‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

In a case like this, cops can't even remember it's illegal to litter.

The poor Guthries.

I'd be willing to bet that when it's solved, the clinching clue could have been found on day one.
They'd better hope if so that she wasn't alive then but wasn't later if it could have been solved much quicker. I am not buying into whether there are issues or not right now as there's too much contradictory info but yes, they'd better hope they did as well as they could at the time with the resources they had.

Yes, Savanna looks absolutely wrecked, devastated. I get upset at people out there who just won't let go of the SIL and Annie as who they think did it, all because of Banfield! Imagine what that adds to the family and to Savanna, that's her family who she needs for support but I'm sure they feel as if they need to stay silent because so many think they are involved.

I haven't ruled anyone out but it seems pretty clear they likely were not involved. So far anyhow. Some out there though have just latched onto that like a dog with a bone. And they NAME him on top of it. And her. And his bandmate.

Gigi was saying (I think it was her) when the Carlos guy was detained too, people immediately found like 20 Carlos by that name and it was up all over the internet with info on each, 19 for sure of which were not even the right guys (I don't recall the exact number she threw out there but something like that).

I'm guilty in some cases of saying who I suspect big time but one can always say father, son, at least and there is always good reason for it but this is next level and beyond out there. We all mostly have I think but this is also a smaller place, it isn't like getting out on the news sites and blasting it in their chats and comments and such. And Ashleigh is a reporter so people believed her and that was way out of line on her part re the SIL.

That's a rather flip comeback.
It is, but Maureen was also saying they dispose of theirs (feds) in bags but it's not unheard of that the bag might be blown by wind, etc. It was a good show, very good I thought. Those two guests were awesome. So it kind of fit the talk. I wonder with him though, I feel Maureen brings him down from his avarice for news and not always making the best choices lol.

Okay... Supposedly per TMZ the glove DNA is complete and to enter into CODIS the rule is if I have it right, the glove has to be back to the state it was found in and done from there, meaning AZ. And that it should be back today...

I don't have high hopes for the glove, or didn't, think it is a lot of hype over nothing.

HOWEVER, ol' sleazy Harvey says supposedly the glove they were testing is NOT the one everyone thought per his "sources" who know which is interesting if true. Remember a few days ago it was said they found one in the house and then that was put to rest as untrue...?

So who knows... If in the house, that's a different story. If not the glove everyone thought, where is it from and who found it...?

I tend to think a glove found outside away from her property is likely to be meaningless.

I refuse to find and link him so I'm sure if anyone wants confirmation by watching the creep they can go find it.

He does seem to have sources though. I think they pay for info which would explain that...

None of them clean up after themselves.
There is a place where there are accidents very often. What's mostly left behind are items ems threw down and left.

More confirmation and info.

Sheriff did say next step is genetic genealogy.

Also more info on the sheriff's statement in this one. Also short, 2 minutes 21 seconds. Gigi.

Shouldn't using genetic DNA be kept to themselves?
I don't know, everyone was already talking prior about that would be the next step, all the talking heads, etc.

Let the perp worry I guess? He was probably laughing at the glove testing imo and no results on anything today...

Sadly, I'm not convinced they have DNA that even comes from a likely thing or place in the home... I mean they could do the genetic thing and it could come back to someone who had a reason to be in her home that the family didn't think of or know about. Possibly. I'm hoping it's more than that though...

I bet it comes back as the Sheriff's. He probably left it behind after clearing a crime scene.

Hardly big news but you know how they report everything in this one. Entin says two men showed up and entered into the back of Nancy's home. Officers let them through and apparently expected them. One carrying a briefcase, unmarked car, dressed like civilians.

I'd guess it was someone the family sent over either to do something or to get something for them. If it was LE not in uniform or something, I wouldn't take that as really big news either.

I'm not linking it as I don't consider it that newsworthy.

Someone else is reporting two officers entered a neighbor's home but based on the channel it is, I'm not taking that as fact unless I see it elsewhere and I haven't.

Why do you think that?

Why don't they do CODIS and Genetic simultaneously? Especially when time sensitive like a kidnapping.

Sending DNA off to one then waiting for result, then again to the other, especially in a suspected kidnapping where a life is on the line. How much is the cost? Seriously.

Ok so now we know what the two guys were let in for. LOL.
Well there were two at Nancy's and two at the neighbors. The two at the neighbors were said to be clearly LE but the two at Nancy's looked like civilians as did their vehicles. So I think we are talking about two different sets of guys.

CODIS is quick though, I wouldn't say they lose much time and if they got a hit, there would be no need for the genetic genealogy.

Listening to a discussion on Megyn Kelly. Only heard one thing new so far, at least new to me. Supposedly Wmart has now provided its sales record for that particular backpack to LE.
