‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I don’t understand the back doors being propped on and there’s blood on the front steps? Were they taking stuff out of the house? They haven’t said anything was stolen from the house, but they haven’t said anything wasn’t stolen, have they?
This is the first I've heard of it. I haven't heard of items missing or about the doors. It seems this investigation is so haphazard it's ridiculous.

I wonder if someone was trying to roll her out the back and decided to switch to the front door instead? I'm betting she had a rollator or wheelchair in her house.

I'm about to wonder if they got the wrong house.

It seems they believe someone was casing the house on January 19th.

I’m thinking more and more and more that this is somebody they know. Whether it be a Handyman or a friend of a friend or whatever, it just seems like this person was too familiar with the house. How would he know that somebody that lives in that expensive of a house wouldn’t have their Ring camera working? That’s just one thing.

I believe it was probably somebody on the perifery of her life. Possibly somebody that overheard her say something that have them the idea.

A new note.

Ransom note claims Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother Nancy Guthrie “is dead,” TMZ says
TMZ reported on Monday that the outlet received two more purported ransom notes related to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of TODAY show host, Savannah Guthrie.
The note claimed to know where Nancy Guthrie’s body is and who is responsible for her kidnapping, TMZ revealed.

According to the outlet, the notes were sent from the same unknown person, who almost two months ago, demanded one bitcoin in exchange for information related to Guthrie’s Feb. 1 disappearance.

The news comes the same day Savannah Guthrie made her return to the TODAY show following her mother’s disappearance.

The note claimed that Nancy Guthrie “is dead.”

After addressing the first note, Levin revealed that the second note states: “I saw her alive with the in the state of Sonora Mexico.”

TMZ said it has alerted the FBI on the two new ransom notes.

The mystery author of the notes claimed they will give up the information for half a bitcoin with another half transferred to their account when there is a public arrest, the outlet reports.

The person behind the note said they have been “disregarded as a scam” by law enforcement and Levin noted that the sender has been “persistent,” despite the potential for being charged with a hoax crime.

It’s unbelievable that millions have been wasted and yet here I am willing to deliver them on a silver platter since the 11th of February for a bitcoin, but I am disregarded as a scam They are free and the case is frozen, but the egos remain hot when it comes to me,” the letter allegedly states.

Despite claiming to hold valuable information, the person says they have nothing to do with the “horrific crime,” insisting that they have been out of the US for more than five years.

I just want what's fair and to live peacefully with enough to start my life again quietly without having to join a witness protection program,” the note reportedly states.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office has not responded to this potential development in the case.
