in further investigating him in order to better understand his means and motives. They are aware of our release of information and we consult with them as we progress.

We the public have to remember that the families of Does did not ask to be thrust into the spotlight as a case is resolved. There have been high profile case solves in the past where the family requested anonymity which was not respected by a few people on the internet who in turn released a name resulting in harrassment and pain for loved ones. We're trying to avoid that while also trying to appease readers who have followed the case over the years.

I don't know that we'll ever release his full name. Lately we've been discussing perhaps only his first name but only when the time is right for his family. I can assure you that the story of his life and times from Germany to Australia and ending in the US far outweighs knowing his full name. After all, this is a man that had clearance to enter Nellis AFB aka Area 51.

Thanks for the question and it is a valid one. Always happy to answer any inquires.

Personally, knowing his name isn’t that important to me. As names are released in these cases, it’s interesting, but the memory of their name fades for me. If other people harass families over it, then just don’t tell us. It’s not worth it! Families have had enough pain.

Well I for one don't get it. If he was assuming other's identities that is illegal.

So with little time I skimmed this but read most posts of less than two pages.

He was either doing illegal things or we are to believe he was some government spy or agent? And if so, then him assuming other Identities is okay> Granted America needs its security and secretes but he was German rightt? Not from here.

And he supposedly committed suicide right? So he is now a dead man for 18 years and from anything I can tell could be a criminal so what's the big secret. And why did he off himself or did he?

Sorry to be contrary but I see absolutely no reason for the cloak and dagger stuff.

Overall I don't believe in secrecy and hiding facts.

He's been gone 18 years, no one is gong to know him to speak of and I don't see his family getting harassed to speak of either. How many even know of this? And what exactly wtill they get harassed about??

Aren't the threads about the nameless all about them getting their identifies back?

I guess not in this one. There's apparently some deep dark secret, possible embarrassment and more.

No offense, I'm just not getting it. Tired though and maybe just beyond me right now. In fact it sounds rather over the top at the moment. If I'm missing something, feel free to fill me in.

Here's what I have. We have some hinted US government spy but is German who is a truck driver traveling the US and often into Mexico and lived in at least three different places in Vegas and even though someone important apparently offs himself in a motor motel 18 years ago. His name is now known but can never be shared.

DO I have it right?

Like I said, and I am a little OVERDONE and TIRED, I am not getting it. It is hitting me actually as a bit ridiculous. Okayyyy.........

I'm sure someone will correct me or jump on doing so. And I am ready to "get" it?? So please inform me.

Firstly, congratulations on persevering through your tiredness enough to craft a response. Am I being presumptuous in saying that you seem like the type of person that seeks instant gratification?

Often times solves have little to no information on how the research was done that led up to a case being closed or backstory on what led the individual to die nameless. We have decided to write about this investigation in an unconventional way by revealing step by step what we found and where it led us. It's been a long road. We have been working on this case since 2008 but things didn't pick up steam until asking for the public's help 6 years ago. Those tips and our posts on Reddit were what led to the solve and so we are returning the favor by showing our work and his backstory in this fashion.

We're sorry that you don't get it and maybe this style of story telling is not for everyone. If you do find our writing upsetting then I would encourage you to not read or follow along. Our intention is not to anger the reader.

No, Im not angered or angry at all.

Nor do I need instant gratification.

I only skimmed this thread reading some not all. I was not aware you are writing of it or that you would think I meant anything personally directed at you. I diidn't and don't.I

Imo authorities would the ones not giving out a name.

Imo as well, stealing someone's identity is a crime and I don't believe in adult criminals having their names guarded.

While I feel for the family or any family, I simply don't agree it is right.

And if protection is due to something he did for govt. or whatever else that talk is about, he is dead now and so his name being known cannot hurt him.

Again, I did not mean you nor anyone else on here was doing it, I assumed it was authorities or authorities as well for sure.

I am also not scared to disagree with others and say so if I do. I feel no need to always be in agreement, and people aren't always, not just me either.

Keeping a book suspenseful is a lot different that authorities holding back a name.
