ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Remember Irina Yarmolenko, 20, UNCC student murdered 2008?

A murder charge against a man who was accused in 2008 of killing a University of North Carolina at Charlotte student was dropped, according to the Gaston County District Attorney.

Mark Carver was previously serving a life sentence after a jury decided in 2011 that he killed Irina Yarmolenko. The Chapel Hill High School graduate was found strangled next to her car on the banks of the Catawba River. Yarmolenko was 20."

Superior Court Judge Christopher Bragg ruled in 2019 that questions about DNA evidence and ineffective legal representation during Carver's 2011 trial warranted a new trial.

Instead of a new trial, Gaston County District Attorney Travis Page announced Friday that the county dropped the murder charge against Carver.

According to the dismissal posted on Twitter by WSOC Reporter Ken Lemon, Page said there is "no longer sufficient DNA evidence to support the charge."

DAMN!

Doesn't seem like the worker was charged with anything, but this SHOULD be a crime.

Teen girl catches child protective services telling her to become a prostitute, report says
A 14-year-old girl in Texas allegedly caught a Child Protective Services (CPS) employee on video advising her to sell her body to make money.

The incident reportedly led to the commissioner of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services personally apologizing to both the teenager and her mother.

CPS was housing Bazley's daughter at a hotel, the local report explained, adding that she's one of many foster children living in hotels in Harris County, Texas.

According to Bazley's teenage daughter, one employee with CPS was actively encouraging her to take up prostitution. As Bazley told KRIV News, this prompted her teen to secretly record an interaction with the employee.
My daughter told me that the worker had been telling her she should do these things, so she said she decided to video her," Bazley reportedly said.
In the video obtained by KRIV News, the girl can be heard asking for food. The CPS employee can then be heard encouraging the girl to consider prostitution as a means to make money.

Spokesperson Melissa Lanford told KRIV News that the person caught on camera telling the teen to consider prostitution has been "dismissed from her position."

It dam*ed well should be prosecutable in her position! And a cirme! The spokesperson says she has been dismissed welll "bully for them" OF COURSE SHE SHOULD BE DISMISSED! That's it??

Foster kidsyd living in hotels and workers encouraging prostitution, I'd be a bit worried this is the tip of the iceberg honestly. TX has changed a lot. While the staunch people and ways still exist, for years now it is just like many other places where that is changing and not for the better. It has gone too far the other way in many cases.
I"m not going to go down the rabbit hole of why but anyhow...

This is really disturbing. Especially when all talk these days is trafficking.

One can't tell of course the mother is decent but in this blip it sounds like she'd be better off with her mother than with CPS!!

The whole CPS department there should be investigated.

It sounds like it doesn't it. Hotels and suggestions of prostitution. Something wrong there.

I mean whose brain doesn't go there? If CPS is housing them in hotels you know they aren't the Ritz Carlton and often cheaper or lower end hotels/motels are known for things like prostitution and then that is what is suggested. Maybe they also need to look at who and how the vet these employees... The whole department as you say should be looked at in such a case.
