‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I gave it a listen, I had things to do at home so listened while I did them and not much else on about it that isn't also old news basically. Nothing too earth shattering but all the guests were good. Mike and the lady at the end both think he did not enter through the front but came out through the front. That's where I've been leaning. And I don't think he was in there the 41 minutes most out there, even news, are saying.

I don't know if it's fact but she says if you zoom in you can see the blood on the flowers... That he used to cover the camera... This would mean the video of him is when they were leaving and where is Nancy? Likely already in a car...

I've never thought about that video what a lot do, again even news, because there is no time stamp...

That part was very interesting. He either entered through the garage or the back which seems to be favored by them...
If the footage of him with the flowers is after Nancy was taken out then why didnt we see her abduction on the camera footage at all? The blood in the porch was supposedly Nancy's right?

Because, imo, we aren't being shown all of the images/video.

It's just what the one guest said, I personally never noted blood on the flowers so I'm putting it in my fact column..

I do think though her blood on the exit/front/porch, whatever one wants to call it, I'd say front entryway, is indicative of when they left...

The only other part of it I found a bit of note was the Range Rover and "that guy" who drove it. I've never heard that he was cleared nor more about the vehicle which they did tow. I did hear the two in the home and the home were cleared so to speak but I trust any reporting in this about as much as I trust that money will fall from the sky tomorrow.

BUT the Rover and that third person do not seem to have been talked about or cleared or anything since that raid. But then they don't tell us much so who knows...

Trump gives grim assessment on Nancy Guthrie case weeks after she went missing: ‘Boy, it’s so crazy, so bad’

Police believe the 84-year-old was abducted from her Arizona home as she slept more than two weeks ago

Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in the affluent Catalina Foothills, outside of Tucson, on January 31. Police believe she was taken from her home while she slept.

Police are yet to publicly identify Nancy’s suspected kidnapper, but have shared video of a suspect wearing a ski mask and gloves who appeared to have tampered with the missing woman’s front door camera on the morning she is believed to have been abducted.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One Thursday, Trump, who has expressed support for the Guthrie family amid Nancy’s disappearance, said, “Boy, it’s so crazy, so bad.”

“I didn’t like when they were talking about going after the pacemaker, and you know, before they even started going after it, they’re coming and reporting it,” the president said.

“So if, in fact, they could do it that way, the person would say, ‘Well, I’m not going to let that happen,’ right? So bad things would happen,” Trump added. “It’s a very sad situation.”

NewsNation reported earlier this week that authorities used a “signal sniffer” device attached to a helicopter to try to detect Nancy’s pacemaker. Nancy’s pacemaker was disconnected from an app on her phone the morning she went missing, according to authorities.

Trump has threatened the death penalty if Nancy is found dead, telling the New York Post Monday that there would be “the most severe” consequences for those responsible.

Authorities are desperately trying to find Nancy, who needs medication for her health condition.

“Her health, her heart is fragile. She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive. She needs it not to suffer,” Savannah said in a video posted to Instagram days after her mother’s disappearance.

Between the FBI and local officials, the reward for valuable information in Nancy’s case has grown to more than $200,000.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday authorities are “looking into investigative genetic genealogy options” to identify possible matches to DNA evidence collected, according to reports.

The department announced on social media Tuesday DNA from a pair of gloves found two miles away from Nancy’s home “did not trigger a match” in the FBI’s national database and “did not match DNA found at the property.”

Earlier this week, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told the Associated Press authorities are working with Walmart management “to develop further leads” as the backpack the suspect was wearing in the doorbell video was sold exclusively at the retailer’s stores.

Savannah and her family have yet to give up hope on finding Nancy, even offering to pay for her safe return following reports of unverified ransom notes.

“I wanted to say to whoever has her, or knows where she is, that it’s never too late,” Savannah said in a video posted to Instagram Sunday. “It is never too late to do the right thing.”

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement shared with The Independent Thursday, “Currently, several hundred personnel are assigned to this case from various law enforcement agencies and are actively reviewing thousands of tips.”

I think he should let PR people handle this.

The idiot reporters keep asking him, what do you expect?

This case is cooling, I said the other day i thought that was coming and it is imo. Of course that's typical when raids and LE going to relative's homes end and so on.

I'm not convinced at all they have much of anything yet in this one although I sure could be wrong and hope I am. So far this "kidnapper" has outsmarted the FBI, LE, etc.

On the other hand, with less attn and reporter intrusion and time, maybe the perp will relax and LE can do their job without all of the obstacles all the press has brought.

He could have said: I'll let the FBI and local LE handle that.

yeah any one of the seated presidents in our history could say this, or could say that. he is likely also being asked as he committed to sending all help they could ask for from the FBI.

try to be fair instead of so obviously biased. some of us look at all sides. imo. you look for anything against and because of that, you don't see the total view.

on another note Banfield is more the subject here to talk of. she pops up in the Epstein files and tried to make the SIL here the suspect and endorses and espouses John Ramsey. if you want to go down a rabbit hole, forget Trump and try her lol.

all that said, i don't have much faith in this case. i HOPE through time and hard work they come up with a vehicle, the backpack purchaser, and more and solve this.

Point taken.

There is no new news today. This will be turning into a cold case, I hope not, but it seems headed that way.

Hate to agree with you, but I do... I think this guy that many like to call an amateur, etc. so far has sure gotten away with it...

Many talking heads like to talk about Kohberger which took seven weeks... Yeah, maybe in time with video and traffic and DNA and more... Maybe they know who and are surveilling him as if you do an arrest, doesn't mean you will find the missing Nancy...

I don't feel any of that though... I feel they have little... I hope I'm wrong.

Not sure if you really took the point but I hope so. I know I didn't really get a good view until I started looking at all. You also can't influence anyone if you don't know all sides imo. If you want to even dwell on such. None of us will ever change anything anyhow, especially when in so much disagreement, which they all do to us imo, intentionally.

I don't have much hope here. It makes absolutely no sense someone would keep her alive when the ransom stuff has ended, at least the ones that seemed they might be true. Possibly. Personally I never believed any of them but who knows...

I think it's pretty obvious that she's not alive anymore. She doesn't have her meds, she was bleeding when she was carried out. It's just not good.

I lean that way too. As far as we know, no ransom has been paid, we know she has not been returned for sure. It's a danger to keep her (although she could be a bargaining chip), and I think it highly unlikely she is alive. I am not even convinced she was alive after the incident or shortly after.

I was feeling that sense of "uh oh" last night when I caught Brian Entin's daily update and he said a lot of the other reporters weren't manning their tents anymore. The family has got to feel deflated, too, knowing that the intensity surrounding the case is starting to dwindle.

I'd imagine the family is feeling both ways. Attn is good but media like Banfield I think has added a lot of additional stress to the family. And she could be right or wont, it doesn't matter to me. She crossed the line big time.

I also imagine Savanna herself deals with a ton of thoughts on top of the sheer worry about her mom, as she was in the spotlight and had her mom in it somewhat too.

I can't imagine.

But yah, losing steam also has the down side, not as much public attn, tips, and so on, but I think all that know of it are well aware and will call in should they see anything of import.

I'm trying not to think it's dead as far as what LE knows and is doing, but I am not surprised if media gets a few days of no raids or big things their interest wanes or their channels interest wanes...
Jmo of course.

He says, for one thing, that the things re Nanos are a political football. That's what I've always suspected of it. He also says he has always found him to be good, open and transparent, and that he is reserving judgment of him. I feel much the same and I don't even know any of them.

To me, it's pretty clear there seems to be a faction that is doing such but I'm on a wait and see.

Short. I think 5+ minutes.

Just watched one from Gigi, just a short. I could have linked it but as she said, there hasn't been a lot to report. LE apparently now saying they think more than one person involved. Hardly a shocking revelation although I remain unconvinced whether one or more. Also that the genetic thing is going on and there is biological evidence though not detailing what, from inside the home. I'm not convinced they have much of anything. That guy was so covered...

Two I heard recently think the video is of him after and that he entered through the back or elsewhere. If that's the case, what is in the backpack could be things from Nancy's house. However, Dr. G gave a pretty good view of it open and with what looks like a tarp in it. But why do you need a tarp if you don't intend to kill Nancy? This case just boggles...

Awfully quiet which makes it seem the two raids were what they felt were their best shots at this and after that, they have no idea of who did it/where she is...

I'm trying hard to look at this in some other way... If that is him after, then she is already in a car I'd think and he is going up to take care of that camera where they exited right...? Or to be sure nothing was dropped or something and then he notices the camera...? I'm not convinced of ANYTHING in this one including where he entered...

IS IT POSSIBLE he was already in the home when she got home...? Do the other things in the timeline still work then? Her opening and shutting the garage still work... What else was there? Disabling the camera... Her disconnecting from her watch and phone...

So I dismissed the botched robbery thing but could she have just interrupted a robbery...?

How about this? The Uber driver knew she was not at home... She's 84 and called for an Uber to a well to do area and easy to figure if she needs an Uber and at her age, she likely lives alone... @Cousin Dupree If he kept his app for Uber up, could he see if she ever called for an Uber to the daughter's home for a return ride? Maybe he assumed since she Ubered there, she'd be Ubering back, and because he never saw a ride called for, thought the home was still empty and she was still at the daughter's...? It doesn't mean that it had to be the driver, he could be giving info to a partner...

I still think there's a possibility that the person did not know Savanna was her daughter.. HEck, I think there are all sorts of possibilities, we just don't know enough.

I almost think they must have recovered video of him and Nancy leaving out the front door but they haven't shared it... We KNOW it is an exit because Nancy's blood is there, we just don't know where he entered. There also HAS to be a car imo parked where we can't see with lights off. Some reporters, etc. seem to think Nancy was almost totally not ambulatory but imo that's nowhere close to true.

She is able to get in and out of an Uber, she's not using assisted transport. I know from this last year for me what it's like to be "hardly" ambulatory and not able to get in and out of a vehicle on my own. Thank God now I can. I couldn't get downstairs but I could manage the minimum in my apt, very little for a time, but managed. She is going out to her daughter's, she got around, just couldn't go far for any amount of time is how it sounds to me.

I'm not going to get anywhere with this, the case is just BUGGING me and felt a need to talk some out to think it better.

I don't have much faith here even with all the people on it. I don't know that I think they have anything from "him" as to DNA. They might but not convinced it will turn out being his. I think they ran with their best information with the two raids which resulted in little. I do still have a little hope on the last one but not convinced. And now it's quiet.

They MAY get him with a lot of looking at cars in other videos and trying to string something together, the backpack, maybe the DNA, and other things, maybe in time... But I don't think they will find her alive. I don't know that she was not long after they left.

SO, it appears she was alive when they exited but the question is, WHY did they take her.....????? Why take her to kill her or why take her just to disappear her...?????

Long, I'm sorry. Anyone can scroll past. Won't bother me. Just trying to talk some things "out loud" and figure them out, of which it won't do anyhow... Maybe it will give other's thoughts though that haven't crossed my mind...
