‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I don't believe he welcomed the FBI as he says he did.

It comes across as trying to excuse his incompetence, and it isn't working.

Right now it seems this will become a cold case.
I don't know. I don't buy much in this case that isn't verified. That supposedly came from FBI but guess what so did the remarks like about them thinking this was a botched robbery which was quickly shot down as not being their opinion.

And in a city too, there are always supporters of the one who lost the election.

He was voted in, it must mean something.

But your opinion is shared by many.

I'm just not decided.

I wonder when they first asked Walmart to do that. My guess is a few days after they identified it.
I think it might depend on if they wanted all records, certain istore's records, the date range, etc. as to how long such takes. Keep in mind its Wmart lol, I'm generally not overly impressed with them and their mgmnt decisions.

Well, that guy who had worked with him said he didn't like calling in the FBI.

I tend to believe that guy. From the outside looking in, he is right.

He was believable but if it is the guy I was thinking of, he said he had ha problem with them in one instance back when he worked there with him. He also said understandably so in that case. I noted that part, most people ignore it.

We don't have to agree of course, like I said your opinion is a popular one and you are not alone in it.

I don't always go the popular route though lol lol.

I wonder if they checked to see all of the stores that sell that in the area. Also, Amazon. Were any of those shipped to near, or in the city?

Yeah, I'd suggest Amazon and Ebay because even though it is exclusive to Wmart, many resell on those sites, buying things new and marking them up.

Also, I hope they check everyone in the Tucson area that bought one even if it is a female, a wife could have purchased it or it could belong to a teenage son, etc.

First though I suppose they'd look for a good match and if it matches up with someone they've had their eye on... Something like that...

I wonder how long footage exists/if Wmart saves all footage... There are cases I believe where footage has been some time back when they find they need such so I'm hopeful about that. So if a purchaser resembled the video of the perp...

At least we are not around the start of school time. As to the backpack.

I heard the jacket is trickier as it is sold at other places besides Wmart but still I hope they are checking that too at Wmart as there is a chance he bought everything except the gun there. Tarps also...

Has everyone heard that Savanna had vocal surgery just a couple of weeks before this happened? And seen the Today show video about it?

Just watched it myself, I had heard about it recently.

No, I had not heard that.
I can link it if anyone wants but would like to know so I don't forget and move off that video.

I heard a theory bandied about today that I think unlikely but it wasn't bad. Along the lines of Savanna had surgery and maybe her mom was listed as her contact/next of kin and that someone saw the name and address that way.

Then I ran into the video and watched it and her surgeon of course was one of the top ones ever and also did surgery on Chanel I think it was. That made me feel it is very unlikely as anyone in that office/practice/hospital probably makes pretty good bucks. However, 6 million is a lot more than what a nurse probably makes, etc. Seems unlikely but then who ever thought the perp in Tepe would be a surgeon either? And it was recent. I don't favor the theory though.

Anyhow, it's a short video and it was very recent, January 13th or something like that when she had it. Thereabouts.

Let me know. Anyone who wants to see it.

I think what struck me is how much she's been through now knowing that too on top of it. She was barely back to work after being out 3 weeks...

I still wonder about the work angle sometimes... I mean her job had to be coveted I'd think...

Looks like Savannah is blaming herself for having her mum and her home on TV.

Sources told NewsNation that Savannah Guthrie was considering leaving the Today show as the traumatizing search for her mom continues.

The outlet reported that Savannah was concerned her fame motivated Nancy's alleged captors to target her.

Sources cited a segment on NBC where Savannah took viewers inside her mother's Tucson home.

NewsNation's Paula Froelich speculated that the segment could have potentially inspired those with 'bad characters.'

What to know about the suspect

A massive break in the case came earlier this week when FBI Director Kash Patel announced that his team uncovered previously lost surveillance camera footage of a masked individual approaching Nancy Guthrie's home the night she disappeared.

The footage revealed a suspect seemingly disabling the doorbell footage. They were wearing long pants and a long shirt and were carrying a backpack.

The FBI announced on Thursday that the suspect is described as male, approximately 5’9”-5’10” tall, and of average build.

In the video footage, the suspect was carrying a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack.

The bureau has doubled the reward for information leading to Nancy's location or the arrest of her alleged captor to $100,000.

Former FBI agent calls temporary detainments 'routine'

False hope of an arrest came on Friday night when authorities detained multiple individuals at two separate locations in Tucson.

SWAT teams raided a home near Nancy Guthrie's property, and a driver of a Range Rover was detained nearby; however, authorities later said the operation didn't lead to any arrests.

Former FBI special agent Richard Kolko told CNN on Saturday that temporary detainments were 'fairly routine.'

However, Kolko added that every new lead can help direct investigators to several clues.

Exhaustive search enters second week

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 after a dinner with her daughter, Annie.

Law enforcement believes she was kidnapped sometime around 2am on February 1. The search has now entered its 14th day.

Since Nancy vanished, several ransom notes have been sent to news outlets, blood was found on her front door, DNA evidence was uncovered, SWAT teams descended on a nearby home, and multiple individuals have been detained and released.

The Daily Mail has compiled an extensive timeline of key events in the investigation below.

Sheriff Nanos assures that his team 'won't quit'

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in an interview with the New York Times on Friday that no matter how long it takes, his team will find Nancy Guthrie's alleged captor.

'Maybe it’s an hour from now. Maybe it’s weeks or months or years from now. But we won’t quit. We’re going to find Nancy. We’re going to find this guy,' he said.

Nanos reflected on the Friday night operation that included a traffic stop and subsequent detainment of a Range Rover driver and a massive SWAT raid on a Tucson home.

He said his team thought 'this has to be it,' but added: 'Then you talk to people, you learn, you do your search, and you think, "Maybe not."'

Nanos called the 'ups and downs' of the investigation 'exhausting,' but assured that his team would keep moving forward in the search.

Task force staged in Tucson, Arizona

An FBI task force is reportedly staged in Tucson, Arizona as they await forensic results from Friday's raid, according to Fox News.

Authorities have come under fire for sending forensic results to a private lab in Florida rather than to the FBI's lab in Quantico, Virginia.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously defended the position and dispelled rumors of tension between his department and FBI agents.

However, Jason Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent, cast doubt on the decision to Fox News Digital.

'Here’s the question. Do they wait until Monday to commercially ship it to a private lab? In past high-profile cases, I’ve seen FBI aircraft used to immediately shuttle evidence to the FBI Laboratory at Quantico,' he said.

'That eliminates days of waiting. In a case involving a vulnerable 84-year-old woman who is without her heart medication, where every hour matters, you don’t wait for FedEx on Monday morning.'

Authorities haven't yet confirmed which lab is testing the newly obtained evidence.
