The search is on for an Indianapolis couple that has been missing in the Nevada desert somewhere between Reno and Las Vegas for a week.

Family members say Ronnie and Beverly Barker were on an RV trip from from Albany, Oregon to Tucson, Arizona when they disappeared. The couple was last seen at a gas station in Stagecoach, Nevada around 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2022.

So the last pings were fairly late at night and I'm sure dark (if outside of a town), 10:16 p.m. Both phones are unlikely to have both just went dead at that time... Anything I think of like lost in the dark etc. isn't going to turn both phones off... I can't think of anything that would case that other than foul play or if they intentionally wanted to disappear which seems highly unlikely for a couple of this age with family and friends they were visiting en route and then the rig and car disappear as well...? If they went deep into water (if there is any) would phones stop pinging immediately...?

The only other thought is if they are out of the range of any service but still wouldn't there be intermittent or occasional pings...? I'm not up on that tech stuff but it just still seems someone would see the rig, as stated if broken down they could use the car they were towing, etc. Even a crash doesn't explain it... They could both have died or be injured but their phones would still ping...

It sure seems it must be foul play...
The pings ability would depend on just how far out of signal they were. If nothing is there for the signal the phone sends out to pick up at all, there is no ping.

Looking over google earth for the presumed trip they would have to take for those locations, I do not see much of anywhere they could have gone off the road without being seen. It's flat forever through most of it or in the hillier areas, the road is at the bottom of the terrain. I am seeing either foul play or a gps gone wrong trip.

I've been going to google earth/map it too but haven't taken the time. It did seem to me it would be dry, sparse and mostly desert most likely plus I felt a rig that size and their age would likely have them sticking to a main road and not venturing too far down any unknown route...?

If it was that late at night and a very small area, maybe they couldn't find anywhere to park for the night...? Or anything open...? And/or we have to consider even that last ping someone else may have had the phones... It is unlikely the two of them disabled both... So then it is back to their last sighting in whatever town it was...

Missing couple’s RV found empty, nephew says

The nephew of the missing couple who were driving through Nevada says their RV has been found, but the couple and their car were not there.

Travis Peters tells 8 News Now that “They discovered the RV this afternoon around noon your time. It’s located on the other side of red mountain I’m not sure exactly where but it’s in the Silver Peak area. Ronnie and Beverly were not with the RV, and the car was gone. All the Deputy could tell us is that it was buried in the mud.”

However, 8 News Now called the Esmeralda County Sheriff’s Office and was told the RV had not been found today.

If this is correct (perhaps the person taking calls wasn't aware of the development), sounds like some of us were on target.
Looks like they got off on a side road and ended up stuck. Tried to take the car to get out.
Hoping they're still hanging in there... Hoping they took some food and water in the RV / car.

The 2:41 a.m entry on 04/05/22 hits home as in many of the new cases lately I am seeing people upset and fed up with our system, the red tape and everything else that stops immediate help, or the lack of concern.

As far as the RV being found in the mud, it does make sense but I'm still wondering about the phones. I'm sure we will find out when they find the car and the couple. Praying all is fine but I doubt they got to any town, etc. or they would have let family know they are okay.

An Indianapolis man who has been missing for more than a week during an RV trip in Nevada with his wife has died.

Family members tell 13News Ronnie and Beverly Barker were found Tuesday evening on a mountain west of Silver Peak, about 3 1/2 hours northwest of Las Vegas.

Ronnie Barker is deceased, according to a family member. His wife was found alive and is being transported to Reno for medical care.

Earlier Tuesday, search crews found the Barkers' RV stuck in the mud in the area, but the couple and the SUV they had been towing behind the RV were not at the scene. Hours later, they were found in the mountains.

Once they found the RV they found them quick enough but not soon enough for him sadly. I hope the failure to issue a Silver Alert doesn't play into his death because the family member is already upset Nevada didn't take it seriously enough. And I agree that they should have. He said before they were found that IT WILL change and he will see to it and see if his state has any similar issues as well (IN).

I do still wonder about the phones, etc. and how far they were from the RV but that will come I'm sure.

RIP Ronnie.

Family of missing couple found in Nevada calls for change in Silver Alert policy

Peters and other family members were frustrated a Silver Alert wasn’t issued sooner.

Nevada State Police made an exception for this case by issuing the alert. NSP procedures require the missing person to be from the state of Nevada in order to issue a Silver Alert.

That rule is something Peters wants to change.

“It flabbergasts me that a state that depends on tourism is not willing to take care of the tourists and that’s what it comes down to. To me, a life is a life. Who cares where they live? It makes no sense to me,” Peters added.

Here’s a closer look at the criteria for a Silver Alert in Nevada:

The person missing must be 60 years of age or older and diagnosed with a medical or mental condition.

It also fits the criteria if the person goes missing under suspicious circumstances.

The missing person must be from the state of Nevada.

Law enforcement has to rule out an impaired mental state as a reason for the disappearance.

The request for a Silver Alert must happen within 72 hours of the disappearance.

***Note by me: Point in red above is incorrect. They don't rule OUT that the impaired mental state is the reason for disappearance. They try to verify that it IS the reason and rule out alternatives.

The family of Ron and Beverly Barker issued a statement Wednesday evening, thanking those who joined the search and rescue effort for the couple and for the thousands of people who have supported them through the ordeal.

They also wrote that they hope their loss leads to changes in how public safety officials in Nevada handle missing persons cases in the future.

Read their full statement:

"The family of Ronnie and Beverly Barker wish to thank those who participated in the search and rescue operations to locate our beloved family members. The outpouring of support was nothing short of incredible by the members of the local community. Our hearts are full because of the efforts that were put forth to help us bring Ron and Bev back home again to Indiana.

While the loss of Ronnie Barker is tragic, we are grateful that Beverly was found alive and can now begin her recovery from this tragic ordeal. We are grateful that Beverly will be able to fill in the blanks and give us the answers that we all so desperately seek.

Ronnie Barker loved his family and loved his country. He served our nation proud over his 26-year career in the United States Air Force. Ronnie was a believer in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was proud of his faith and was always willing to give to others. He was funny, witty, and was the spark of energy that everyone gravitated toward. People just loved and wanted to be around Ron Barker.

Our family grieves over this news, and we question the roadblocks that seemed to stifle the search from the moment we were made aware of their disappearance. It's our hope that Ronnie Barker's legacy will be changing policy that will allow for a more expeditious approach to locating missing persons of all ages for both non-residents and residents of the state of Nevada. We call upon the citizens of Nevada to stand up and demand that changes be made at ALL levels of Public Safety to avoid the hurdles that our family faced as we attempted to bring resources into the search of our loved ones.

Fly high MSgt Ronnie E. Barker, you served us all well.

I applaud their efforts and hope they create change.

So tragic this was to be an enjoyable trip for the couple. I wonder how many years they've been married. To work to where you can get an RV and travel and then have this happen, my heart breaks for them.

I wonder how far they were out of their way or how far they got before realizing it was wrong. Maybe they were trying to turn around when they got stuck.

So the GPS directions were wrong, is that what it means? That sounds like a possible lawsuit. I wonder how many others have taken this wrong route. Most probably don't get stuck maybe because of no big rig. They said though the car got stuck too didn't they, forgot about that. Was this some dirt road then or they ended up on or a dirt path maybe.

My last thought is if this route was known to be wrong at all or have caused other problems, it almost seems LE could have had a good idea of where to start looking.

Sounds like had they begun investigating sooner, there IS a good chance he may not have died. Tragic.
