Jackson police investigating missing mother, child; husband in custody

The Jackson Police Department is investigating a missing persons case involving a mother and her young daughter.

Police said 32-year-old Shardee McGill and her 3-year-old daughter, Janae, were reported missing Tuesday night. Her husband, Johnathan McGill, contacted police around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 23 to file the report. He told officers the two left home Sunday evening and never returned.

Investigators said her 2017 black Chevrolet Equinox, with Mississippi license plate HNJ 817, was found unoccupied in Epes, Alabama, by local police.

The Jackson Police Department said it is working closely with Alabama authorities. Johnathan McGill has since been taken into custody by Alabama police.

Jackson police: Body of missing mother found in Alabama, daughter still missing

The Jackson Police Department says the body of a woman at the center of a missing persons case has been found in Alabama, while her young daughter remains missing.

On Wednesday morning, a multi-agency search near Epes, Alabama, discovered Shardee McGill’s body in a shallow body of water. Authorities said the cause of death is still unknown but appears suspicious.

Her daughter, Janae, is still missing. Local, state and federal officials from both Alabama and Mississippi are continuing the search.

It looks like Janae was also likely found.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, authorities located the body of an adult female in the river. The next day, Sept. 26, a child’s body was also recovered.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is working to confirm the identities. Investigators say the case remains ongoing.

Missing 3-year-old from Jackson found dead, 1 day after missing mom also found dead

The search for a missing 3-year-old from Jackson has ended.

Friday afternoon, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones wrote on social media that 3-year-old Janae McGill had been found dead near where her mother, Shardee McGill, had been found dead earlier on Thursday.

Shardee McGill’s body had been located by authorities in a shallow body of water near Epes, Alabama.

The cause of Janae’s death is unknown, while Shardee’s death has been called “suspicious” by authorities.

During the investigation, Alabama law enforcement detained the husband of Shardee and father of Janae, Johnathan McGill.

He was only detained for questioning, authorities said, and later released.

He’s released?
Yep. :(

Jones said the husband was taken in for questioning and later released as their investigation remains ongoing.

“We don’t have any suspect information. We don’t have a cause of death. We don’t have any evidence at this time to lead to any type of arrest,” Jones explained. “It’s too early for that information right now. He was questioned regarding them being missing and the vehicle being located in Alabama.”
