ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

New Orleans, LA – One person was killed and a four-year-old girl and three others were injured after a gunman opened fire along a Mardi Gras parade route on Sunday night.

The attack occurred outside the Hoshun restaurant near Terpsichore Street and St. Charles Avenue at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 19, WWL reported.

The Krewe of Bacchus parade was nearly complete when a gunman opened fire, hitting a four-year-old girl, a 22-year-old woman, a 24-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man, and a male teen between the ages of 15 and 18, according to police.

At a parade. Nowhere is safe. You can't go anywhere without worrying about being shot. It's gotten so out of control.

Just issued "Amber Alert".

PALM COAST, Fla. - A Matanzas High School student is accused of violently attacking and knocking a school employee unconscious because she took his Nintendo Switch gaming console away from him during class, according to deputies.

The 17-year-old Palm Coast boy was arrested on a charge of felony aggravated battery with bodily harm, the Flagler Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

<snip>
While in the classroom, the student made statements that he was upset that she took his game away and said he "will beat her up every time she takes away his game," an arrest report stated, and that "when he comes back he is going to kill her."

<snip>
Investigators reviewed the school's surveillance footage which showed the student – who is approximately 6 feet and 6 inches tall and weighs 270 pounds – rushing toward the school employee and pushing her several feet, knocking her unconscious on the floor. The boy is then seen kicking and punching the unconscious woman at least 15 times in the back and head, deputies said.

Kids like that are not going to become productive citizens. He's a psychopath and should be locked away for the rest of his life. It won't happen, but he will be in prison eventually.

This is not political, it's an article about criminals being sentenced for crimes they committed. That's what this board is about:

This is also, not political, it's about persons who committed crimes and have been prosecuted for them. Again, that's what this board is about.

OK, I've read both articles and agree they are applicable to this thread. If any discussion occurs, I will move them to the political threads.

LondonCNN —
UK police have arrested an aristocrat and her partner after the pair went missing with their newborn baby in early January, but the search for the infant continues.

A member of the public spotted Constance Marten, 35, and Mark Gordon, 48, in Brighton, southern England, on Monday night, police said Tuesday.

The couple were arrested at the location on suspicion of child neglect, officers said. They remain in custody.

Their baby, who police believe was born possibly one to two days before disappearing without receiving medical attention, is still missing and an “urgent search operation” is underway.

“Work is ongoing to try and locate the baby,” a spokesperson for the UK’s Metropolitan Police service told CNN Tuesday. “Anyone with information, we would ask them to call in if they’ve got something they think can help.”

SAN DIEGO (AP) — More than a year ago, a California parole board voted to free Robert F. Kennedy’s assassin, but the decision was later overturned by the governor.

Sirhan Sirhan will once again appear before the board Wednesday at a hearing at a federal prison in San Diego County to ask to be let out.

Even if the board rules that Sirhan is suitable for release a second time, his lawyer, Angela Berry, said she doesn’t expect it to change Gov. Gavin Newsom’s mind because of his “affinity for R.F. Kennedy,” who Newsom has cited as a political hero.

That’s why she said she’s also turning to the courts. The parole board hearing comes nearly six months after Berry asked a Los Angeles County judge to reverse Newsom’s denial. The case is ongoing.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes is citing her recently born child as another reason she should be allowed to delay the start of a more than 11-year prison sentence while her lawyers appeal her conviction for duping investors about the capabilities of her failed company’s blood-testing technology.

The birth of Holmes’ second child was confirmed in court documents filed last week in advance of a March 17 hearing about her bid to remain free during an appeals process that could take years to complete.

<snip>
Holmes isn’t citing her two children as the only reason she should be allowed to stay out of prison during her appeal. Her lawyers contend that an array of mistakes and abuses made during her trial make it likely her conviction will be overturned. They are also pointing to Holmes’ unblemished record while she has been free on bail during the four-and-half years since her criminal indictment as evidence that she isn’t a flight risk or a danger to the community.

I don't think he should be released. I think he's safer in prison, honestly.

I saw that. Too bad, so sad. Having babies wouldn't keep a poor woman from jail time.

A suspect believed to be connected to the 2011 murder of Todd Lampley of Hyannis was arrested and charged on Feb. 24 after an investigation found DNA on a sweet potato at the crime scene, according to CNN and the Cape Cod Times.

<snip>
Investigators found shell casings and a sweet potato on the ground outside the window of the bedroom where Lampley was shot, according to an arrest affidavit from Galibois’ office obtained by CNN. The sweet potato was cut flat at one end with a hole cut through its center, while the other end was “blown out and irregular,” according to the affidavit.
