‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office want to question a man seen carrying a backpack in surveillance video recorded just miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home around the same time she disappeared that night, a source familiar with the investigation confirmed to Fox News Digital.

TMZ obtained Ring camera video of a man with a backpack approximately five miles from Guthrie’s house.

Fox News Digital is told the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are reviewing the video because the man seen in the video appears to be dressed similarly to an individual captured in a separate doorbell video at Guthrie’s home, including wearing a backpack.

Authorities have not yet determined if the man is in any way related to the Guthrie case. However, the source said investigators would like to speak with the man as they continue looking into the matter.

Is anyone else having dreams about this case? I am not psychic, but I have had two where some really strange things were being shown to me in the dream, including landscaping with a specific flower, a piece of jewelry with a specific design, and a cream color bathrobe/nightgown.

I am sure LE has thought of this already, but maybe they are going through lists of recent paroles from AZ, NM, and NV state/local prisons where the parolee had a record of burglary/robbery/attacking the elderly?

The FBI's Operational Technology Division has confirmed new identifying details of the suspect, described as a male, around 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with an average build, and was seen wearing a black 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack in doorbell camera footage.

I know Walmart probably sells a bazillion of those Ozark Trail backpacks nationwide, but I wonder if their inventory management system could narrow down OT backpack purchases with a debit/credit card or cash that were made in AZ, NM, NV, CO between say, October and January 29th. Or if certain styles of OT backpacks were only shipped to certain states and not others.

I'm sure they can but only if it was bought at those stores and recently. That would be a major task all by itself BUT if they found where somebody bought one of those and that type of flashlight and a mask ask at the same time!!! Wouldn't that be something!

I think they were measuring the bricks at the front entrance in order to get an estimated height of the masked person in the video. Recreating darkness by using a tent, plus blocking the view of any reporters as to what they were doing.
They can't create darkness with a white canopy tent with sidewalls unless it's pitch black outside, though. I wonder what kind of light they were using?

Oh. Silly me. Unless they put black out sidewalls inside. Oopsie!

I think I worked his height out as 5' 9" too LOL.

Scandalous. Can anyone pull rank on that sheriff? Can the State Police intervene? He needs to be arrested for obstruction.

Maybe they sent that off before the FBI came on board. I'm taking a lot of news with a grain of salt ATM. And I think that was probably one of the things he was keeping back from the media.

What we covered here

• Family’s plea: “Today” host Savannah Guthrie posted a video Monday, saying the family believes 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie is “still out there.” “We are at an hour of desperation,” she continued, “and we need your help.”

• Continuing investigation: The FBI says it has not identified a suspect or person of interest in the case, which is now in its second week. Additional FBI personnel from across the nation are deploying to Tucson, it said.

• Purported deadline: Guthrie’s possible abductors demanded $6 million by 5 p.m. today, CNN affiliate KGUN previously reported, citing a purported ransom note sent to the station. The note included a threat to Guthrie’s life if the deadline wasn’t met, according to KGUN.

The crime scene at Nancy Guthrie’s house is “contaminated,” because of how many people have visited the site, former New York police detective Michael Alcazar said Monday.

“News outlets have been at the crime scene, which has now contaminated the crime scene, which just makes it a little bit harder to process, because now you have more DNA and more fingerprints, more footprints in the crime scene,” Alcazar told CNN’s Erin Burnett.

FBI didnt take over the crime scene till recently (after the 9th) so that's why the glove from inside the house was sent off by the Sheriff department.

The white tent was a blackout tent to create night time simulation in order to help calculate height of the subject and details of the backpack.

Where things stand

• Some progress: Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators have “good leads” in the Nancy Guthrie investigation, though there’s still no indication of where she may be, CNN affiliate KOLD reported.

• Hunt for evidence: People living within a 2-mile radius of Guthrie’s home have been asked to submit any surveillance footage that includes cars and people from about a month before she went missing. The FBI has also doubled its reward from $50,000 to $100,000 for any information leading to Guthrie’s location or an arrest.

• Details on suspect emerge: The FBI described the suspect seen in doorbell footage as a 5’9”-5’10” tall male with an average build and wearing an Ozark Trail Hiker backpack. Investigators have also recovered gloves, which are being analyzed. It’s unclear whether authorities believe they were worn by the suspect.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Thursday investigators have “good leads” in the Nancy Guthrie investigation, though there’s still no indication of where she may be, CNN affiliate KOLD reported.

He made the comment the same day the FBI released more information about the masked individual seen in surveillance footage obtained from a camera at Guthrie’s home and increased the reward to $100,000.

The FBI described the suspect as a 5’9” to 5’10” man with an average build who, in the security video, was wearing a black 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” backpack.

1 hr 26 min agoEx-FBI assistant director explains why backpack seen in doorbell footage is a good clueFrom CNN's Cindy Von Quednow

The technology used to determine the height of the suspect in the Nancy Guthrie disappearance is “extremely accurate,” said Joshua Skule, former FBI executive assistant director for intelligence.

“The height and the backpack are very good clues,” Skule said of the FBI being able to determine what brand backpack the suspect was wearing in doorbell video released earlier this week.

The FBI said Thursday the backpack is a black, 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack.

Next, the FBI will investigate how many of these backpacks were sold and when, Skule said.

“They’ll look at that volume and they’ll start to work backwards and narrowing it down to include the sales in the immediate area of Tucson and then broadening it,” Skule told CNN’s Jake Tapper last night.

Investigators will also see what other brand names they can determine that could generate more leads.

“Whether it’s the jacket, we already have the backpack, we might have the gloves, certainly the lab is working hard on that,” Skule said. “And my guess is, as … they’re able to identify other pieces of clothing that have a brand name, they will publish that out to the public just for more clues and more leads for investigators to follow.”

The FBI has released more information about the person they’re now officially calling a suspect in the search for Nancy Guthrie. It’s the same masked man seen in doorbell camera footage outside her front door 12 nights ago, and the reward for information leading to his arrest — or finding Guthrie — has just doubled.

Here’s what we have learned about the suspect:

Here’s the latest on the case:

A profile emerges: The FBI says the suspect is a man between 5’9” and 5’10” with an average build, who was wearing a black 25‑liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack. Their reward has risen from $50,000 to $100,000 as investigators field a flood of tips: more than 13,000 were submitted to the FBI alone since February 1.

White tent: To refine their profile, agents used a white blackout tent at Guthrie’s home yesterday to recreate nighttime conditions similar to those when she went missing, a law enforcement source told CNN. Agents compared replica clothing and a matching backpack on camera, studied light reflections to confirm brand details, and used equipment to estimate the suspect’s height.Gloves recovered: Investigators said they collected “several items of evidence, including gloves,” which are being analyzed. It’s unclear whether authorities believe they were worn by the suspect.White van: Investigators have gotten a number of leads in the Guthrie case since she went missing, at least one of which involves a white van, law enforcement officials with knowledge of the case told CNN.Radius increased: Authorities are urging anyone living within a two‑mile radius of Guthrie’s home to submit surveillance footage of people or cars in the four weeks before she went missing. This gives us a hint about how authorities are narrowing their search for potential suspects.Still no sign of Nancy: A law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told CNN authorities have still not identified the whereabouts of Guthrie.Weather may hinder search: Rain showers are expected in Tucson and southwest Arizona today, potentially complicating efforts to find evidence connected to Guthrie’s disappearance. The FBI said it would continue the search regardless.

A winter weather system is expected to bring showers to Tucson and southwest Arizona today, according to the National Weather Service’s Tucson office, which could raise issues for law enforcement in their search for evidence related to the dissapearance of Nancy Guthrie.

About a quarter- to a half-inch of rain is predicted in Tucson, with the potential for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said.

Outdoor crime scenes are already at risk for “loss, contamination, and deleterious change of physical evidence in a relatively short period of time,” and environmental conditions like rain, snow or wind can exacerbate the issue, according to the National Institute of Justice.

“The FBI will continue our investigation regardless of weather conditions,” said FBI Phoenix Public Affairs Officer Connor Hagan, adding “Bringing Nancy home is our priority.”

I am remembering they caught LISK by tracing one of the phones he purchased on a credit card. Let's hope this could be similar.

And he was also dumb enough to carry his burner and regular phone together on his person.
