‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I almost gave in and linked it thinking it won't give them that many views from here anyhow but then he just switched course and then abruptly ended the segnment kind of in the midst of it so ya know he will do more and the same of it throughout the day. Total teaser. I think he was even talking like this is back to the first high amount of the first ransom letters of 6M.

I'm so sick of these people. I've also come close to having had it with megyn kelly. i think i'm there now too.

I think this industry...

I think alien to human nature is to think of what is not being said. It isn't the normal way of thinking and I often have to remind myself to do that.

And I just did...

The sheriff was fairly forthcoming the first night and next day I'd say but then, imo thanks to Banfield yet again, that ended.
My point though is he consistently does not want to say whether this was forced entry or not, and he does not want to say whether anything was taken or not.

He holds back on which door was entered or what they think there.

I think things being taken is less important. For a couple of reasons. One, there is imo no way to know truly if anything was unless the person that lives there is there to tell you and assess everything. Another would be if they know of say one thing, then only the perp would know that so I could see holding that back.

The entry though I wonder about why he is so firm that that won't be shared. It could be that again only the perp would know how he accessed, and LE. Also they would be the only ones who would know if entry was forced.

However, I wonder if there is more to how the person got in...Key? Code? Forced? Window? Door? Which one? Followed her into garage (doubtful to me but possible)... I have more trouble with this one and understanding why such a big secret... Unless entry was unusual or the manner would tend to indicate a certain type of person. Like if she opened the door, probably someone she trusted or faked they were a cop or some such... Or if no forced entry, would indicate someone she knew that had access code or key...

I mean feds are known to release little and that explains some of it but still I just wonder...

There are other things that one could look at what is not being said but those two come to mind for me.

I don't have anyone or anything in mind, just wondering the reason that is so avoided...
I thought i read that he went in the back door. Not sure where that would be.

Oh I 've heard that but I wouldn't necessarily consider it fact. BUT I do think it possible. This 41 minutes almost all are taking as fact I don't. I think he very well could have disabled the camera, then done a few things outside and went around to the back or even back to the front... I think he was only in there 16 minutes top.

Someone could have also entered through the garage though.

Entry is a big secret. It has been said back door was open. Others said both back and front were. It's impossible to believe any one story as it's like the one glove versus a pair of gloves.

I don't see it, or at least am not sure of it, just another wrinkle, etc. or something in the glove.

I actually haven't looked for much on this today as it could have broke but just felt it's the same old/same old/most of what I saw the few times I looked.

Of course that doesn't mean it might not break at any moment at any time of day but neither I nor any of us or anyone not family need to be right on top of that news if it does.

Today it just made me think, as I think most of us likely do, of my mom and even what my own kids would do or feel like in such a situation. I wonder what my mom would do if she was in this situation. I can tell you a few things she'd do...

She is of similar age and lives alone... And trusts her area and neighborhood.

Not going to go into it other than saying what my real point is, that at it's core, I think everyone can identify with how they'd feel with this with their mother whether they still have mom or not.

It's downright terrifying.

Key PointsOver 40,000 tips received in ongoing Nancy Guthrie disappearance investigation.$200,000 total reward offered for information; anonymity emphasized by Crime Stoppers.

Authorities have cleared the Guthrie family as suspects and urge respectful media coverage.

The search for Nancy Guthrie continues, with the latest reports indicating that law enforcement has received between 40 and 50,000 tips related to the 84-year-old’s disappearance.

On Monday night, a Milwaukee-based lawyer announced he was offering a $100,000 reward on top of the $100,000 already being offered by the FBI for information leading to Guthrie’s location or the arrest of her kidnappers.

New reward now on the table

Milwaukee attorney Michael Hupy said in a Facebook post that “having seen no progress” in the Guthrie case, he was now offering a $100,000 reward through Crime Stoppers for the “arrest of the perpetrator.”

Hupy, the president of Milwaukee Crime Stoppers, is running the reward through Crime Stoppers Tucson.

“She’s an 84-year-old woman and I don’t like the way the investigation and reward is being handled,” Hupy explained to FOX6 Now. “I think it could have been done much better. I think if the $100,000 was put up through crime stoppers – we could be further along.”

Hupy added that he believes the FBI’s requirement for personal information could deter people from coming forward. Crime Stoppers allows tipsters to remain anonymous, using reference numbers to categorize tips that come in.

FBI reward remains in place

The FBI offered its $100,000 sum last Thursday. In the same message, the bureau published information about the subject seen in the surveillance camera footage outside Nancy Guthrie’s home.

The possible suspect is described as a man approximately “5’9” – 5’10” tall, with an average build.” He is seen wearing a black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack available at Walmart.

Authorities clear Guthrie family

Despite some early reports throwing suspicion on the Guthrie family, they have all been cleared as suspects, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a statement on Monday.

“To be clear … the Guthrie family — to include all siblings and spouses — has been cleared as possible suspects in this case,” the statement reads. “The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case.

“To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple… Please, I’m begging you (in the) media to honor your profession and report with sense of compassion and professionalism.”

Nancy Guthrie has three children: daughters Savannah, the co-host of Today, and Annie, and a son Camron.

The woman on the left was saying "was" when talking about her, even then.
I never even noticed that but you're right. She struck me a bit odd too, no idea at all who she is, and more emotional imo than the rest of them. Also she just doesn't "fit" with the rest of them. She isn't one of the regulars to my knowledge and she kind of butts in too. I don't mean anything by it, just was what I noticed on my first watch.

That goes into examining different theories. More closely.

I recommend it.

I gave it a listen, I had things to do at home so listened while I did them and not much else on about it that isn't also old news basically. Nothing too earth shattering but all the guests were good. Mike and the lady at the end both think he did not enter through the front but came out through the front. That's where I've been leaning. And I don't think he was in there the 41 minutes most out there, even news, are saying.

I don't know if it's fact but she says if you zoom in you can see the blood on the flowers... That he used to cover the camera... This would mean the video of him is when they were leaving and where is Nancy? Likely already in a car...

I've never thought about that video what a lot do, again even news, because there is no time stamp...

That part was very interesting. He either entered through the garage or the back which seems to be favored by them...

Gigi is one of my faves. She was doing some lives when this started and things were breaking but since then mostly does prerecorded short vids or shorts. She didn't fall for that last day that most did about the glove, it being a botched robbery and all that bs coming out and never jumped on.

Anyway, this is good,, just 14 minutes, and what I really like about it is the ending few moments are about Nancy herself.

I guess after her husband died, she moved her own mom and her brother into her guest house and her brother had Down's Syndrome and he became a very important person to her, the kids, the family. She was always active, hiking, tennis, etc., but as she got health challenges, she stayed home more but still was involved, went to her monthly book club, etc. We know she drove supposedly. She used a cane this said and had very high powered hearing aids. And more.

I'm mostly only linking what I feel worth it. Most out there is just a lot of repeat stuff.
