ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

8/2021 - UTAH Kylen Schulte, 24, & Crystal Beck, 38, newlywed couple murdered

presser today

gun, car & admission statements linked Adam Pinkusiewicz to killings. He later suicided.

Father identified as suspect in murder-suicide of Utah family of 8

A Utah man fatally shot his family of seven in a home Wednesday and then himself, authorities said.

Michael Haight, 42, his wife; Tausha Haight, 40, and Tausha’s mother; 78-year-old Gail Earl, were discovered dead at the home, officials in Enoch City in southwestern Utah said. The couple’s five children, ages from 4 to 17, were also killed.

The city called Michael Haight a suspect in a statement Thursday.

Tausha Haight had filed a divorce petition in late December, officials at a media briefing said, stopping short of saying that was a factor in the deaths.

That's when a relative saw Walshe leave her home in Cohasset around 4 a.m. to take a ride share to Logan Airport in Boston for a flight to Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC. Her husband was sleeping when she left, the chief said, adding she was presumably called to a work emergency in DC.

Quigley said investigators have not been able to confirm she ever got in a ride share. He also said they've been in contact with all of the airlines and that she "did not board a plane this week." She was reported missing Wednesday.

Walshe lives in Cohasset with her husband and their three young sons but she works during the week as commercial real estate executive in Washington DC. Quigley said police have searched her home in Massachusetts as well as her townhouse in Washington.

WOW!

"This was not an accidental shooting," Newport News police Chief Steve Drew said.

No students were injured in the afternoon shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, police said in a statement.

The shooting happened in a first-grade classroom, and the child and teacher, who knew each other, were apparently alone, Drew said at an evening news conference.

"The altercation was between a 6-year-old, the student, who did have the firearm, and the teacher, and then a round was fired," the chief said.

The teacher, a woman in her 30s, was hospitalized, officials said.

What parents are so freaking stupid that they'd leave a gun lying around that a six year old get alhold of?

Not only that. But normal 6-year-old children do not have the correlation that "guns solve problems" and "if someone makes you mad, shoot them". This poor child was either exposed to some EXTREMELY inappropriate-for-age television media, and/or an extremely dangerous and toxic home life. Probably both. I hope the teacher pulls through.

this is a case where the adults in the child life definitely are responsible for the child's actions. So many of them I will not blame the parents, but this is not one of those.

The former husband of a woman whose murder remains unsolved is now accused of assaulting his current partner.

Benjamin Ledyard, 55, has been charged with second-degree assault, terroristic threatening and menacing.

The New Castle County Division of Police said officers were dispatched to a residence in Wilmington on Jan. 1 at approximately 1:50 p.m. for an "in progress domestic dispute."

Ledyard's partner told officers that she had an argument with Ledyard over loud music.

"During the argument, Ledyard grabbed a pool stick and began swinging the object and chasing the victim around the house," according to a police press release. "Ledyard then struck the victim in the head with a heavy marble item leaving a large laceration."

Ledyard's partner left the home and called for help. He was taken into custody without incident, police said.

A 21-year-old woman was reportedly found decapitated inside a rural Texas home just outside Houston and her husband has been arrested.

The Waller County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a home around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday after family members of the woman's husband called them.

The woman lived in a small home with her husband, identified as Jared Dicus, also 21. They were reportedly married in October 2022.

Dicus was detained at the scene and confessed to the killing, authorities said. His father found the woman, who the sheriff described as "undocumented." There was evidence that she was stabbed with a kitchen knife, Sheriff Guidry said.

"Everything happened on the property. And all parts and pieces were recovered and submitted for evidence,"

Guidry said authorities have been called to the home before for disturbance calls. A motive for the killing is still being determined.

A Nevada judge sentenced the former Playboy model to prison for the murder of a California psychiatrist

found beaten to death in Mercedes trunk

A Clark County, Nevada, judge on Tuesday sentenced former Playboy model Kelsey Turner to serve 10 to 25 years in prison for her role in the 2019 killing of California psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Burchard.

Turner, 29, agreed in November to an Alford plea, which maintains the defendant's innocence despite prosecutorial evidence that would likely result in a guilty verdict if presented before a jury. Turner and her then-boyfriend, 29-year-old Jon Logan Kennison, were arrested in 2019 after authorities found Burchard's body stuffed in the trunk of an abandoned car on State Route 147 near Lake Mead outside Las Vegas.

LCSO said it was where the then-missing person, James Hurst, was last known to have been on board during Hurricane Ian.

Crews worked all of Friday on the sunken sailboat. First, divers went in the water to help prep, then the boat was lifted onto the dock hours after it was out of the water, WINK News saw people in hazmat suits going into the boat and removing items.

Hurst is the last unaccounted person from Fort Myers Beach in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

"This has been attributed as the largest shootout in the city’s history, by numerous police sources, yet the incident was not mentioned by Greenberg or police despite numerous press conferences about the city’s record-breaking levels of violence."

HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — A warrant for first-degree murder has been issued for Kevin Watson, husband of Britney Watson who was last seen between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. on January 7, 2023.

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office began searching for Britney Watson on January 15, 2023, saying that she went missing from 3317 Hillville Loop.

<snip>
Though Sheriff Garrett took to Facebook to announce the first-degree murder warrant against Kevin Watson on Wednesday the 18th, no mention was made of finding Britney.

“An arrest warrant will be issued today for First Degree Murder on Kevin. This is done to cover all possibilities and to meet requirements for me to get additional resources to help search,” Sheriff Garrett wrote.

The search was postponed on that Wednesday due to weather warnings and Sheriff Garrett said that if the couple has not been found by Friday then authorities will attempt to organize a large party of volunteers to help find the missing couple.
