‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I'm not sure of anything in this case.

Can you imagine the field day any good defense attorney would have blowing through all of the mistakes being made daily if this ever goes to trial?

Look for pro bono work from someone looking to make a name for themselves. I'm sure this game will come up, if it's allowed.

What I am 100% sure of is any defense attorney will be bringing up all the times they released the house only to go back numerous times. Also, all the statements the sheriff has made that contradict each other. Chain of evidence of "found" items will also definitely come up.

If it's not a super popular item it should be easy to access the records. Also, how new the item is will enter into it. Hopefully, it's just started selling a short time ago.
Hoping so too but it looks fairly basic so hard to say.

Best case scenario is that they change designs each year for it. Imo. That would limit a time frame.

Here's another place to buy that backpack.

Yeah, a lot of people resell Wmart items on Ebay and Amazon. Still though they had to make an original purchase, it is still a trail, albeit a longer one.

I think the intense media interest in this is going to die down soon. I don't mean it will die entirely but I think the number of them on the ground, the day to day going around trying to get info, etc. will. One more week with nothing big and I think it's going to change a lot.

I see both benefits and disadvantages of that. I bet it already is changing some on the ground. Maybe not, but it will soon I think.

Those are just middlemen. That doesn't say who the middlemen sold to.

I sent a tip to one of the reporters at kgun9. Maybe nothing, but these police clowns probably never thought of it.

What I mean is the, for instance, Ebay seller though has to initially buy them from Walmart. So it would take longer. They'd have to then go through them to get their sales records.
I think it far more likely this guy walked into a Wmrt though or ordered from Wmart online. In both cases Wmart would have those records.

You sent a tip to reporters rather than like the FBI tip line? Why? Can you tell us what it is at least?

I think alien to human nature is to think of what is not being said. It isn't the normal way of thinking and I often have to remind myself to do that.

And I just did...

The sheriff was fairly forthcoming the first night and next day I'd say but then, imo thanks to Banfield yet again, that ended.
My point though is he consistently does not want to say whether this was forced entry or not, and he does not want to say whether anything was taken or not.

He holds back on which door was entered or what they think there.

I think things being taken is less important. For a couple of reasons. One, there is imo no way to know truly if anything was unless the person that lives there is there to tell you and assess everything. Another would be if they know of say one thing, then only the perp would know that so I could see holding that back.

The entry though I wonder about why he is so firm that that won't be shared. It could be that again only the perp would know how he accessed, and LE. Also they would be the only ones who would know if entry was forced.

However, I wonder if there is more to how the person got in...Key? Code? Forced? Window? Door? Which one? Followed her into garage (doubtful to me but possible)... I have more trouble with this one and understanding why such a big secret... Unless entry was unusual or the manner would tend to indicate a certain type of person. Like if she opened the door, probably someone she trusted or faked they were a cop or some such... Or if no forced entry, would indicate someone she knew that had access code or key...

I mean feds are known to release little and that explains some of it but still I just wonder...

There are other things that one could look at what is not being said but those two come to mind for me.

I don't have anyone or anything in mind, just wondering the reason that is so avoided...

88-CRIME Doesn't work from NYS. Why not pursue every avenue?

I'm sure @Kimster can tell you who she shipped to for the past couple of months on things she's sold.

I already posted the eBay account.

Gotcha, so you are letting them know others retail this backpack?

Yeah, I know how Ebay works. I Ebayed a lot and still have a store although I've had it on vacation for some time now lol.

I imagine they know this but good to let them know anyhow. They still have to buy them from Wmart or the seller is dropshipping and in that case, Wmart has the delivery addresses of that Ebay person's purchasers.

Anyone can pull up the backpack, then filter out "sold listings" and see who bought what for the last 90 days. Then you'd have to check out each buyer and see "if" you can tell where it shipped to. Depends on if they have allowed that info to be public or not.

TMZ has one out, again I don't want to help them or link them, etc. about the possibility of border crossing and what LE told them too. And of course another ransom note.

Now it is OMG I will just have to come back and tell the summary as they are milking and playing it. Let me see what it sums up to.

Now he's going to about the Wmart stuff, etc. and the gun, holster.

Harvey is MILKING it. Went totally away from the letter now to sh*t we all know about the things the kidnapper was wearing...

Good reason to never link them.
