I almost made a thread for her when she disappeared. But then I saw that she had a Project Lifesaver band, was near water, and thought they'd find her pretty quickly.
Now, it turns out the band wasn't even on her. Yet her parents were apparently urging them to trace it to find her.
Mom has some very recent criminal history. Dad is 70!

The Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office said that, with help from its members, investigators were able to determine that 5-year-old Saylor Hayes, who was found dead after going missing in Georgetown County, South Carolina, was not wearing her Project Lifesaver transmitter when she went missing.

Hayes was a member of the sheriff’s office’s Project Lifesaver program. Her family is from the Bristol area, according to the sheriff’s office. The program provides bands with transmitters that at-risk individuals with cognitive disabilities can wear. The bands track the individual’s location in case they abscond or go missing.

Hayes, a nonverbal child, was reported missing on Sunday after her mother told authorities that she wandered away from a rental home in Hagley, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said that 70-year-old John Herb Hayes III and 31-year-old Geordyn Nichole Hayes were arrested in Carter County, Tennessee, on Tuesday.

Both John and Geordyn were charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk/willfully abandoning a child.

Authorities said that Saylor was part of the Project Lifesaver program, which is used to find missing people with a cognitive condition. However, the tracking device had been removed before the family left for vacation.

According to the arrest warrants, Saylor's parents failed to provide supervision and safeguards appropriate for a "severely nonverbal" 5-year-old child with autism, who had a known affinity for the water.

Authorities said that Saylor was part of the Project Lifesaver program, which is used to find missing people with a cognitive condition. However, the tracking device had been removed before the family left for vacation.

Arrest warrants say that after Saylor's body was found, the couple encouraged the search team to use the tracking device, despite knowing that she was not wearing the monitoring device. Furthermore, the couple is accused of directing the search away from the water.

Saylor Hayes’ mother wants another bond hearing, and her attorney has filed a motion asking the court to grant her release ahead of a trial.

Geordyn Hayes, 31, and her husband John Hayes III, 71, of Virginia, remain in the Georgetown County Detention Center after being denied bond last month. They are charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk/willfully abandoning a child in connection with their 5-year-old daughter Saylor’s disappearance and death.


Geordyn Hayes' attorney has asked the court for a second bond hearing, arguing that she cannot properly prepare for her defense while in jail.

"The Defendant is not a flight risk, is not a threat to herself or the community and is unable to adequately and effectively prepare for her defense while incarcerated pre-trial," her attorney, Casey Brown, wrote in a Sept. 28 motion for bond.

The motion noted that other factors may be brought to the court's attention at the hearing, though the document did not describe them and Brown declined to comment on the filing.

Meanwhile, John Hayes has not made a similar request for another bond hearing in his case. His attorney, Stuart Axelrod, could not be reached for comment.

Axelrod previously told the court that he did not think his client was dangerous.

"This was an accident," Axelrod said, calling the media coverage of the case inaccurate.

Solicitor reviews Saylor Hayes case as final autopsy report remains pending
More than a month after 5-year-old Saylor Hayes was found dead in the Pawleys Island area, the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office is reviewing the case against her parents as prosecutors await a final autopsy report.


An autopsy was conducted on Saylor’s body Sept. 4 at MUSC in Charleston, but the final report has not been completed.

Richardson says that report will be a critical piece of the case for prosecutors.

The preliminary autopsy report found fluid in Saylor’s lungs, also known as pulmonary edema, but no visible signs of internal or external trauma.

Richardson emphasized that although he has been told the cause of death was drowning, the autopsy has not been completed and Saylor’s official cause and manner of death remain undetermined.

The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office says the final autopsy report is expected to take about eight to 10 weeks from the date of the procedure. Additional lab tests were pending.
